Scalzotto is a bag of mixed signals. Let's start with the original reservation for Labor day dinner. Reservation was made and accepted. No communication from Scalzotto but the reservation maker "had a feeling" and called just to be sure and was told that Scalzotto would be closed. That would have been enough for me to avoid Scalzotto moving forward but this was not completely my choice. Moving on, another reservation was made and verified. We show up and were greeted promptly but even with a reservation the table was not ready, I will cut them a little slack as we were offered the choice to eat inside or outside. Let's start with the mask wearing, staff should have masks covering nose and mouth, its just the world we currently live in so please do it properly. We ordered calamari for an appetizer and it may have been the best calamari I have ever had. Beverages were usually empty at the table and this continued throughout the dinner as well. Dinners arrived in parts, and the last dinner took much longer to arrive than the others. When the person missing dinner tells the other people at the table twice to start eating before their dinner arrives that's a problem. I had the spaghetti and meat balls. Nothing to write home about as the sauce was not bursting with flavor and spaghetti was nothing special. I wanted to compliment my dinner with some Italian sausage but the only way to get that was if you ordered the spaghetti and sausage and it came pre cut in the sauce, you remember when your mother cut your food for you? Why a simple piece of sausage is not available is beyond me? I did try it as the waitress brought a side of sauce with the sausage in it. Once again I just was not wowed since the appetizer. Other than the gnocchi all the other dinners were met with a similar lack of enthusiasm. Don't forget beverages running dry at the table throughout the dinner. Okay let's move on to dessert, coffee and cannoli for me, the cannoli was a dream and probably one if the top three cannolis I have ever had. Coffee was bitter and downright disgusting, I was not the only one to have coffee but we both shared that opinion. Time to pay, this was beyond unbelievable. Two families were at the table and we simply split the bill in two. We paid with cash and a credit card. We told our waitress how much to put on the credit card. No math involved. 10 minutes later with the help of the entire staff gathered at the counter they could not do as we had asked. The server came back with a mystery amount on the card. We filled in the amount to total what we had requested. Overall the food was okay when averaged and service was below par at best. While the staff was very friendly it simply could not make up for fragmented dinner delivery, usually empty beverages and whatever that payment debacle was all about. At an average of 40 dollars per person before tip I don't feel that Scalzatto was a good value. Sadly I will continue to drive to the Wheat Ridge area to get Italian food with...
Read moreHad an excellent experience at Scalzotto last night. First and foremost, the food was very good. Everything we ordered was freshly prepared, tasted homemade and presented well. I regret not taking any photos because I wasn't initially planning to write a review. We had their bruschetta appetizer which allowed us to choose any 3 of 5 varieties of bruschetta. We opted for a classic tomato, an Italian sausage and mushroom, and a grilled peach and burrata. All three were excellent. I might have wanted the bread toasted a little more but that is nitpicking. For entrees, I had the chicken Milanese with broccolini and fettuccine Alfredo. My friend has the Italian sausage penne. My chicken dish was prepared very well with two pieces of flattened moist chicken breast pieces with a simple Marsala sauce and mushrooms. The sauce wasn't too sweet and there was just enough sauce to enjoy without overdoing it. The sides (broccolini and fettuccine were ample in portion). The fettuccine was really nice pasta (they make the pasta in-house) and cooked Al dente. Better yet, the kitchen showed restraint with the Alfredo sauce which was also well prepared and appeared homemade. Having just enough sauce for the chicken and the pasta kept the flavors distinct on the plate - it could have been a problem, but was not at all. My friend raved about his penne dish and there was nothing left of any of the food we ordered. I finished things off with an affogato - it was very nice to have the option of selecting any of their in-house made gelatos, but I stuck with the classic vanilla. Nice finish to a very good meal!
Our server (Ashlee) was outstanding, friendly and pleasant! She asked if we had visited before (we had not) and then offered to make recommendations based on any interest areas we had. Throughout the meal, multiple servers cleared dishes, silver and took care of drinks attentively. Our server took a photo for us afterwards as well. Could not ask for more.
The restaurant was clean, spacious and we had a nice two-top by the window. Tables were spaced nicely and while it was just half full on a Wednesday night, it was a lively, but not overly noisy dining room.
The menu offered lots of options for any taste. The menu is not set up as a traditional Italian menu especially with choices of sides and pastas with mains as opposed to a primi, secondi, contorni style menu. However, don't let that fool you into believing this is like an Italian-American chain. The food is much better and much more authentic. I have to say that I was very pleasantly surprised - thus feeling the need to post this review.
To top everything off, the prices are very reasonable and the portions generous but not overdone. I would not hesitate to return the next time I'm in the area. It's fantastic to have a nice family-run place with homemade food. ...

----original review---- First, the bad— our waitress was terrible. I don’t know her name, but she was older. She interrupted our conversation multiple times mid-sentence, often for things that didn’t warrant an interruption (“Can I get that unused glass from you?”). Anything we asked her, she said “I’m not a good one to ask” and gave no useful advice whatsoever. We asked about the asparagus soup: “I’m not a good one to ask. I don’t eat puree and it’s made with puree.” It’s asparagus soup, you don’t expect big stalks of asparagus in it— of course it’s puree! “Is it tasty?” we asked. “We don’t sell a lot of it.” We took a chance and it was delicious!! Also, when she first walked up to our table, she was fidgeting with her mask and pulled it down under her nose and left it like that... THEN she coughed loudly in the mask several times as a commentary that the mask was protecting us from her coughs?? I mean, what the heck— there are a lot of people out of work who would take this job and do well.
The good— our meals were fantastic!!! They made a chicken piccata for my date, which made her very happy and she loved it. I had the gnocchi with bacon— I wish the bacon was crispy or maybe crispy prosciutto instead.
I’d go back, but I’d be unhappy if we had this same waitress. Sadly, I believe this restaurant will fail because of the waitress and the poor experience with her.
Update July 30, 2021: We have eaten here two more times since the review above. The decor looks worse just about every time we visit. This place needs an interior designer to come in and help them make it a nice place, it could be amazing. Wait staff congregate in groups to chat with one another, sometimes failing to get back to your table in a timely manner. Also, I keep finding that wait staff are rather unfamiliar with the menu. I truly believe that this restaurant is surviving for the present only because Broomfield has limited dining choices. Wine is...
