Once, I was an enthusiastic fan of Tous Les Jours. Buying bundles of bread, looking for new items, and coming back for more, I loved coming here. Always after getting groceries from Hmart, I would look forward to browsing through the bread selections, searching to find which I'll take home and to share and enjoy with my family.
With soft colors of green and cream, Tous Les Jours felt like an authentic, classy, and vintage bread store. Or so I thought.
Within the past 5 years, the owner changed. It was a Korean, middle-aged lady before, but now is a different younger lady. And there was a significant difference.
First you must know. All of the ingredients of Tous Les Jours is NOT high quality or made fresh daily. They use the cheapest ingredients although their business tactic is the persuade you into thinking it's trustworthy and quality products. By "made fresh daily" they mean they take it out of boxes and defrost it in the oven. All the workers that make, touch, and handle the bread are Mexican. Some of which were very quite rude.
The interior is almost always dirty and looks like a hurricane blew through the store with reciepts everywhere and empty cups in disarray on the counters, while the cashiers seem to change often every month.
Word of caution: Do not order cakes from here. This is a buy in store kind of business and lack heavily in every other kind of business like customer service. So just get your bread and pay the amount and that's it. I did a cake order a week prior. It was for a very special occasion, my mother's 60th birthday. It's still difficult to write word for word what happened. I ordered a cake with purple and pink colors. I come to the store on the day I was to pick up. The front lady was in a fiasco, causing me quite some stress and panic, when she said, "I can't find the order." The place was in a mess when it was 9:00 PM when they should just be starting their business.
Finally when she did bring the cake, it was a cake right off from Costco. There was bright, dark purple and pink flowers on the cake. It did not look like a Tous Les Jours Korean cake. I voiced my comments. She did not help by saying, "It looks perfectly fine. This is the style." She tried helping me by suggesting to add letters here or add a heart, which only worsened my mood, because she did not have any cake decorating skills as she was the cashier. We finally came up with something. She told me to wait for 30 minutes.
The cake came out with an boiling angry Mexican worker, making me feel very uncomfortable. The cake looked better. After 5 hours for the birthday the celebration, I took a bite of the cake. It was soggy and wet with old fruit toppings. I've eaten several Tous Les Jours cakes before and this was the worst.
Apparently, my struggles with Tous Les Jours knew no end.
I called them a day later voicing my complaints. I first spoke with an Asian, young teen girl who said that the manager wouldn't do refunds. I kept calling and she kept sparring with me.
Finally, the manager, Kevin, called me. He had the most vile and malicious attitude towards me.
I was trying to tell him what happened when he says, "I can't hear you!" multiple times when I spoke fine with the other worker. He says "What was your name again ??!!" in a threatening tone. Then he said, "I heard you say you're going to call the headquarters." He also asks, "So what was wrong with your cake again?" After I spoke with them multiple times, he still didn't know so I tell him, "It was soggy and wet. The cake was out for too long." He said doubtfully, "But you said it was dry before to my worker." Then he articulates to me, "You get one bad lemon out of a basket. I make over 100 cakes per week! So what your cake was bad."
I was speechless. He deviously said everything he wanted then at the end offered me the gift card. Worst customer...
Read moreI went to reserve a birthday cake one week in advance to make sure we got the one we wanted. An older Korean lady proceeds to take my order for the cake, but then sternly tells me they make that cake everyday, no need to reserve, just buy it that day. Her attitude was lazy and came off rude like I was either asking for something absurd, it was too much trouble to write down the order, or a poor attempt to sell off unsold cakes on the day (based on my previous experiences with stale cakes and pastries). I opted to reserve the cake because for the past 4 times I've been to Hmart, the Black Sugar Buttercream cake was not on display and it isn't listed as an available menu item on their website. Mind you, there isn't a bakery out there that does not accept advance reservations, excluding ones selling limited or certain exclusive products on a first come first serve basis. Last I checked, Tous Les Jours is not one of those. I wanted to ensure I received a fresh cake on that particular date and not pick up a dry and stale one that's been sitting for a few days like the last Green Tea Cloud and a Holiday Snowman cakes (snowman cake was so stale and the cream slightly hardened that it made the price tag sting even more). I give 3 stars for food only because their cakes are pleasing to the eyes and, when fresh, do taste nice. Sadly, they need to realize that they aren't the only store or franchise that serves these exact pastries and cakes. Their service is a real problem and turning a blind eye towards quality makes it worse. A bad experience really sticks. I'm going to choose to go elsewhere for my cakes and pastries from now on because their offerings unfortunately and realistically aren't exactly unique from other Korean bakeries with almost identical flavors and products with much better service. I chose this location out of conveniece, but more than 3 bad experiences is enough to...
Read moreWe bought a new year cake and it tastes horrible. I normally like their bread and have bought cake from them before in their Plano location but never have bad experience. This time, this chocolate cake from carollton was OLD and hard and the cream is NOT fresh. The cream is totally different from what they normally use in their bread and cake. It’s much more buttery and NOT soft texture. Even my 12 years old who loves chocolate cake would not eat it after trying a piece. Now I recall there were 6 same looking chocolate cake in the fridge and we just walked in to buy one. It may be left over from previous days. I cannot believe they sell such old cake. I have no words to describe the Awkward taste And felt like we wasted $32 on a this thing!
We also bought the cream bread. The typical that I buy from their Plano location. We bought both standard cream and mocha cream this time in carollton. We strongly feel like this store try to “cheap out” the customers. The amount of cream is half the normal amount they use in the Plano ones. I hardly tasted any cream between the bread. Will never buy from this location again.
If the Plano store goes down hill like the carollton store, we will...
