The food was fresh and well-presented and we enjoyed the options, but I was profoundly disappointed with our experience. We drove 3 1/2 hours for a one-day (I had off from work, which I never do on Sundays) mountain excursion. We researched and reviewed and planned to come here before taking our 4 1/2 year old to Apple Hill Farm. Knowing we would only have an hour to sit down and enjoy this beautiful location, we pre-selected our order online and were able to immediately give to waitress. HOWEVER... When our family arrived, my husband and daughter went in to get a table, while I opted to re-park my car...to provide space for others. (The person who's spot I pulled into technically was enough space for two cars, and I could see the car after us had gone beyond and there were no spots.) When I walked in to join my husband, the hostess asked if we were all together, to which we said "no". This hostess had already been told by my husband we were a party of 3, but we understood how one might need clarification, since I had been chatting with this woman...who was in the car I provided space for. The woman behind us, who's group would still be looking for a spot to park had I not been voluntarily accommodating, then interrupted us and insisted, "Yes, and we NEED to sit outside because we have a dog." Well, we had told the hostess we had been hoping to sit outside, as well. But she replied, "We are going to sit you inside because she has a dog." Obviously this group did need to sit outside, but this is a first-come-first-serve establishment and we were had arrived FIRST. Her group should have been told that they needed to wait for a table to clear. I was FLOORED!! I am 18 weeks pregnant and was culturally caught off guard by how pushy this woman behind us, from Charlotte, who shared she had been staying in the mountains...on vacation...was. This was our ONE day trip for the year, I am a part-time working Stay at Home Mom...married to an intensely hard-working Landscaper... who labors 13+ hour days in RDU heat. We are a working-class family. For us to save to spend $50 on lunch and to budget an under $200 day trip is a great cost. My husband wasn't going to take this out on our sweet waitress, so tipped generously...as we always do when eating out. But, again, I simply could not believe we were seated at a table for 2 in the inside corner, with a 4 1/2 year old who had just spent 3 1/2 hours in the car...while these women got to enjoy a seat under the gazebo area outside... Although we had arrived first and had expressed a preference to be outside. By this time, we needed to just be somewhere and eat...so, we were going to take whatever seat we could... But, we were also confused to note how many open tables were in our room alone. We had even been told we might have to wait. The woman behind us was discourteous to not wait her turn, and the hostess should have preferred us on this first-come-first-serve basis. Unfortunately, this experience was not pleasant or restful and when we opt to dine out, that's why we are paying for...a holistic experience. Although I was kind and had no inclination to cause a scene in the restaurant, I actually felt bullied as a young/pregnant mother, by this older/larger/louder/insistent woman...who clearly has enough disposable income to spend her summer in the mountains and enough time to wait or...
Read moreI recently visited Over Yonder Restaurant and was thoroughly impressed! I started with the Jump in the Line cocktail, and it was so delightful that I couldn’t resist having a second one. The tropical flavors were refreshing and paired perfectly with my meal.
The crispy okra is a must try. It is incredible and might even be healthy. They flash fry okra till it's crispy and caramelized and serve it with a remoulade sauce. If you're a veggie lover, you can't go wrong. And it heats up nicely later in an air fryer if you find you've ordered too much food.
For my main course, I opted for the vegan Fungi Bowl, a delicious option that seems to be a recent addition as some online menus may be outdated. The dish was flavorful and versatile, especially when enhanced with the various hot sauces our amazing waitress brought to the table. I particularly loved the Caribbean-inspired hot sauce, which complemented the tropical notes of my drink beautifully. The restaurant offers a range of hot sauces inspired by different cuisines, including Mexican mole, Caribbean, and Asian styles, each adding a unique twist to the meal.
The ambiance at Over Yonder is just as remarkable as the food. I adored the rustic charm of the chipping paint, which gave it a cozy, country feel. With plants on every table, the setting felt warm and welcoming. I chose to sit outside, taking advantage of the beautiful weather, and the view didn’t disappoint—right across the street is the original Mast General Store, a spot rich in history and perfect for some shopping after a meal.
Overall, I highly recommend visiting Over Yonder and pairing it with a trip to the Mast General Store for a truly delightful experience. Both spots offer a unique taste of local charm and history that...
Read moreWhen we come to the area each year there are only 4 places we eat at. As of this year’s visit, that list is now 3. We arrived early at 4:45 pm on 8/5/2020. We first called from the parking lot to place a pick up around 4:55 pm. The girl was very apprehensive to consider taking the order. We asked about an item we saw online on the dinner menu. She argued the item was lunch only and we should check the menu online. We had before calling. We wait for them to open and we walk up. On the menu at the door for dinner was.....that item. There were only 2 other parties there. No one was waiting as we walked in. There were no signs indicating to go order customers were 2nd class citizens and had to order outback in the all but empty dark store. The hostess called my wife around the podium to point out the place through window and noticed her severe limp where she had just hurt her knee. Instead of offering to take our order, we are pointed out there in the rain. Then to top off everything else as they are watching my wife limp out ahead of me, I was verbally attacked by a waitress because heaven forbid my face shield slipped below my nose. Her attitude aligned perfectly with all of the other attitude we had received up to that point. We did head on out to the shack where 2nd class to go order citizens were to go and kept on to the truck. Obviously with only serving 2 other covers at 5pm they didn’t need my money bad enough to treat us decently.
So we headed back to Boone. We placed an order with Bella’s. They were excellent. Awesome customer service. They were happy we were there. The pizza and meatballs were really good. So next time you are in Watauga County .....
Head on over yander to Bella’s in Boone. You will be appreciated...
