I was craving some Korean wings and wanted to try a new place. I'm from NYC and generally have never been a fan of the Bon Chon chain - I would much prefer a local Korean bar or KTV lounge for the wings and bar food. I feel like anytime I've tried the chain, it's soggy and not very flavorful.
Fiya did not disappoint. I had the wings in the spicy and soy garlic flavors and both were cooked well - crispy but also doused in the sauce. I would come back just for this wings alone.
The Tteokkochi was pretty good. They tasted as I expected - crunchy, sweet, spicy. Perfect.
Their Korean corn dogs were decent. I only tried the normal panko breaded ones. The breading was nice and crispy, and had a nice chewy texture. I liked it and will have to go back and try the other versions. I'm not a big fan of this type of dish anyway, so I'm probably the last person who should offer an opinion.
I tried the Taiwanese Basil Fried Chicken and it wasn't too impressive. I'll add that I'm Taiwanese and have had this dish many times in my life, both in Taiwan and just home made by Taiwanese family and friends. I might be a bit of a snob about this dish; but in my defense it's really not hard to make. This one tasted a bit dry and under-seasoned. I wouldn't get it again (but, this is a Korean restaurant so I don't hold it against them).
My only issue was that the ambiance felt really awkward. I'm not sure how to describe it. We were seated and asked to place our order online via a QR code. At two points, we needed to get someone's attention (for a wrong order, which they were very nice about) but there was no one on the floor for a long time. If you're ok with a mix of a dine-in/take-out feel,...
Read moreThis review is for a takeout order. The main thing to note is that the servings are huge - less is more here. I got three corndogs. It was my first time trying korean corndogs and they are delicious! I love the batter, the consistency is similar to piroshki or yeasted donut dough which is very soft and chewy but crisp on the outside. I got one hot dog, one half cheese and half hot dog and I loved both. I also got the ramen corndog and I found it to be way too salty and I would not order it again. I also ordered 20 wings which was way way too much. Each piece is nearly twice the size of the typical wing you would get from an american wings restaurant. Needless to say, we had tons of leftovers which remained surprisingly crispy and delicious even after microwaving days later. The FIYA sauce is insanely spicy - I can only eat moderately spicy things and these were pretty much inedible to me. The sauce is like the coating on a BBQ potato chip and would have been delicious if less spicy. The honey mustard sauce was not spicy at all and very good. I also ordered nori-dusted fries and...
Read moreI came from philly, driving over 6 hours with my family to visit Boston over the weekend. We were craving Korean chicken and found this place online with positive reviews. We ordered their wings, taiwanese chicken, and corn dogs. The wings were excessively salty but edible. Maybe it is because I'm from philly with pretty decent korean chicken, but it was not to my liking. The taiwanese chicken was not what I expected. I have had them a couple times in philly from different places, but this one had a strong bay leaf smell and flavor. Lastly, the corn dogs. They were very disappointing. I got half mozzarella and half hot dog. The top mozzarella part tastes bitter for some reason. Had a very strange after taste. Taking that part off we noticed the batter around the hot dog part was not even fully cooked! It was raw. There was still wet batter in the corn dog making it inedible. I even took a photo. Overall, we couldn't and wouldn't finish any of the dishes. I am korean myself and have visited korea a couple times trying their chicken and corn dogs. Would not visit FIYA...
