The food came out quickly. I got a Jersey Jocks Dillberry Chicken Salad Sandwich and an omelet with spinach, tomato, mushroom, and cheddar, and a hot chocolate. The omelet was pretty bland and I had only two small pieces of mushroom in the whole thing. A mild white cheddar was used in it. I should have asked more questions about the cheese. So yeah, it could use more mushroom. I also thought the omelet was a little wet. I wanted it cooked a little more, but I was hungry. It makes more sense to me now why the server asked me if I wanted hot sauce or anything like that as soon as he brought it to the table. Also for the omelet cheese is extra at $1.99, and each topping is $.99 each- so for the mushrooms that is a buck, the spinach- a buck, and the tomatoes another dollar. The omelet itself is $7.99. The sandwich had my heart it was hearty mixed well and not too fatty- I would recommend it. Jersey Jack’s Dillberry Chicken Salad was $11.99. I asked for gluten free bread instead of what normally comes with the order and they had it, which was a pleasant surprise for both dishes. Which as far as I know did not cost more. The homefries on one plate tasted much better than the other as one had more burnt bits that I was not into. Hot chocolate is $2.79. I think I was overcharged so I called and left a message and shot them an email.
The atmosphere is great, I came later in the day so It wasn't loud or crowded. Nice ambiance. If you have a walker or wheelchair beware. I had to go to the bathroom and it is a narrow single stall. I am not that big and I had to work on maneuvering around the small space that also includes the sink. They may have another bathroom on the premises I am not aware of, so maybe call ahead and ask? Salt, sugar, pepper and ketchup were on all the tables, and I was given extra napkins without issue.
I came close to closing apparently, so I the food I wanted to go that I cancelled worked out perfectly because I was told they would not be able to accommodate it anyway because the kitchen was closing.
The sandwich bumps it up to 3 stars for me. I miss having my own kitchen and cooking on days like today when I think, " I could have made this better." If you need food fast and you have no issues asking for extra seasoning...
Read moreVisited again in October of 2023: I've visited several times since that first time in 2021. The food continues to be excellent. The service tends to be a little slow on weekdays, but as long as you're not in a hurry it's good. I'll continue coming back as long as they're open!
Migrated below review from another platform regarding a visit in June of 2021: I saw this place a few days before it opened as my friends and I walked past it, and we went a week or so ago. The place was packed, but we were able to quickly get a seat in the shade on the back patio (it was 80 out, so this was perfect).
Our server was very good. I don't remember their name, but they had some blue in their shortish curly hair.
The food was also pretty good. Based on the name, I was hoping the donuts would be great, and I can't say that I cared much for the one I had. It was a plain cake donut with chocolate frosting and sprinkles on it. Unfortunately they were entirely out of yeasted donuts, and I wasn't going to go to a restaurant with donut in the name and not get a donut. Oh well. My meal, which was a burger on an English muffin was very tasty. It was just what I wanted, and I have no complaints about it whatsoever. Well executed. Next time I'll get it on a bagel, but that's my personal preference. It was objectively good. The real news here, though, is the fries. They were great. They could have done with a little better flavor, more seasoning, and a slightly thinner cut, but they were blanched perfectly and had excellent texture. There aren't many places that do that well around here, and I would be back just for that, though I'm definitely interested in trying out their other things and hopefully scoring a yeasted donut so I can give that a fair shake. Oh, and the pricing is not at all bad either, especially for being in...
Read moreThere are plenty of phenomenally curated breakfast places around. But we do enjoy a good old-school greasy spoon diner once in a while. There are plenty of good ones in the area that we also frequent. After three tries, Donut Villa is just a crappy experience that falls short all around. This place tries too hard to look the part with that typical overplayed 80s decor and all, but the food and service are just terrible and rude, bland and sloppily made. Dirty overcooked eggs? yuck. Their donuts are stale, way sweet, and weird tasting. It's really just disgusting. Who can eat this garbage. Dunkins and Stop & Shop is way better by comparison, also not overpriced. Service was slow as a snail, pretty much nonexistent. Food took forever to come. No coffee refills, no nothing but "ready for the check?" 5 minutes into our food, wtf. They had the audacity to rush us. Restrooms smells putrid, makes you not wanna eat after, so go after you eat, not before. No wonder why their Newton location closed after a short run. Been there too, same crappy food coupled with crappy attitudes. These rude people are clueless amateurs at best, not restaurateurs. They need to find someone who can at least cook eggs and bacon proper first.
I'm not sure how they claim they have 50+ years diner experience on their website. According to google, in 2018 they purchased the original donut villa in Malden, owned by someone else unrelated for over 40 years. So they're basically new owners with zero experience who took the previous owner's experience and crediting it as their own. That's hilarious and pathetic way to mislead your customers. The terrible food we had and the tons mixed reviews speak for itself....
