2 days ago, after driving 12 hours, I had planned to pull over and eat at the British Open Pub in Bluffton. My wife and I have frequented the British Open Pub in Hilton Head since the late 90s, and since she is from Wales, we really look forward to it. We got to Bluffton at 8:50 pm, a full hour and 10 minutes before their closing time on a Saturday night. So I walk in to an empty restaurant with the staff all gathered behind the bar laughing and telling jokes ( including some NSFW words I heard before I opened the door) and no one offering to seat me. When I asked them for a table for 3, one young lady said they were finished serving. I told them their hours were posted as being open until 10pm, and the same lady said "Technically, that's true, but we're just serving bar drinks now". In all my life, I've never been refused service more than an hour before closing. I got back in my car and drove on to Hilton Head hoping to arrive at the main pub in time for service. My wife called ahead in the car hoping to tell them about the appalling condition of service in Bluffton and to receive some sort of apology, or at least a "come on in to this location, we will serve you here". Instead, we got excuses as to how Bluffton is allowed to send workers home when business slows down, and a response that the Hilton Head location was also slow and may close early if we didn't get there in time! Sizing up our options, we called Guiseppe's Pizza, another favorite HHI tradition with a closing time of 10pm. They were more than happy to take our order over the phone and we had some amazing stuffed pizza, good as usual! I cannot tell you how disappointed I am in the lack of customer service afforded us by British Open Pub. This has always been my favorite establishment in HHI, and I literally drove out of my way from DC to Pensacola to go there and eat. Knowing it was late, we even pulled over at the Bluffton location to be served at 8:50 instead of driving on to Wexford and asking to be served at 9:15. I sincerely hope management sees this, reviews what happened, and makes some changes in their policies. Maybe post a "kitchen closes at" note on their website? Or at least keep the kitchen open later at one location? As a small business owner myself, we stay late every day and see people who sometimes arrive 10 minutes before closing. I can't believe management would willingly tell their staff to refuse business 70 minutes before closing and pay them an hours wages to sit around and tell each...
Read moreWe've always wanted to try this restaurant, even though the location is odd and the outside vibes were not compelling. "Where oh where can we find really good fish and chips", we've asked ourselves since we moved here. We thought a British Pub would do it. Husband ordered Fish and chips and I ordered a salad.. the fish was ok, not remarkable. The fries were very good and the cole slaw was good too. The entree salad was not too my liking. It may have been better with a different dressing. I suppose I was betting on that fact, as I brought most of it home with me. The ham and turkey were in spirals and made up of what I would swear was a packaged meat. Not bad, but, I could have done this at home. It was disappointing. I gave my husband half, and I tried to eat a third? The dressing had a distinct preservative flavor that I found unpleasant. I asked for ranch and blue on the side. They seemed identical. I asked the waitress if there was, in fact, a blue cheese option on my plate. She was sweet and got me another little bit of.. blue? Not one of those little cups tasted different from the other. They all had that tangy after-taste that reminded me of a generic bottled dressing. I asked if I could have a roll or?? She brought out a small loaf of 4 slices - soda bread? and one tiny foil wrapped butter. Not sure what the bread was, but it was the highlight of my lunch. The ambiance was a bit lived in, but it felt cozy. The staff were wonderfully friendly and the presentation of the food superb. While husband "liked" the fish, we are still on the hunt. Me? I haven't found spectacular blue cheese dressing either.. at least not yet, but there are still many a restaurant in...
Read moreI happened to stop by the British Open Pub located in Bluffton today for Brunch. Upon entering the Pub I was greeted by the hostess. Very Warm and Welcoming Experience. The bar was packed with people and the restaurant was packed. At first I thought it would be hard to get a table. The hostess assured me they had a table open. She took me to the table. Upon sitting down I was greeted by my waitress. She immediately got me my drinks and was very fast taking my order. I ordered the Tom Watson Steak and Eggs. Served with potato wedges. It was perfect and really hit the spot. The coffee and mimosa's were totally awesome. It does not end there. They also offer scones that are totally awesome. The British Open Pub in Bluffton has certainly made my top list of places for Sunday Brunch. My Waitress Judy originally from Pittsburgh is a true professional and really added to such an amazing experience. I was not rushed at all and my waitress brought me more coffee before I left. I certainly will give this awesome pub Five Stars and it even rates more. A must visit if you are in the Hilton Head, Bluffton, Beaufort, Savannah and Charleston areas. I certainly will be visiting in the near future. Speaking as some one from Ireland and had traveled all over the World this pub certainly meets my high expectations of...
