Had the chance to dine here Saturday, Feb 15th. This is probably the most perfectly lit restaurant in Birmingham, and this is coming from someone who dines out 3 nights a week. Proper, dim, warm, cozy lighting is paramount to a dining experience and rarely is it executed to this level of perfection.
Pizza dough was truly wonderful. While the combination of ingredients on the pizza's might at first glance have seemed slightly unorthodox (but in a good way), it was very clear that an extraordinary amount of thought and careful intention went into this menu and it's all the better for it. You can get a pizza anywhere. You can't get this pizza anywhere else.
Had the chance to converse with two separate, very charming female hostesses who were both willing and even eager to share extended details about the space beyond just seating us and walking away. Neither ever seemed hurried to escape us and this is probably because the place was properly staffed to allow for these very types of conversations, as opposed to being understaffed for the sake of payroll. The bartender was able to not only recite but describe an extensive Gin list without referring to a menu or looking over their shoulder. Across all personnel, one thing that really sat with me was that of the 4 different staff members that engaged me over the night, all 4 seemed so well informed across all aspects of the restaurant -- from food, ingredients, liquor, and even the backstory of how the building was first acquired and the efforts that went into its transformation -- I swear it left me thinking that anyone I dealt with could very well have been the owner. This is so rare these days among a sea of uninformed, or simply disinterested "I just work here" types. Kudos to the principals of the space for what seems like some very arduous training.
Overall, this was an A+ dining experience, with bonus points. Will return, and in...
Read moreWonderful evening and delicious food! Make your reservations well in advance. They validate parking in the lot directly behind the restaurant. We requested a quiet corner for our table for 2, they delivered. We each started with a cocktail and they were excellent. We also observed that they have a full page of zero proof / non-alcoholic beverages and include some great looking no alcohol mixed type drinks. Sometimes the non alcoholic drinkers get short changed on creativity, or lack of. This restaurant has some great options! The bread and butter focaccia was so light and fluffy delicious with an herb butter spread and chive oil. We shared a winter greens salad and if you like roasted beets and goat cheese you will LOVE this Salad!
We had the seared scallops and they were so sweet and tender, very tasty dish!
We also Chicken Schnitzel and my husband really satisfied his craving for some fried chicken served “German Style”. The portion was large! He brought some home.
We shared a side of the wood fired Brussel Sprouts and they were amazing, if you like Brussel sprouts! It had touches of cranberries, almond slivers and a little goat cheese.
They have 4 locations. It started in Washington State where they have a location in Tacoma and one in Spokane, next was Chattanooga and the Birmingham location opened early 2025, but long enough to be...
Read moreThere were 4 of us who just arrived in town for the Women’s NCAA tournament. We happened upon this gem while googling for a late evening pizza place. Our server, HG, was excellent. She was very friendly, accommodating & informative. She even wrote down some of her favorite places in town for us to check out while we were in town. We ordered drinks, the “bread & butter” focaccia appetizer, a caesar salad, and a mozzarella pizza (very similar to a margarita pizza, with tomato sauce instead of tomato slices). Since it was late (for us), the 4 of us shared all of the food. The focaccia was delicious & big enough for each of us to have a small piece. The dipping oil was very flavorful. We each had a small portion of salad that was sufficient for our appetites. Normally, the 12” wood fire pizza would be cut into 6 slices, but since there were 4 of us, HG said she would have the chef cut it into 8 slices. It would probably usually be portioned for 2 - 3 people, and was very tasty. We definitely were pleased with our experience at Wooden City. If there was any down side to this restaurant, it would be parking & that the area is not...
