This isn't your regular Indian/Nepalese joint. One of the common conceptions is that most Indian restaurants are the same. I have to admit that is how I see it, with very few exceptions. This one is decidedly different!
It is a pretty unassuming place. It's in a strip mall, and you shouldn't expect a white tablecloth experience. However, come for the food, stay for the food
Starting with the biriyani - it is wholly unlike any I have had in this area. Instead of a homogeneous rice dish, the biriyani at Nepal House is comprised of distinct flavors that come together. It is difficult to describe, but you can taste all of the components of the dish, even down to the cinnamon and anise.
My 11 year old son is a big fan of butter chicken, and he is especially fond of the dish they serve. He says it is more "flavorful" than butter chicken at other places in the area. That's high praise coming from my little foodie.
Naan. Even the naan has its own twist - my family is partial to the garlic flavor. Again, high praises from the kid, who loves, loves, loves garlic. I have to agree, its garlicky, buttery goodness probably won't make you any healthier, but it sure as hell will make you happier.
The momos are wonderful. If you haven't had them, they are savory dumplings. What sets them apart is that (I think) they don't come from a bag. These seem to be made in house and have a nice toothsome bite. What sets them apart from what you may envision them tasting like is the sauces. Hot, sweet, or in between - I love them all.
I am also a fan of the iced tea. It is more along the lines of a chai (without milk) than your standard Lipton fare.
I could go on and on, but I'll just leave it as one of those "you owe it to yourself to try this...
Read moreThis spot is hands down the best new restaurant in the RTP (and absolutely our new favorite). We drove out from Raleigh to try it because my husband is a big fan of Nepalese and Indian food and we were honestly blown away. In an area where fast food trends are the norm, this place is a breath of fresh air. The attention to detail at Nepal House, the cleanliness of the dining area, the friendliness of the service staff and their care with delivering us a tasty and super fresh meal made the experience so worth while. Also it’s family owned?! Love to support that! The chef clearly knows what he’s doing and we hope he continues to deliver this level of quality and love in his meals. The food wasn’t too greasy or sugary as most Indian restaurants in the area are and the flavors were balanced and just right. We devoured the chili momo which was homemade and felt like a dish straight out of your favorite family members kitchen. The mixed grill platter had a great variety of different types of chicken and shrimp and came with some yummy citrus infused vegetables on top which was a pleasant pairing. And the chicken chow mein (which we were fighting over) was simply a better made (and dare I say) healthier version of a classic comfort dish. Safe to say we left wanting more and will probably come back as soon as we can to try everything else on the menu. Thank...
Read moreI had a night out with myself tonight and started it with a new fund for me. The Nepal House. It's hard to believe I have missed this place just 1.5 miles from my house. I have been a fan of Indian and Nepalese food for 30+ years. I moved her 15 years ago, and have been disappointed in all but 2 places, which no longer exists.
My search is over.
The place is so unassuming. In a strip mall, but don't let that fool you. Plenty of parking, we'll lit, clean, renovated, and smells amazing right out of your car.
I was greated and seated right away by a kind young woman. Served my drinks and paused the menu. I chose the Chicken Kadhai and butter Naan. Standard test dishes for me.
The Kadhai had huge chunks for chicken, onions, peppers, and ginger with a spiced tomato sauce. I got it medium and if you like heat but not numbing, then this is the right choice. The sauce was deep with flavors and there was so much I only ate half. The rice was perfect. The Naan had the perfect chew to blistering with melted butter slathered all over it.
The best part was listening to Raj talk to his customers with so much kindness, remembering their names and dishes. Taking time to visit. Family run too.
Ill be back with my family many times to...
