Hanmaru Gamjatang – A Hidden Gem for Korean Comfort Food Lovers
Tucked away like a little secret that locals know to keep, Hanmaru Gamjatang is the ultimate spot if you’re craving authentic Korean flavors that hit you right in the soul. The star of the show? Their gamjatang—this pork bone soup is pure perfection. The broth is rich, deeply flavored, and has this amazing slow-cooked vibe that speaks of hours of dedication. It’s spicy but balanced, with just the right amount of heat that warms you up rather than overpowering the flavors.
The tender, fall-off-the-bone pork is the real treat, and it’s worth every second of the work it takes to savor it off the bones. And let’s talk about the sides! They serve an array of traditional banchan, all fresh and with unique flavors that complement the main dish beautifully. Each bite feels like a complete experience.
But it’s not just about the food—Hanmaru has that cozy, welcoming atmosphere that makes you feel like you’re sitting down to a meal made with love. The staff are attentive and genuinely friendly, eager to make you feel at home. If you’re on the hunt for authentic Korean comfort food that’s generous in both portion and flavor, Hanmaru Gamjatang is a must-visit. This place isn’t just a meal; it’s an experience you’ll keep coming back for.

-0 waiting time -great for lunch -served quick -try Japchae if you are noodle lover
Notably, one can find a seamless dining experience here, exemplified by a zero waiting time, especially commendable during the busy lunch hour.
However, a couple of dishes left room for improvement. The Japchae, a stir-fried noodle dish traditionally seasoned with a sweet and savory sauce, was unfortunately a tad on the soggy side. The texture of the noodles was missing that delectable al dente quality that truly makes this dish shine.
The marinated Kalbi, a quintessential Korean dish, also could have used a minor tweak. A reduction in sweetness and a punchier garlic taste would have greatly enhanced the flavor profile. Incorporation of fruits like pears, customary in authentic Kalbi marinades for natural sweetness and tenderness, could have added a layer of complexity to the taste.
Despite these minor shortcomings, the overall experience was highly satisfactory. The authentic ambience, combined with the heartwarming service and generally good food, makes Korean Home Taste a worthy stop for Korean cuisine in Allston. Rest assured, I'm eagerly looking forward to another visit to this cozy spot, hoping that they consider these suggestions for an even more rewarding...

My friend came from out-of-town for his Ph.D. dissertation defense with his wife, and wanted to eat out the night before; I foolishly chose Hanmaru.
I am very allergic to bell peppers; he is deadly allergic to peanuts. We both stressed these allergies to the man who took our order, and what would happen if we were to eat these ingredients. He paid careful attention, and took notes. We waited for over 45 minutes for two pad thais, two soups, and udon noodles. We went home eagerly at 9:15PM, so that our families could finally eat, to find out that
his food has crushed peanuts all over it
my miso soup is, instead, some spicy pepper soup
the two pad thais --which we paid extra for in order to have extra shrimp and extra veggies-- had normal shrimp and no veggies.
I shall never eat here (again), and...
