Take your tastebuds on a magical journey that will delight and thrill. This is as authentic as it gets for Greek cuisine in Alabama. There is most definitely truth in advertising as everything was indeed tasty. Since I couldn’t decide on what to order I instinctively went for a whole assortment of different flavor profiles.
The baked chicken is the tell , if you go to a Greek restaurant and they don’t have a good baked chicken… walk out. This should be a staple on every single Greek menu. Seemingly innocuous but it is the cannery in the coal mine so to speak for what you can expect for the rest of the meal. It outperformed even my high expectations. Served with a grilled lemon to squeeze over the top it was perfectly salted and not over or under cooked.
Our sides were the Greek fries (which were crispy in all the right ways, and a punch of saltiness from the cheese) I asked for some taziki sauce for the chicken but dipped my fries on it as well. Honestly I didn’t even dip the chicken in it because it tasted so good on its own I didn’t have to.
I also feasted upon the spinach rice and tabouleh and both were opposites on the flavor spectrum one with warm savory spices that melted with the tomatoes and rice and the other bursting with fresh herbs and spring vegetables with Frekkah which is a roasted green wheat that adds such a wonderful texture and pleasant yet slightly nutty flavor.
The orzo “Mac and cheese” is no ordinary Mac and cheese side, this Greek version of a classic dish had such an amazing mouth feel with some garlic and herb notes that just elevated it to the next level.
And I’m going to end where we started which was with the appetizers. I can never get past the spanakopita (which is heavy on the dill just like I like it) But today I added in the garden humus which had fresh limas and asparagus with an array of herbs with a drizzle of olive oil… and that is just the topping, underneath laid a silky smooth hummus that was not grainy or bitter . The fresh pita sent me over the moon… I was in greek heaven.
The chicken pita was like having all the freshness of the salads and the spot on roasted chicken all in one…. So you really can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. I have yet to try something I absolutely didn’t love .
We were so stuffed that we had to get the desserts to go but my god … if you haven’t been here you are missing out on one of the best restaurants Birmingham has to offer. It’s a hidden gem in...
Read moreThe food seemed fresh and well prepared but overall lacked any specialness or much flavor. I’m a professional food stylist and chef and I could probably have made something more exciting at home.
My zucchini fritter pita sandwich was very dry. It was served with a thick spread that was supposed to be tziki I think but it was very thick, almost like mayonnaise- tasted good, but did not add any moisture to my sandwich. I almost choked lol. The fries were good. Salad was okay, the greens were crisp and fresh but eh it was kinda boring. Side of potatoes was pretty good but, again, boring. Nothing really blew my mind or excited me. Spanakopita was pretty good….I’m not sure. I just thought something should have really stood out as amazing for the price we paid.
It’s not an exorbitantly expensive restaurant overall but I can get a pita sandwich that’s better and half the price elsewhere. My cocktail (white port and tonic) was really good but my boyfriend’s (tasty town gin & tonic) had so much garnish floating in it he could barely drink it.
The atmosphere was trendy and beautiful. I’m pretty sure that’s what you’re paying for. Our party was younger than most people in the dining room and we all ordered “cheaper” dishes simply because we were all vegetarian and there wasn’t much in the name of entrees for us to choose from- anyways, the point is is that our server was kind of rude- not explicitly- but he just seemed disinterested in waiting on us, literally barely making eye contact with us, looking over his shoulder often, eager to turn and run to wait on the other table he had, assuming they were spending more money.
Everyone in our party was vegetarian so maybe their seafood and meat entrees are more special, but my meal was just so-so and for the price I don’t think I will return. Really, my meal just made me wish that we had gone to the much less glamorous but much more delicious Karam’s on 18th instead. Now that’s a good pita sandwich…
If I could give 2.5 stars I would, simply because our server was not very good. I understand that everybody has different tastes in food, so overall the meal gets 3 stars. But service is 2.5 stars- maybe more if you’re showing your American...
Read moreHaving dined in Greek themed restaurants throughout North America, Europe and Greece including the Islands, I set a high bar for the food and overall experience. A much anticipated visit to this upscale Greek in the heart of Birmingham did not disappoint. Tasty Town offers fresh and authentic Greek inspired dishes far above the ‘gyro and a side’ joints you find most everywhere and does so in a consistent manner while giving the customer good value. The menu is thoughtful, the ingredients well prepared with a balance of flavors to appease most any palate. The signature hummus starter is not to be missed. A purée of chick peas seasoned mildly with garlic, lemon an array of spices including cumin and dusted with, possibly, Aleppo pepper (?) and topped with toasted whole chickpeas. The flavors and melding of textures is unique and worthy of the praise noted in reviews. The zucchini fritter is a savory treat with a hint of honey drizzle reminiscent of an eggplant fritter I once had on the Greek island of Skiathos and still remember to this day. The braised lamb shoulder pita in a mild tomato base is not to be missed, the beef tenderloin was grilled to perfection. The Greek fries are innovative, seasoned lightly with dill, parsley and pecorino (could be kefalotyri cheese). The avgolemono soup is authentic yet I would have desired a wedge of fresh lemon to squeeze on for good measure. The menu is varied and versatile and left me wanting to try more items. The dolmades, spanakopita and meatballs as well as the chargrilled eggplant all sound interesting. For lovers of Italian with a twist the pastichio would be worthy. For those with a sweet tooth to pass up the loukoumades would be regrettable. Highly recommend this place. Oh, the wine list is truly impressive in its offerings and wide selection. Try a glass of the Areni and experience the result of 6000 years of vinification experience and...
