This has always been one our favorite place. Always had the best egg rolls and orange beef. But today was very disappointing. Pork eggrolls were barely warm, filling was cool, lacked flavor, and we're dry. Frankly they tasted frozen and heated in a toaster oven. In the past, they were hot, crispy, the filling was tasty, moist, but cabbage crispy. Our server obliged and brought another one but it was the same. Their orange beef, which was the best anywhere, was not the same today. The only thing that was the same was the coating - crispy as always but not only was the beef tough and chewy, the orange sauce lacked any orange flavor but was over powered with Chinese Five Spice seasoning. Usually the orange flavor packs a punch and is balanced with sweet and a little spicy heat. Even the side of rice was room temp. None of the food was hot and usually it's steaming.
The Pad Thai was bland, noodles were overcooked, it had very little egg, the shrimp was gummy and tasted frozen and thawed a few times, the few mung beans/sprouts were limp and seemed canned. Last, the sauce lacked that umami balance.
We were really hungry so we ate but were very disappointed and are hoping it's a one off.
We brought home leftovers and family munched on it but had the same comments and not believing we brought it home from Shanghai Tokyo.
There was only 1 waiter working, one lady who may have been a manager sat at a table and didn't pay attention to the room, two sushi guys stood gazing out the windows, and there were very few customers for Saturday dinner time.
I hope this isn't a sign that this place is failing because we were always happy to drive an hour to enjoy...
Read moreDidn't even go here to eat. I called because I was in the mood for Chinese food, but I also wanted a place where I could have a few drinks. I couldn't even get them to tell if they have a liquor license or not. For whatever reason, I seemed to be able to hear her but everything I said was met with "what, I can't hear you". I don't have time for that so I gave up.
Guess I should have just read the reviews and I would have found out it was BYOB but beer isn't what I wanted anyway.
I always take other people saying Chinese food is great with a grain of salt because I've never found a Chinese restaurant that tops Bill Ung's Teagarden that used to be on Murray Avenue in Squirrel Hill.
Decided to give this place another shot and the food is very good. It's definitely the best I've had in the Pittsburgh area. Still not better than Bill Ung's but very good and it's a nice quiet...
Read moreMy family ordered takeout Paid $75+ for food that was basically inedible. My Szechuan Beef had no flavor at all. The texture of the beef was as they boiled the beef and heated it up per order. The fried rice that came with it, also tasteless. Had nothing in it. No egg, peas or carrots. I think they just heated white rice on a dirty grill. It sure tasted that way. My son's pork lo mein also was flavorless and the pork seemed boiled as well. My daughter had shrimp lo mein. The shrimp were coated in what I assume was cornstarch. But not deep fried, just sauted, they were slimy. And had a horrible taste that I cannot even describe. From now on ill wait for Ocean Dragon down the road to be back from vacation before I ever eat...
