I was very disappointed and I don't even usually review places..but i had to with this. I was a frequent Chinatown Express customer..even though after covid, the quality of the food went down. That being said...Dumpling Garden was not good at all. First, one of the great things was the open kitchen concept that Cexpress had. You cold see the kitchen...cleanliness and briefly interact with people cooking. It made it feel more communal and neighborly. Now it is walled off..makes the space look awkward and uninviting. As for my food...the chicken wings were okay..the dumplings were super small..and luckily they pan fried them for me..because that is what gave them some flavor ( some selections are steamed...others offered are pan fried...it really should be a choice for all selections) ..the veggie lo mein tasted like oil/fish..as if they did not clean pan well...plus I asked to replace the mushrooms with broccoli..for $2 extra...which realistically should not be such of an upcharge...(because broccoli is still relatively inexpensive) but there was legit 4 pieces of broccoli..and very little veggies in what was supposed to be veggie lo mein...I got my adult niece crab rangoon..which she loves...she ate one or two pieces..then threw the rest away. I am not sure how they like it it Somerville..but we still like neighborhood food over gentrified foods for bland suburban palettes. There is now officially no "good Chinese food" in Boston....not even in Chinatown. Folks will now have to go to Quincy...or check out the Thai and Vietnamese offerings in Fields Corner. I wanted this restaurant to have great food like CTown express did...and unfortunately, it was not even mediocre at best. It does the community no justice when good businesses are replaced with others that really do not meet the standards of the previous business that was replaced...they should be the same or better. This place is not either... and I most likely will not recommend it to others or eat...
Read moreBeware. Ordered tonight from Doordash. First of all, the ETA was abnormally long - 47-62 minutes. But I did it anyway. The restaurant took so long to prepare the order that the Dasher arrived around 40 min after I placed the order and I noticed they sat there waiting for the restaurant to prepare the order for 15 minutes. I ordered 3 things - beef noodle soup, a small hot and sour soup, and shredded pork in garlic sauce. What could possibly take 55 min to cook and still not be ready? The Dasher got fed up and left, and the ETA jumped to a massive 2 hrs after I placed the order. I ended up calling door dash and cancelling the order about an hour after placing it - when I was originally supposed to receive my food. As of the time of cancellation, Doordash was still trying to assign a new Dasher to the order. And it's not as if I didn't put a tip on the order either. What a waste of an hour, and now I have no food coming. How could it take an hour and they still didn't have 3 simple menu items ready? It wasn't that they somehow didn't receive the order. I know they received my order because they called me to acknowledge it when I placed it and to inform me the shredded pork dish did not come with rice. I understand the restaurant is new and may have some kinks to work out, but this is...
Read moreUPDATE: I have since ordered three more times, and every time the food quality is better than OK, but my order is always wrong- the most common denominator being the fried rice. No big deal for me I guess but a big oversight for anybody who has food allergies.
Ordered for two a combo dinner of house fried rice, chicken wings, chicken fingers, and boneless spareribs. Received what was more like white rice with only shrimp (no beef, chicken, ham or pork), so that was a bit of a bummer. But no big complaints about the chicken, and I will say the spare ribs were really good. I'm about 2 miles away but the food showed up within 20 minutes and was...
