Where to begin...? Fortunately, two of us arrived at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday. It was the first day of daylight savings time and therefore was probably the reason that at that hour, the wait wasn't unreasonable--about 15 mins. However, within a few mins of having been seated, the queue had grown to about 20 people outside the front door and we had to wait for about 30 mins for our food to be served, despite it not being terribly crowded inside.
I'd read good reviews about this place so we were hoping for an exceptional experience. It fell very short of our expectations and we won't be returning. I have to give them credit for their creative writing capabilities because reading the menu was much more enjoyable than was actually eating the food. I'm guessing they'd hired a ghost writer to describe the menu without actually having tasted the cuisine (and I'm using the word 'cuisine' very loosely).
We ordered two brunch dishes to share--the avocado toast and the pork burger special with a side of spicy slaw.
The avocado toast consisted of approximately two tablespoons of what appeared to be pre-packaged guacamole (the kind you find in the refrigerated case at the supermarket) on supermarket-grade wheat toast. It was topped with two fried eggs. It really should have been called, "eggs on toast with a dollop of guacamole." The 'avocado' wasn't the least bit fresh, was slimy and could barely be spotted under the eggs. I've had amazing avocado toast at many restaurants before and it always consisted of nicely seasoned, fresh avocado spread very thickly on fresh, bakery-made wheat toast. This was nothing like that. The potatoes that garnished the dish were barely browned and had no seasoning at all.
The description of the pork burger on the specials board was very elaborate and sounded absolutely delectable. In reality, it was a bland pork patty on a white, kaiser roll with mayonnaise and cheese. The patty wasn't the least bit browned, as if it had been microwaved instead of grilled. We even questioned if it had been cooked enough because it was very pink. A small child next to us vomited on his table and we assumed it was from the undercooked pork! "Spicy slaw" was a misnomer. It was absolutely tasteless. There were pickle slices as a garnish and we had to stop the server, who grabbed the plate before we'd finished, in order to scoop them off. It was a good move because they were the tastiest part of that dish. The staff was obviously in a hurry for us to leave so they could have our table.
We requested hot sauce and 4 bottles of different types of sauce were delivered to us. We were using copious amounts on each item to give them some flavor. However, halfway through the meal, the server came to take the sauces away from us to give them to other customers, stating, "We're running out of our hot sauces." That wasn't a surprise but a better solution would be to flavor the food rather than depend on the sauces for flavor.
The coffee is described as 'bottomless.' I'd finished my coffee and the bit in the bottom of the cup had evaporated before we were able to get the server to bring more.
Overall, the experience was lackluster and generally disappointing. I do however highly recommend the...
Read moreAlthough I had given this place a 5 star review in the past (posted below), I am updating my review after two more encounters. My coworker and I decided to order takeout the other day. I ordered the Vietnamese banh mi sandwich and she ordered the fish tacos. Having grown up around many Vietnamese people, I know what authentic Vietnamese food tastes like. What I had here should not even be called a banh mi, but rather, a pulled pork sub. Traditional Vietnamese banh mi use sliced meat, whether it’s beef, pork, or chicken. The pork on this sandwich was shredded and pulled and had absolutely no Asian flavors. Additionally, an important component of a traditional banh mi is a pate paste, which this sandwich did not have. It was also drenched in a sickly sweet honey based sauce, which is never in a traditional banh mi.
My coworker was just as disappointed in her fish tacos. The fish tased just like reheated frozen fish sticks and lacked flavor. The garlic Parmesan fries were also soggy and tasteless.
I decided to give them another try before submitting this review. I ordered their Asian noodle bowl in a soy ginger broth. It was terrible. Noodles tasted buttery which did not pair well with the extremely salty broth. There wasn’t a trace of ginger in the broth- it was all soy. This place seems to give Asian cuisine a negative reputation. If I come here again, it would only be for brunch.
Previous review: Great place to come for brunch on Sunday. There was hardly a wait, the food was delicious, and the waitress was attentive. I had the bananas foster French toast- if you have a sweet tooth like me, you'll love this dish! My boyfriend had the short ribs benedict- the short rib was a little dry and needed a pinch more salt, but the other...
