C'mon Barbie, Shy Bird Party!!!
I just had a great Sunday at SB in South Boston during their Barbie event. I was wary as this was my 1st time in S Boston and the most diplomatic comment is it looks like an "up and coming" neighborhood....we all know what that is a euphemism for. The fact is any Barbie event creates itself but Nia(h)[i hope that's right] certainly created a foundation for the event to thrive. I imagined being nauseous when I showed up at the sheer velocity of pinkness expected but it was just enough to celebrate the icon and feel enthused about channeling our inner 8 year old who probably dreamed of this but needed Nia to bring the concept to fruition. The balloons, the flower petals, the silver discs that shone like diamonds on the sunny day, the Barbie pennants on the booths inside, the gift bags of pink treats and a discount to Love Child which is a South Boston spectacular concept of wine and flower arrangements...I have not even mentioned the cocktails and the food. Seth made my 1st shot, which like the other cocktails was perfectly balanced. But THE FOOD. OH, THE FOOD...Oysters so fresh I do not know if they were farmed/bred for this event in particular or what; shrimp that were so large a new size should be established in our lexicon of adjectives; sliders; fresh &soft warm pretzel rolls; and the chicken bites. I believe SB is known for their chicken -as they should be. Identifiable white meat, juicy, crunchy batter that is not overwhelming the chicken, a BBQ sauce that is unlike any bbq sauce I have had in 30+years AND THE NUGGETS HAD GLITTER!!. My only regret of the event was ordering a pina colada cocktail which was delicious but it took away from the dessert I did not know was coming. I could only eat half but this moist cake perfection was lovely. It did not need the frosting, white chocolate bark or sugar cookie that came atop it, but whatever. The employees were also in pink and genuinely seemed happy and engaged. The best part of the event was a Toddler who strutted as if she owned the place and I AM SO HERE FOR IT! I do not know if she was a prop designed to remind us to live our best Barbie life everyday, but I support it. Between her Barbie dress and shades, she will undoubtedly be running a Fortune 500 company in 20 years. A huge thank you to Nia, Seth, servers with glitter hair, a pink runway, bartenders with smiles, and the entire SB Shybird team for making a Sun in Boston seem like a vacation day in Barbieland. It was well worth the ticket cost and I cannot wait for...
Read moreHave been dying to try out this spot ever since I got a taste of the chicken. I had it cold and day old AND if was freaking delicious!
Had to go in person and try it hot and fresh. Needless to say it didn't disappoint.
Our server, Dillion, did a great job even though it was only his 2nd day.
We started off with the premium room temp tap water that they bring to every table and a cocktail called Under The Counter (very refreshing and tropical with coconut, pineapple and orange). Surprisingly the tap water was quite good and no weird aftertaste of chemicals or minerals.
We started off with the Dinner for 2 (whole bird, fries and greens salad with the pecorino ranch as our sauce choice). This combination was really wonderful and a balanced meal. The green salad was lightly dressed and served as a palate cleanser for me. The pecorino ranch sauce is my all time favorite after trying all the sauces. We couldn't stop eating the chicken (moist, tender, well cooked and seasoned) and before long it was all gone. We wanted more but alas the chicken was sold out shortly after 7:30pm. Definitely, go early and order more than you think especially if there is a big eater in your group. . We also order the Roasted Cauliflower with lemon aioli but didn't taste like lemon aioli. It was good but would have preferred the cauliflower to be cooked a bit longer and have more char. Some of the bigger pieces were still quite hard to eat. The SB Dunks with Chipotle BBQ wasn't my favorite. I felt the chicken breast nuggets were a bite dry compared to the whole chicken. The side order of Rosemary and Black Pepper Fries was addicting enough I had to order another one We finished our meal with the Pretzel appetizer with Honey Mustard. Since there was no chicken to be had Looked at the dessert menu but it was lack luster for me. There was no chocolate dessert of any kind. Closest was a chocolate chip cookie but alas it contains almond flour and I'm allergic.
Can't wait for warmer weather to go back and sit in the patio. Til then this gal will be thinking of the mouth watering...
Read moreWe booked Shy Bird for lunch following a charity fundraising walk for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation that several of us were doing in Southie (three of our party lives in Southie). We arrived early, but the staff was able to accommodate us, and gave us a super table even though the restaurant was packed. The atmosphere was lively and upbeat.
The service was outstanding. Our waiter, Jack, was great -- very attentive and accommodating. After being served my Chipotle Chicken Breakfast Burrito, I commented to him that I did not think there was much chicken in my burrito. He immediately said they would make a new one, and within minutes, I had a new, improved burrito in front of me. Every other dish (fried chicken sandwiches, fried chicken Caesar wrap, smash burger) was terrific -- ample and delicious. Fabulous chicken.
Minutes later, Kayla, one of the managers, came over to apologize for the problem with the burrito and wanted to make sure I was satisfied. Kayla asked about our t-shirts (promoting the CF walk we'd just completed), and when we told her that we've been participating in the walk for 24 years because a family members has CF, she returned to the table with several of Shy Bird's signature fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies as a lovely gesture to congratulate us! Who does that these days?? The Shy Bird management team does, that's who!
I will return here again and again, for not only the terrific food but for the first-rate service and attention to detail. Thank you, Kayla, Jack and Shy Bird team! Keep up...
