Unfortunately, no matter how good their crispy duck is, I cannot recommend this restaurant. Although I have frequented this restaurant in the past, I will not be going back.
During my most recent experience, the young, middle school aged, daughter of the cook processed my purchase. Growing up in a small business family myself, I understand how family businesses work, and that children are usually actively interested in learning how things work and how they can help out.
Unfortunately, the girl was mostly unsupervised at the register and due to this, had apparently made a mistake and gave one takeout person someone else's order. Tofu chow mein instead of chicken chow mein - an honest mistake. The person that came in for the tofu ended up having to wait and seemed fine with it. Nothing too out of the ordinary, you might say.
But that's when things started to get very bizarre in a hurry. The wife of the cook proceeded to come out into the front end of the restaurant and gave the daughter a verbal thrashing in Chinese (maybe Vietnamese?) right in front of us. Being somewhat familiar with Asian culture, I know parents can be hard on their children in the face of failure, but she belittled the little girl and made her cry.
So the guy with the tofu order attempted to come to the little girls defense. He had interpreted it as the mother was yelling at the girl to not talk with customers and told the mother that there was no reason to yell and that we were all having a good conversation before the mother came in (we were - all joking and trying to quickly pass the time as we waited for our orders).
The woman started crying and stood there seething for a few minutes. Then the mother proceeded to shout at the customer for a solid 10 minutes. Unfortunately her English skills were poor and I'm not sure that she was able to get her point across, so she continued to yell at him and repeat herself with different words mixed in. I was not able to understand her, but the point is moot. Eventually the customer got angry enough from being shouted at and called the police.
The cook finally came out and gave us our orders. As I left, I heard him yelling as well.
I've never experienced someone so angrily shouting at a customer, and I'm concerned about what that little girl has to endure. My girlfriend and I left pretty shaken up about the whole experience and it definitely had an impact on the rest of our night.
I'm not sure if there's anything else I could or should do about the situation, but I certainly won't be going back to...

Service. The young man at the desk seemed annoyed that you had customers. He offered no welcome or smile. When another customer asked if he knew how much longer she needed to wait for her order (she said she’d been waiting almost an hour), he didn’t say a word, just walked away and mumbled an update a few minutes later.
Atmosphere. Having a greeter with such a negative attitude really kills the hospitality of your restaurant. Being able to see the cluttered stuff on the table behind the counter feels messy. The menus are old and faded. Nothing feels like you care.
Food. We ordered sesame chicken, sweet and sour chicken, egg rolls, fried rice, and wonton soup. The sesame chicken was the worst. The chicken was absolutely destroyed in the fryer. We had to chisel it apart with our chopsticks. The chicken was so crusty that I didn’t know where the chicken ended and the breading began. It tasted like old oil. No amount of sauce can cover that up. The egg roll was dripping in grease. I’m pretty sure you need your oil to be hotter. I actually liked the roll itself but it was prepared badly. The rice was soggy and gross looking. Add more vegetables for some color and don’t let it cook so long or something. It was bad. The soup was good and the sweet and sour chicken was decent. (Not sure why the chicken in that one was edible but the sesame was not).
In the end, we couldn’t help but laugh when our dinner was finished with a crushed, stale fortune cookie that had no fortune inside of it! How...
