4/6/2021 It's been four years since I first wrote this review and the service hasn't improved. I came in with a friend on a Monday evening. Upon arriving to Sushi Cafe, my friend realized he forgot his mask at the house and I didn't have an extra one. We thought it would be okay because we take off our mask as soon as we get to a table anyways to eat and have our orders taken, so as long as it isn't busy we shouldn't encounter much issues. We came inside and said we had a reservation, and a waitress said "you can't be in here without a mask". My friend responded with, "Yes I'm sorry I forgot mine". The waitress responded with, "it's a year into the pandemic you know you have to carry a mask", which my friend responded once again with "I forgot mine". Neither of us were arguing like Karen's that we don't want to wear a mask, my friend simply forgot his, not to mention he was doing his best to cover his mouth and nose with his jacket, to be as accommodating as possible. She then proceeded to say that masks were a dollar. I said we were not going to pay a dollar for a mask when she's just going to seat us immediately and we're going to be taking it off when we're ordering. Not to mention, almost every other establishment in Birmingham passes out masks for free, we could have easily knocked next door for a mask and they probably would have given one to us. The only people in the entire establishment were my friend and I, the employees, and one other family of four sitting there in on a Monday night. After a little more back and forth, I believe one of the owners or managers told the waitress to quickly get us to a table. This initial exchange was quite ridiculous, while I understand the importance of wearing a mask, we were further away from the employees standing than when she came over to take our order while we were sitting. The other family sitting in the dining room came up to us and said they were nurses and had an extra mask and gave one to my friend for free so that we could leave with our masks on. Just ridiculous service, we would have eaten elsewhere if the other restaurants nearby weren't already closed. (2017) One star only because the food is good. Customer service is pretty inconsiderate and rude. My friends and I were throwing a surprise birthday party, and after Sy Thai was full we headed over to Sushi Café. After we were settled down, everyone but two people ordered food out of a group of eight. One person was deathly allergic to everything on the menu and the other was leaving in half an hour anyway. Keep in mind that we are here to have a good time and celebrate our dear friend's birthday. After everyone ordered their food, there was no backing out and they told us that either everyone had to order or they kick out the people who did not order. As we had valid excuses why we weren't ordering and we are taking OUR money as a group to give it to this restaurant so we have an easy night celebrating without hardship and annoyance, they were willing to split up our group. As we could have taken our money anywhere else I felt as though this was an act of greed. I understand that this is a small establishment, however there were other seats available and no other people were piling in. You can spare two people. If the service was a ton better I would have given...
Read moreI was visiting back home and was looking for good sushi. I was very disappointed in the food and especially the service. I came in around 7. The restaurant didnât close until 9. soon as I walked in the door, one of the staff member greeted me by saying they âran out of riceââŠNO rice is available, IN A sushi restaurant?! Which was extremely disappointing. After a few minutes. Another staff member came from the back and said they just made some more rice and were back serving sushi, and it was awkward exchange between the employees they seemed annoyed with each other. After that, I was walked to a table by the woman who told me that there was no rice, the table was dirty, splattered sauce and a sticky substance. The woman saw the spots on the tableâŠused her HAND to try to wipe them off. Since They were sticky, they didnât move and then she left. I really expected her to come back and wipe the table especially after she herself noticed but she never returned. I felt insulted. I had to go find her get out my seat and ask her to wipe the table. By this point I was pretty annoyed, but I decided to stay anyway since I made the 10 minute walk from my hotel to get the sushi, I ordered two rolls and both of them were quite lack luster, I ordered the salmon on the beach and it was bland and was falling apart when I barely tapped it with my chop sticks. The other was the YumYum. It was decent but didnât knock my socks off. Also, throughout the whole hour that I was in the restaurant none of the waiters came to check on me, asked me if I needed anything or asked me: How was the food? Although the bus people did keep my glass with water. As I was eating I noticed The staff was working to put different things away in the main dining room (restocking) and one of them handling the silverware kept coughing constantly. It really grossed me out when I saw her coughing and rolling up silverware and napkins, handling pop cans etc. She probably shouldâve stayed home, especially working in the food industry. I would not recommend this and I would not go back save your money and time. What a...
Read moreTo all those who are reading reviews, To regarding the recent review posted by âA.Sâ, I am a waitress that works at Birmingham Sushi and was there that night. To be exact, which multiple customers that can attest to, that night the customer âA.Sâ let us know about the hair. We fully took responsibility and apologized multiple times about the hair and was willing to remove an entire roll off of their bill or have it be remade. They were not happy about that and wanted their entire meal for free. This customer threatened us that he would post a review if we didnât. We told him that if he wanted to, we were in no place to stop him, but to not threaten us. Not only did he threaten us, servers but the owner himself. On top of that, multiple customers told us that they overheard him discussing with his friend that he would leave without paying. After, customer âA.Sâ started to scream at these customers because they were âlookingâ at him. We, as a restaurant, take full responsibility for the mistake and weâre willing to compensate, but because our compensation wasnât good enough for this customer, the aftermath made us fear for the safety of our staff and customers. Threatening and harassing the staff and customers...
