So so yummy! We discovered this unassuming little shop after seeing it get written up in Boston Eater and boy am I glad we decided to swing by after catching a movie at South Bay. We ordered the oxtail roti (~$13) and the chicken bone-in dinner plate ($13), plus a peanut drink ($5). The oxtail roti was wrapped in soft, fragrant roti and accompanied by rice, beans, potatoes, and generous amounts of tender, fall-off-the-bone oxtail. Careful, it was bone-in! The bone-in chicken was similarly tasty, and accompanied by two sides of your choice -- I choose the cabbage which was a perfect partner; if not light, it was a nice vegetable pairing against the heavier chicken and rice. The potato side was also really tasty, fragrant and spicy. The peanut drink was a bit heavy for me, and very sweet, but I enjoyed it nonetheless (well, I drank a few swigs and saved the rest for later).
Sure, $30 for such a humble shop seems steep, but given how much meat you're getting and the size of the portions, it easily is lasting us 4 meals, so I say that's a huge win. Service is friendly. No parking but we were able to find a convenient space down the...
Read moreI saw a lot of negative reviews, but as a person of Caribbean heritage, I figured people were just put off by "bad service" aka "normal Caribbean restaurant service."
"I bet this place is a misunderstood gem" I told myself.
I ordered a Boneless Chicken Roti Dinner (with chana and potatoes). Pretty standard. It arrived intact and the portion was enormous, which was a pleasant surprise.
The roti skin was fine, and that's all the good that I can say. Never in my life have I ordered this kind of food and had it come to me unsalted. Not until today. It was so bland that I thought there was something wrong with my mouth. I think the chicken, potatoes, and chana were cooked together (which is totally fine) and that's why they all tasted so bad. The chicken was tough, and the potatoes swam in a watery, pool of what I think was supposed to be a sauce.
Underneath the chicken was a landslide of mushy, overcooked coconut rice that also wasn't salted. It had the consistency of oatmeal.
I should have known better. But...
Read moreSingh Roti Shop in Dorchester is a hidden gem. The service is warm and welcoming, the restaurant is spotless, and the staff is incredibly kind and attentive. It’s the kind of place where you feel appreciated as a customer.
I originally went to another location in Dorchester, but they were out of food at 3 PM with an hour-long wait. The place was run-down, not well-maintained, and seemed to be run by younger staff who weren’t well-equipped and lacked good customer service skills. That experience led me to Singh Roti Shop, and I’m glad it did.
The food here is fresh and full of flavor. The roti is soft, the curries are well-seasoned, and even the juices are made fresh. The mango lassi was especially good—smooth, creamy, and perfectly sweet. Everything tasted homemade and authentic, with generous portions that make it worth the trip.
This is the kind of small business that deserves support. The owner is humble, and you can tell they take pride in what they do. I’ll definitely be coming back and recommending...
