Little touches can make a big difference. There are many little touches at Oscar's Kabob and Gyros that are enjoyable and pleasant, and uncommon in a small, strip mall eatery like this one. Most notable are the flowers and greenery everywhere - real flowers, live plants, not the plastic imitations you expect and often find. And the food? It is provided with a careful eye towards color and balance, so that even a ubiquitous red plastic basket looks rather nice. The service is superb; everyone is friendly and helpful, and busy. If they are not cooking, prepping, or serving, they are cleaning and tidying. Making little improvements in every corner and at every table.
For all these fine points, I was a little disappointed today with my gyro platter. I felt the meat was somewhat overwhelmed by the feta and the tzatziki sauce. I wish the pita bread had been toasted. Or at least more toasted, for it was cold and damp by the time I was halfway done. The fries were delicious, sprinkled with parsley flakes. That was another fine touch, there! But ketchup was not readily available at the table. You had to ask for the little packets from the counter. And then perhaps go up and ask again, since those little packets don't hold much.
Some flaws, then, but for the most part my visit was a positive (and tasty) experience. I intend to return soon. Little touches can count in a big way, in life and in dining. I am optimistic about trying some of the other appealing dishes...
Read moreGreat food amazing environment so welcoming. When I walked I was greeted by a nice short kid named Malachi who was so nice and helped me with all of my worries. One problem was that the food was basically unedible if you let it sit for more than five minutes also when I went into the bathroom random numbers written in poop all over the walls and when I walked out of the bathroom my food was Half Eaten. I ask Malachi what happened and he told me that there’s a homeless man that sits outside and comes and eats your food until you come back to your food. I was also told later that he likes to aggressively lick the sit which would explain why when I sat down it was moist. I’ve heard people have tried to stop him but he is a black belt in jujutsu and will attack anybody that comes in a five foot radius. Also his is super fast and will run away if any external force ever threatens him which is not very often. After I finished my food I was told that I needed to wait at least 30 minutes before leaving because if I walked out and the homeless man’s would smell the food on you and violently try to make you throw up so that he could eat the food then he would proceed to throw it up again so he could eat it again. I think he just really likes Greek food. Love...
Read moreMy husband and I ordered takeout after a long day. It was our first and last time ordering here. While the flavours were pretty good, we were underwhelmed by the pick up service and by the quantity of food for the price. I had to wait about 5 mins for the young kids in the back to acknowledge me and hail them down before I could get any service. For reference, there were two women outside and the rest of the restaurant was empty.
The gyro sandwich was mostly lettuce, which is not acceptable for 20$. The pita was soft, nearly soggy-not grilled. A few strips of gyro meat and some feta.
My husband got the shish Kebob platter. The bed of rice was plain cooked aside from a sprinkle of seasoning on top. The vegetables were completely charred. The steak was not cooked to order. He ordered medium rare and it was medium well. There were about 6~7 pieces of meat: the rest was the bland rice.
The falafel was rock hard, dry and overcooked. For the “combo deal” of a drink and falafel, I was expecting more than two pieces. Not more than three but, come on.
All in all, my pregnancy craving was not satisfied, and coming from (near) the Chicagoland area, I am disappointed and won’t be coming back. $50 is too much to pay for...
