The food was delicious, but the yellowtail collar ($11.27) was much smaller than I expected. It did come with a lovely salad, and perhaps for someone else, it would have been suitable, but it really did not have much meat on it. It was a very nice piece, though.
The takoyaki ($4.86) was incredible - perfectly crispy and golden on the outside, soft and well seasoned on the inside. It was average sized but only 3 pieces. Most places I've been do 4, and that would have been preferable. There is only one piece of octopus in it, as well. This doesn't detract from the quality of the dish; it really was some of the best I've had recently. It's just notable as a point of comparison.
Food got one star knocked off for the aforementioned reasons - I'd only do a half star, but it won't let me. Service loses a star because we ordered spicy garlic edamame ($5) right off the bat, but it didn't arrive until we were more than half done with our food. It was very spicy but good. It also took quite a long time to receive the check after we requested it. Our server, Alec, was very attentive and kind, showing us the menu and letting us know about the dessert, but the kitchen was a touch inconsistent in regards to time.
Other items on the table included a salmon skin hand roll I am told was EXCELLENT ($5.61); a blue crab hand roll that was not great ($6.27); (fantastic) chicken kaarage curry ($17.75); and tempura shrimp and baked salmon rolls ("very good!") ($6.07, $6.27). Not pictured was an aburi shimesaba roll ($8.35) that knocked our socks off with the meaty quality of the Japanese mackerel, a Sapporo ($4.99) and a round of free matcha roll cakes for having left a review which were obviously kept frozen but still had very strong matcha flavor and was a refreshing end to the meal.
We sat outside on the patio because the inside was full except for the bar. I think we came just at the start of the dinner rush, about 5:30 pm on a Friday night. Right next to the patio was a sort of alley leading to the parking structure, where someone was playing saxophone. They were pretty good, but they only played about 10 songs in a sort of loop. We were also directly opposite the AMC, and just down the way was a bustling collection of street vendors all lined up. As a result, the ambiance on the patio was relaxed but high energy - the vibes were chill, but the noise and bustle could be overstimulating for some. It was pretty nice, though, and even though it's hot out, it's surrounded by tall buildings so we were not in...
Read moreWent here while killing time before a movie and to wash down some cold stone with a little bit of something savory. Not usually my first choice of sushi place though it's right in front of the theaters and figured it was probably decent for a quick bite.
Ordered a rainbow roll, lemon salmon roll, truffle salmon sashimi and miso albacore sashimi.
Pros:
Older asian man who served us was kind
Presentation was nice all around
Sauces were pretty good on both the sashimi
Were able to customize the lemon salmon roll to have non spicy tuna rather than spicy
Truffle salmon sashimi was ok
Cons:
Brought out rolls with ginger and wasabi touching them after asking not to since I am allergic so we had to ask for new rolls
Albacore was pretty dry and rough to the touch on the outside of each piece and not very fresh (thought I'd get food poisoning after noticing this)
All things we ordered besides the truffle salmon did not seem fresh or at the minimum decent cuts of fish (I took a chewy piece of tuna out of my mouth after tasting the rainbow roll and almost every bite I had the fish was chewy not very flavorful or wasn't good quality)
Crab was super salty in the rainbow roll
Best part of all of this was a heavier set possibly middle eastern employee, likely a server with some of the dirtiest white shoes I've seen, after begrudgingly coming over to our table after calling for assistance multiple times to change our original roll with ginger decided to continue his excellent service by dramatically and sarcastically saying "thank you" and wave when we were leaving like somehow we didn't follow the simple instructions given and we had served old chewy fish
Low professionalism and below subpar quality of sushi after giving this place a second chance and due to the overtly rude nature of that server I can concretely say I won't be...
Read moreUPDATED: Just ordered a pickup, missing the chicken in my husband’s Chicken Beef Tempura plate and Please don’t smash the chicken for the curry so flat that it makes the chicken so dry and tasteless and require me to drown it with the sauce. My husband walked in to pickup, wish someone would say…”Will be right with you” instead of just walking right past him and left him wondering what to do or where to go. I called the restaurant twice, no one answered, I know they were busy.
First review: I haven't been here for awhile since their menu was limited. So we were there yesterday to catch a quick bite before a movie, I was expecting the same old menu from a couple years ago, pretty much just sushi and a few bowls. I was going to order the chicken teriyaki bowl as I did before. To my SURPRISE! they have expanded their menu! They now include bento boxes and they actually have curry now! Because the last 2 times I was there, curry was on the menu, but it was not being serve. Of course I ordered the curry chicken cutlets and it was really good, it reminded me of Curry House in J town if you ever been there. Reasonably priced. On a side note, I wanted a knife to cut my chicken cutlets, but they did not have knives, not even plastic knives, which is good, we don't need more plastic in the landfill anyways. I had to use my big spoon. Kinda weird to provide a real metal spoon and a plastic fork. I don't know why two different material . Anyways, good experience, keep up the good work. Thanks to Brandon for a quick check-out to get to our movie. . Wished I remembered to take a photo...darn, next time! Would definitely be...
