I had a rather peculiar experience today! I went in to purchase a lunch (Turkey Club on Rye). When I ordered the old women asked me my name, she askes me 2nd time! I told her a placed the order specifically saying No-Mayo!!! I'm one of those strict Non-Mayonaise consuming HUMANS that won't even date someone who eats the discusting condiment. I've found myself saying the phrase "No Mayo" when ordering pizza! So you understand just how much I despise mayonaise! So while ordering I remember saying this to the woman who seemed hard or hearing! In fact she asked my name twice, and when I told her I had the additional ¢27 (so that I wouldn't break a bill) I had to say it twice! So my order comes up and I leave! Something dawned on me to check the club! Low and behold, was a healthy layer if the artery clogging glue! So of course I went back! When I went back she darted over to me and asked "What's the problem"? So I told her that there was mayo on the club! She then stated that I didn't tell her that! She's older so I just handed the sandwich box! She took into the cooking area (within earshot) and immediately began recanting to the chef's that "He didn't say no mayo"! She said this about 5× before I called over to her to give me my money back! She couldn't hear me then and asked me twice what I was saying! I told her it was unprofessional to let the customer hear her saying that! She said nothing of an apology and said "Don't get mad at me" "Your thw one who forgot to say anything (maybe not her exact words, but nothing of the professional sort)! So a co-worker came over laughing and asked what the problem was! I told her that this was unprofessional! All the while, this women who is an older white women continues to say that I didn't say no mayo!!! Now, this seems really small! Thats because it was! However, the overall attitude was trash! The customer is not always right! We went on for about a minute! With mw getting more upset ultimately calling the place Townie-Trash! I'm an African American, and this is not the first time I've heard of this behavior in the McKennas establishment! Its literally TAVERN FAIR! A friend of mine who bought breakfast a few years back got the wrong order handed to him and when he had gone back, his food had been given away! The lines get long on the weekends (when their actually busy) so he didn't want to wait! He asked for his money back and the women then asked him why he couldnt just wait the additional ten minutes! The behavior was sketchy both times! You get the sense that therw is a bit of prejudice! For me that is provocative! After hearing the laughter and the lack of an apology! I left! I'm also no victim as I had some words of my own! I guy came to ask if the laughing women were okay! Although they all heard her lack of respect! It just reassures that some things never change! Though BOSTON is being gentrified and change is inevitable! DON'T GO HERE! THE BLUE BERRIES ARE...
Read moreLet me start by saying I was very excited to try McKenna's as this place is all my daughter talks about since she lives in Massachusetts. Upon walking in, I thought it was such a cute place, kind of nostalgic, with all of the vintage signs and old school tables and booths. I love a good mom and pop place to go, but this was definitely not the feel from the staff at all.
I ordered the juevos ranchero and definitely did not get what I had asked for. I specifically asked for sunny side up eggs and a flour tortilla or wrap and was told by my server that it was doable. When my food arrived, the eggs were scrambled, and I did bring it to my servers attention . She was going to take it back, but I said nevermind I'll just eat it." However, upon going to eat it, I realized the tortillas were corn, so I then asked if they would please remake it as corn tortillas don't sit very well with me. My server returned and said we could give you the eggs sunny side up, but the cook was not going to give you the wrap. He said no. I looked at her and said your kidding right and she then replied with "no I'm sorry he's in a mood and doesn't want to do it.* i was literally taken back by the fact that this is what was said to me. I did tell my server i wanted my food off the bill since the cook decided i was not allowed to have my food the way i had asked. I've never done this because im usually the type of person to deal with it. Both of my daughters' faces hit the floor as they have both been servers in the past and said there's no way she just came back and said that. On top of this, I had asked for fresh jalapeños to which I was told they had, and when my server returned, she said, " we didn't have fresh jalapeños but we have this, whatever." With all of this happening, my oldest daughter asked to speak with a manager, and the woman that came out did apologize and said she would take it off the bill then proceeded to tell me "sometimes the cooks are in a bad mood and it is what it is" again flabbergasted by that response, I now know why the staff has poor attitudes. (Not all because I only had this interaction at McKenna's) as we were walking out there was one other woman that apologized but not much was said other than she was busy when we asked to speak with someone but at this point t I was over it and leaving.
Needless to say, my next visit to Massachusetts, I will not return to McKenna's, which is sad cause it seems like a cool spot where all the regulars know one another, and I love places like that.
UPDATE: I would highly recommend McKenna's, pay attention to their reviews as their reply to my review has absolutely nothing to do with...
Read moreIf you’re a kid out there who needs some pancakes well all you gotta do is go to Mckenna's Cafe. With their type of pancakes your teeth will melt for more and with the hot chocolate your taste buds will go nuts. The french fries are really awesome they also come with some salt. The building is so nice you must go inside.
I love the food because at Mckenna's Cafe they serve pancakes. Let me tell you my favorite pancake. My favorite is the triple chocolate chip pancake. And you should know why. It is a three stacked pancake with melted chocolate. I also like the hot chocolate because the servers usually put milk if it's really hot for kids. The hot chocolate is the best drink in my opinion. They also have little home fries. They taste a tiny bit like french fries to me. They look orange and also they’re usually black on the corners. A little burnt but good. They are really hot but once they are cooled down they are tasty. Yum! Desserts are the best I tell you.The one I like the best is the special chocolate pancakes.
I like the location because Mckenna's Cafe is in Dorchester and I live in Dorchester so it's pretty close to my home. But I think you would like it because it's close to a building site which is pretty cool isn't it? Also its close to a bridge that looks like its gonna fall but doesn’t fall .It’s also in a nice neighborhood. By the way. since Dorchester is a big neighborhood if any big issues happen lots of people are there to help.
I love this place. The building is okay. It’s a little small but not too small. It’s like a medium size. Sometimes people have to wait to sit down since it’s a really crowded space. The outside is spectacular. The color is what makes it look marvelous. If you're lucky you can get the seat where you can see the chefs working. Also there is a little hall if there is too many people. The employees are spectacularly nice, no rude language. They’re completely a bad word free place.
Once again if you want your life to be better, go to Mckenna’s Cafe right NOW! The food there is unspeakable. They serve pancakes, home fries, cold drinks & hot drinks. They also serve desserts. GO! Imagine you can stop eating the same old boring food for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and brunch.
