My mother and her friend went to Ecclesia Bakery early one morning for what should have been a peaceful, welcoming experience. Instead, they left feeling humiliated, disrespected, and ostracized. My mother is a kind, intelligent Black woman who carries herself with grace. Her friend, an Asian woman, was treated with respect during their visit, but my mother was blatantly dismissed.
The restaurant was empty aside from them. When her friend’s coffee was ready, it was personally hand-delivered to the table, steaming hot. My mother ordered a hot chocolate, and instead of showing her the same courtesy, the server yelled “Hot chocolate!” from behind the counter, as if my mother should retrieve it herself in the middle of an empty room. The message was loud and clear: She wasn’t worth the effort.
The drink itself? Lukewarm and barely drinkable, as though the same lack of care that went into serving it extended to making it. The pastries they ordered were doughy and underbaked—sloppy and unappealing, matching the tone of the service.
This wasn’t just bad service. It was blatant racism. To see this kind of treatment in 2024 is infuriating, but it’s especially appalling in a business owned by minorities. You should know better. You should do better. Instead, this bakery chose to alienate and demean a woman who simply wanted to enjoy her morning.
There is no excuse for this. None. Treating someone as lesser because of the color of their skin is disgusting, and it has no place in a business—or anywhere. My mother deserved respect, but instead, she was made to feel unwelcome and unwanted. If you care about decency and fairness, take your money somewhere else. This place...
Read moreI will not be coming back here, which is a shame because I really like this place and want to recommend it, I was thinking of trying a bunch of their different pastries this month, now that I recently reinstated my Spending budget.
As cozy as the atmosphere is, unfortunately, they are “only open to paying customers.” My roommate and I have visited this place on a near-weekly basis and have always bought at least one item each time — until today, when we were confronted.
That is understandable, but speaking for myself, that did make me feel disrespected. I wasn’t hurting anyone, and we were the only guests there at the time, so it’s not like we were taking space at a fancy restaurant. I’ve test-driven Audis, Teslas, and Dodges. I’ve worn Rolex watches. I was never met with unwelcome dialogue for not buying anything.
Penny-pinching like that is simply not good business; that’s how you lose friends and not influence people, in my opinion, and in the opinions of the debt-free cash-flow millionaires I’m connected to.
What if I can be a referral source? What if I meet someone and recommend to them your business? What if I chose to use that location for meet-and-greets for professional networking, whether with potential business partners or building relationship with the ones I’m already working with, who in turn have their own colossal spheres of influence? The people I’m meeting with would have an extremely high chance to buy something out of urge!
As much as it pains me to say it, that one confrontation cost them a fortune in revenue down the line.
Let this be a lesson in how you run your business, and how you treat people, whether they’re giving you...
Read moreTaking one star away because I stopped by here three days in a row and they were out of all 5 types of breads that I was looking for by 6PM. They close at 11PM so I don't think that's how it should be. Ok so the most important thing you need to know is I don't like bread. Having said this you will understand how outstanding their baked goods are when I tell you that I always end up eating tons of their goodies when I'm around them! It's hard to explain exactly what it is about these guys but I'll try. The quality of the bread is really good and the quantity of their fillings, toppings, and crumbles are mind blowing! I'm going to directly compare them to a really popular bakery across the street called 85 degrees. If you have been there and like their breads then you MUST come here and give these guys a try because they really knock them out of the water!! I tried their green tea red bean bread, pumpkin bread, cake slices, and a cream filled sharable soboro bread. They were all really on point. The bread was soft and puffy, there was more than plenty of filling inside, and the outside had just enough of a "bite" to it. I literally can't get enough of their bread!! And unlike 85 degrees the breads don't have a cheap lackluster type of feel to them. Did I mention how cheap they are, too?? Just go here .. it's a favor to me and...
