Applebee's Grill + Bar — Restaurant in Bridgeton

I decided to get half off appetizers at Applebee's. The host was very polite. He said there was about a 15 to 30 minutes wait. I looked around, and there were plenty of seats. It wasn't busy. But I understand if you are short staffed, it will be a wait. I said no problem. The place looked nice. It's been a while since I've eaten there. He seated us, and he said something to my server, and she didn't look too happy. She disappeared. Later, she came out of hiding and said something to the table next to ours. Later, I looked up, and she was gone. After a long wait, she came over and apologized for the long wait. She rushed us to take our order. That was fine. We knew what we wanted. She brought the drinks and appetizers. The drinks and food were great. I was done with my drink when the appetizer came. I wanted to order another drink. But she disappeared. After some time, I looked for her. She was nowhere to be found. I was purposely not finishing my food, waiting to order a different drink. Then I decided I was going to go ahead and eat and not get another drink. She is still nowhere to be found. I got a call. I needed to go to the emergency room.. I can't find my server. I stood up looking for her. Eventually, she appeared. She went to the next table and then came to me with a bill. I said, "Don't leave, I'm ready." I paid the bill and had to wait even longer for my change. I would have given it to her for a heft tip, but I didn't want to reward bad service. Not once did she check on us. She disappeared for long periods of time. Seeing that I was in a hurry to leave, she took an extended amount of time to return. I still gave her a tip even though she didn't earn it. I would have given them a 5 star review it weren't for the poor service that...

I generally like Applebee's. But I gotta say I don't think I've ever felt as discriminated against at I did at this particular one (sadly it was very subtle small things that just added up). Let's just say that the greater majority of the workers there that night were of a certain ethnicity that my mom and I are not. We waited about 10 minutes at the door to be seated (with at least 4 tables open in a couple different sections). It wasn't until a family came in behind us, of the same ethnicity as the workers, that someone even spoke to us. My mom had surgery a couple days before our visit so she was "handicapped", but in lieu of sitting us close we were taken to a back table. Once seated, we waited another 5 minutes or so before even being asked about drinks (mind you it was not a full busy night)..and about 5+ minutes after bringing drinks to order. I noticed what looked to be the manager walking through, chatting with tables..then he passed ours with a side-eye half smile, but not a word. Once our food was brought out the server wasn't seen much until we had finished eating. No drink refills, not much communication at all. We ordered dessert, it was brought out, then we paid and left. It's as if none of the workers were allowed to talk to us (we know that isn't the case) but they sure chatted it up with other customers (of the same ethnicity as them). First time here. Former server and in hospitality. Came in at 5 on a Sunday. There was plenty of tables open, but waited 15 min for our 4 top. No big. People walking in after us were seated immediately. After being seated our table was very sticky and dirty. We asked if we could have a wipe or something to wipe the table down. The host brought us a brown paper towel with a SQUIRT of hand sanitizer on it….. okay…..Our server took our order, she was not very happy to be there. Never greeted us or anything just came to the table and we ordered. Our server had two tables. Us and the couple behind us. She walked past us 4 times, to the table behind us, and asked if they needed anything. Not once did she ask if we were ok if we needed anything. Never got any refills. Even after visiting the table 4 times and on the fourth time saying excuse me, she walked away. After 45 min I got up and walked out with our child and our food had finally arrived. During our 45 min the people who were seated before us were walking out after having eaten and cashed out. My husband asked for boxes to go. Got the check 15 min later. Never again will I waste my time here. Not sure what the issue was- never had been here- we weren’t rude or impolite- it was weird. Pictured is a $16 meal. The chicken tenders were the “2 for $25”.
