Nestled in the heart of our little neighborhood, Fish and Whistle is a delightful eatery that perfectly captures the essence of traditional fish and chips. My girlfriend and I decided to give it a try, and we were left thoroughly impressed with the quality of the food and the relaxed atmosphere.
Upon entering the restaurant, we were immediately greeted with a warm and inviting ambiance. The staff was friendly and accommodating, adding to the overall positive experience.
For our orders, I opted for the classic Fish and Chips (half order), and my girlfriend chose the intriguingly named "Squidwich." As we waited, we noticed the pleasant aroma of fried goodness wafting from the kitchen, building our anticipation.
When our dishes arrived, we were impressed by the generous portions. My Fish and Chips platter was a sight to behold – perfectly battered, golden-brown fish fillets accompanied by a hearty serving of delicious fries. The first bite was a revelation; the fish was tender and flaky on the inside, with a crispy exterior that was just the right amount of crunchy. The fries were perfectly cooked as well, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside – the epitome of what good "fish & chips" should be.
My girlfriend's Squidwich was a delightful surprise. Tender squid encased in a soft bun and a tasty sauce that elevated the entire experience. It was a unique and flavorful take on the typical seafood sandwich.
Despite the generous portions, the food was so delicious that we found ourselves finishing everything on our plates. I even contemplated ordering seconds, but alas, my stomach had met its limit. The taste was truly unforgettable, and it's safe to say Fish and Whistle nailed the traditional fish and chips experience with flying colors.
Another commendable aspect of this little gem was the relaxed atmosphere it offered. It was a perfect spot for a laid-back afternoon with good food, good company, and no rush to leave. The absence of loud music or overcrowding made our dining experience all the more enjoyable.
In conclusion, if you're craving the epitome of what fish and chips should be, Fish and Whistle is the place to go. With its scrumptious offerings, cozy atmosphere, and friendly staff, this little neighborhood restaurant is a hidden gem that deserves to be discovered by seafood lovers everywhere. I can't wait to return for another satisfying feast! Definitely going to try and save some room for the delicious looking...
Read moreI was looking for a place to get some highly rated seafood, and came across Fish & Whistle. This is a bustling, husband and wife owned place.
Jason is very invested in his baby, as you can tell by how he interacts with his customers, and makes sure everything in the kitchen is up to his standards. His wife, Kate was not in when we visited, but we were told she makes all the soft serve ice cream, the champagne parfait, and any of the sweets they might have at the time.
The buns for sandwiches are all homemade as well.
I went with two other people, and we all decided to go with the most popular menu item, the fish and chips. They have three sizes, petite, half, and full. The half was perfect for me and the full was big enough to split between two people. The malt vinegar fries are delicious, and the batter on the fish is so perfectly done and crispy. Oh my goodness...
They also serve a vinegar based cole slaw you can get on the side. This was such the perfect complement to the fish. The flavor is fantastic, and you can tell a lot of love is put into it, as well. So light and delicious.
I'm not a huge tartar sauce fan, in general, but I wanted to just keep eating theirs. I didn't ask but I'm pretty sure it's all made from scratch, as well.
Please do yourself a favor and support a fantastic place. They have also been nominated for a James Beard award. Delicious food and the price...
Read moreWe were in Maine for the day and made a couple of stops in Saco and Biddeford, then decided to have lunch. When I saw Fish & Whistle I had to go, having been a John Prine fan for over 45 years.
The restaurant is fairly small but has plenty of seats. The menu isn't huge but there's a good selection for anyone no matter what they like.
We split the full order of fish and chips. It was cooked to perfection - moist and tender inside with a great crunchy batter on the outside; not greasy in the slightest. The fries were homemade and had the right mix of crispy and soft.
We didn't have room for dessert, although I sincerely wish we did - I believe it was a rhubarb cream puff and it looked delicious.
I asked the young woman at the register how the restaurant name came about. She said that the owner, Jason (?) who was also cooking, is a musician. Obviously one of us Priners!
So glad we found Fish & Whistle and we intend to go back for sure. I also posted about it (specifically the awesome t-shirt) on the John Prine page and the Priners are...
