This stings to write, but I have sworn by Pizzeria Veritas for 3 years now since I moved to the triangle in 2020. The average human would probably be disgusted by the amount of money I've spent on pizza here and the corresponding number of calories I've put into my body. I live east of downtown Raleigh and would drive 30-35 minutes to Cary because I have yet to find a pizza shop that could rival that of Pizzeria Veritas.
I had taken a pizza break since about May and decided last week it was time to pump my arteries with that Veritas goodness. I opened up my instagram and searched their account to get stoked for my large 18" cup and char pepperoni pizza and 6-12 garlic knots order that I would consume in one sitting. After I didn't see their username come up in my list of followers, I went to google to make sure the worst hadn't happened - the shop closing. I quickly found the website and saw the message that it was now under new ownership. After some additional searching and finding the old owner's newly named instagram account, I saw it was sold and they no longer were affiliated with the name or product. They were great, friendly people! I wish them nothing but success in their future endeavors!
As I mentioned, I live and die by this shop. I figured I owed it to the new owners to continue my business and really hoped everything would be exactly the same. Man, what a disappointment. The moment I opened up my bag containing my 6 garlic knots I could immediately tell the marinara was different. Gone was the glorious marinara sauce where every spice, tomato and pepper burst in your mouth like a flavor crystal of goodness. It was replaced by a bland, un-flavorful sauce that tasted like it came from a store-bought jar. The actual knots were different as well. Usually, those tasty little knots were soaked in garlic, olive oil and butter in the tin. The dough would melt in your mouth, your taste buds would sing, and the angels would cry. These new ones did have a similar appearance but seemed to have very little seasoning sprinkled on top and tasted almost like a Kings Hawaiian roll had been baked.
Regarding the pizza I was accustomed to, the description of 'elevated NY style pizza' could not have been more spot on. The spicy honey and a regular pizza with cup and char pepperoni were my favorites. Once I opened my pizza it wasn't too far off visually. There were significantly less toppings than usual, but the overall taste was off and very apparent from the first bite. It's pretty apparent the ingredients have been changed for everything and the end product suffers greatly. There's another review I saw from a few days ago where a picture of the current spicy honey pizza is posted and comparing to how it used to look with the old management is a travesty. Go through past reviews or the past owners instagram and the visual difference is very clear. Give them a call to place an order and your taste buds will confirm that change is not always for the better.
I can consume gross quantities of food. Veritas was my go-to cheat meal where the entire 18" pizza and 12 garlics knots will be gone in one sitting. If it didn't get eaten in one sitting, the rest would be consumed hours later. This was the first time in 3 years where I could only make myself get through 3 slices and 2 garlic knots before calling it quits. And wasting food is a massive pet peeve for me.
The old Veritas was always a 4.8 to 5/5. Second to none. This new management Veritas is a 2 to 2.5/5 at best.
My soul is crushed, but I guess all good things must...

Read moreDuring a recent trip to NC we ate here and I have to say, if it weren't so far away from my home I would be there at least once a week because they serve the best veggie sub I have ever had. I am a vegetarian (not vegan) and also the only vegetarian in my family so that means when we go out to eat, I usually order side dishes or the one vegetarian dish on the menu, because most places don't have extensive meatless options. I was prepared to order veggie pizza here, but was surprised to see that they had a veggie sub, and decided to try that. I was expecting the kind of veggie sub I had at Subway, which will keep you alive but isn't anything special, but thought maybe theirs would be better and have flavor, which subway's did not. Well they certainly had more flavor than Subway and they had more of everything else too. It was absolutely wonderful! Lots of times a sandwich that is only veggies and cheese just seems incomplete somehow, but this one was a perfect, fully balanced sandwich. I don't know how they made it so much better than most other places, and I didn't think to ask when we were there, but it was the best I've had. Next time we go to NC we are definitely coming back here and I am getting that veggie sub again. I am also going to get a veggie pizza to go,because I can't wait to see how theirs is. Most places serve a veggie pizza that seems like at afterthought, and if their veggie sub is any indication, I bet their veggie pizza will be just as addicting. My family really loved their food as well and the service was great with a friendly staff. The price was also very reasonable. The only downside of this place is that it is in NC, not in my small town in Alabama. Maybe open one down...
