I brought my family to Gopchang Story on Commonwealth Ave for the first time and was extremely disappointed, mainly due to the poor service. Don’t eat at this place unless you want to be ignored for 95% of your time there. By far one of the worst dining experiences I’ve had, particularly due to the disrespect of our waiter (pictured) who barely spoke to us or made eye contact. Also overpriced.
We ordered the spicy crab, marinated assorted gui, beef heart gui, fried rice, and the bombed steamed egg. The assorted gui was delicious, and everything else was okay.
The setting was quite nice, but everyone in my party of 4 was put off by how our waiter ignored us throughout the night. He never told us his name, but I included photos below. First, he forgot our sake, and we spent around 20 minutes trying to flag him down. We kept looking and waving at him, but he was either extremely busy or just pretended to not see us and walked by multiple times without acknowledging. By the time he finally stopped to listen to our request, we had already finished two dishes. And still, he didn’t return with it! We flagged down another waiter who kindly brought us a bottle. The next let-down was with our water. We ordered spicy dishes and finished our jug of water after the first meal. No one came to check on us, definitely not our waiter, and it took around 15 minutes to get the attention of a waitress who said “okay” and took our water jug away. She never returned with water, and we were left trying to get someone’s attention for another 15 minutes while our mouths burned. It took equal exhaustive effort to get more napkins for our table. The worst part was the delay in our last two dishes (beef heart and fried rice), which our waiter or the restaurant forgot about. We sat fiddling our thumbs for 30 to 45 minutes at a table full of empty plates and a completely eaten skillet, trash aplenty (no one took away or replaced our used dishes full of crab shells, finished napkins, and chopstick wrappers, though we consolidated them all for the waiters neatly at the edge of the table). We ended up telling three different people that we were missing our dishes, and when our waiter finally returned with our ordered food, he left them on the table and said nothing. Our table was also wobbling.
In total, our whole night (from 5:30 to 9) was wasted trying to get attention from waiters so we could have water, napkins, and the food we ordered. It’s really sad because I had been eyeing this place for a couple months now due to it being one of the only places I could find that serves raw crab, and we drove over an hour to experience it.
We felt like ghosts the whole time and honestly could have just walked out without anyone realizing. I’m not sure if it was due to the fact that we aren’t Korean and have darker skin or that’s just the way the restaurant is run, but either way, our night was ruined. Won’t be...
Read more-45min waiting time. Worth to wait! -try mix intestines, personally loved a large one. -add seafood pancake and a spicy crab
If you're a foodie with a sense of adventure, seeking to explore unique culinary experiences, then Gopchang Story, a renowned intestine restaurant in Korea, is a must-visit destination. Brimming with flavors and providing a full-blown sensory experience, this restaurant exceeded my expectations during my recent visit.
Gopchang Story has a fair variety on its menu, notably Gopchang (large intestine) and Gaochang (small intestine). A first-time visitor, like myself, might feel slightly daunted by the distinctive offering, but I was pleasantly surprised. I opted for the mixed option, which also includes a medley of entrails, such as the ends of intestines and tripes. This is a great option for newcomers, as it lets you experience and identify your favorites. My personal highlight was the Daechang (large intestine), which I found reminiscent of "Horumon", a similar dish often served at Japanese BBQ restaurants.
The culinary team at Gopchang Story puts on quite the performance, cooking the meal right in front of you, which I found to be a delightful touch. The other dishes we tried also reflected their commitment to quality. The seafood pancakes stood out with their crispy texture and generous prawns, quite a departure from the typical Korean restaurant pancakes. They were delightful, adding an extra layer of enjoyment to our meal.
Another surprise standout was the spicy crab - a must-try dish at Gopchang Story. Good spicy crab can be a rarity, but they've nailed it here. Diners are provided with plastic gloves to facilitate the messy but gratifying process of cracking open the crab, slurping out the succulent meat, and experiencing the tingling heat of the spices.
While the food was undeniably delectable, the experience was slightly marred by one staff member's discourteous attitude. However, this was overshadowed by the hospitality and friendliness of the rest of the staff, who made our dining experience enjoyable and engaging.
Despite the minor service hiccup, my overall experience at Gopchang Story was fantastic. I wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant to adventurous foodies and will certainly make a return visit when I...
Read moreYesterday I went to this restaurant for dinner, the food was very tasty, but the service attitude was extremely bad, so my friends and I were very unhappy and angry throughout the entire process of eating in the restaurant, as soon as we entered the restaurant and sat down, we were notified that we were required to change our seats, and the attitude was very bad, and then after we sat down, because the size of our bags was too large to fit in the storage box under the chair, and then was a girl waiter rolled his eyes, because we did not know that you can not smoke e-cigarettes, so when we took a puff, a boy named Jae hit me very hard on the shoulder and left. Because we didn't know that we couldn't smoke e-cigarettes in the store, when we took a puff, a male waiter named Jae hit me hard on the shoulder and then left, and there was also a black haired girl wearing a mask at the front desk, I don't know if she was a waitress or a manager, she came over and said in a very fierce manner that if we smoked e-cigarettes, we were going to be kicked out of the place, and that the store hadn't put up any signs indicating that e-cigarettes weren't allowed. There is no sign in the restaurant that says you can't smoke e-cigarettes, we can understand that the restaurant prohibits smoking, but we are guests, we need a good attitude to talk to us and we will be very willing to cooperate, why is it that almost all of the waitresses have a very bad attitude even before we smoke e-cigarettes, so that we feel racially discriminated against! When the seafood pot we ordered was ready to be served, the girl waitress came over to clean up the dishes, and I don't know why she slammed my beer glass so vigorously, I don't know if I'm the guest or the waitress is the guest, the meal was delicious, but with this attitude of service, and even more delicious and tasty I don't want to patronize your...
