The food here at Shiki is decent, although I do think you could get better Japanese food for roughly the same price as what you would pay here. The last visit I came here I ordered a two-item combination with the chicken cutlet and teriyaki beef. The combination dinner plate comes with a side salad and miso soup where were about average. The chicken cutlet was pretty good, though. The breading had a hint of curry and was served with a small dab of mustard that really brought out the flavor of the curry in the chicken breading. The beef was slightly under cooked and with the teriyaki sauce, it just seemed like something I could throw together at home for a fraction of the price. The grilled vegetables did not seem to compliment either of the proteins - they consisted of onions, peppers, zucchini and mushrooms. Some of the onions were burnt to a char and were still served to me.
The least pleasant part of my night here, though, was the extremely unpleasant scent that I could only describe as a backed up toilet - I could not pinpoint the source of the smell, but I want to contribute it to some kind of seafood they were preparing at the teppan grill, perhaps scallops or shrimp with the shell on? It only made me and my party want to finish my food sooner so that we could leave.
They also have yakiniku (Japanese BBQ, similar to what you would find at popular all-you-can-eat Korean BBQ joints), however absolutely no one at the restaurant took advantage of this dining option. At Gyu-Kaku in Rancho Cucamonga, nearly everyone there opts to dine in this fashion, but then again. Shiki Sushi is not really known for this, as Gyu-Kaku is known for this style of Japanese cuisine. One other strange thing is that they have a sushi bar here, but no all-you-can-eat option. It is a little strange to have a sushi bar but no AYCE option. I cannot really recall many places that have a sushi bar where customers are seated, but do not have an AYCE option.
I would not choose to dine here again. If I had been invited to eat here for a birthday party or any other event, I would probably...
Read moreWe were great regulars from here until today. Placed or tried to place a 150+ dollar TO -GO order over the phone. To be told after the fact that it’s there policy to take payments over the phone. Since when? I know in the very being yes this was true. But then they wanted Cash instead, even put it on the Receipts that if you use card, there’s an additional 3% added to bill. So we made sure to always have Cash, and we’ve been doing to go orders, many to go orders over the phone for a while now (& yes at the Redlands location,) then we go & pay cash in person. So I expand this to the girl taking my order she said is always been there policy. (Lol so when it’s convenient for them guess, but not true I don’t know if she was new) But the problem is my husband wasn’t home and he had my card as well as his. So I asked if she can ask a manager if we can pay in person like we always have ( mind you we go there often like 1-2 times a week) she puts me on hold and literally like 20sec later she said they said no. To be honest I don’t think she even asked that was way to fast. But ok I told her I would call back to give her the card info I was gonna get it from my husband. She said I would have to call again and replace the whole Order again because it can’t be saved onto the POS. So again I’m like ok it’s Mother’s Day im being understanding. So I’ll call back, they leave me on hold for 20 min. ( Lol again understanding but come on) So I hang up to call again and now no answer just keeps saying line is busy. (I’m really thinking it was on purpose now.) It sucks because my Mom, myself, & family members really wanted sushi from here for Mother’s Day. But unfortunately you guys just lost a bunch of regulars. & yes you guys could have been busy because it’s Mother’s Day but I also know you guys always have a lot of staff always working & if that wasn’t the case, it’s due to poor management because you didn’t schedule enough people or people quite or don’t show up for reasons also still due to...
Read moreHow Do You Order Vegan and End Up with SHRIMP?!
I recently visited Shiki Sushi in Redlands, CA, with my family after confirming with the host that they had vegan options. Unfortunately, this became one of the most humiliating and frustrating dining experiences I’ve ever had.
Our server, Hairo, assured us that our vegan orders would be prepared separately from seafood or animal products. However, when our food arrived, there was shrimp on the plate! I immediately brought this to the server’s attention. He took the plates back, only to return without the vegetables we had ordered. When I asked why, he admitted they were fried in shrimp oil and then, in an elevated tone, said, “Do you want them or not?!” I tried to clarify and figure out my options, but instead of resolving the issue, he slammed his order book, stormed off, and said, “All right then.”
How does a restaurant reassure you they can meet your dietary needs, then serve you SHRIMP, and still act like they’re doing you a favor?
I asked to speak to the owner after the manager informed me that the owner had refused to assist us further. While the manager initially offered to remake our meals to-go at no charge, he later returned and said the owner decided they wouldn’t do anything for us. Meanwhile, the cleaning staff had already discarded all the untouched food without consulting us.
This experience was not only disappointing but also deeply embarrassing. My daughters were visibly upset, one even crying, as we stood in a full restaurant being dismissed. A kind waitress apologized for the server’s behavior, but the owner's refusal to address or resolve the situation aligned with the same rudeness and lack of care.
As a customer, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect clear communication, respect, and adherence to dietary needs. Instead, our time, energy, and trust were completely wasted. I hope management takes this feedback seriously and implements changes to ensure no one else has to endure this kind...
