We haven't be to Sakura for a long while. I picked it for my birthday supper. The atmosphere is unchanged, service was good, but was slow and did mess up on my spouse's order hence the three star rating on service. The food was good, not excellent. I have always gotten the filet for my steak as it is melt in your mouth tender. On this visit my steak was not tender, was chewy and had some fat in it. Don't know if it was Ribeye or just a bad filet, but not the normal quality of filet. The Chicken on this visit was also not tender as it usually is. The shrimp was excellent and spot on! The rice noodles were excellent! The fried rice my spouse thought was excellent, but mine was a little on the mushy and sticky side. The taste was there, but texture was off on the fried rice. We sat in a booth as we did not want to wait for a grill to fill up. The salads with ginger dressing and clear soup were excellent! Even though my food and service quality was a little off on my recent visit, I would still recommend Sakura in Cedar Falls, Iowa. It is a fun place for a family or group to sit at one of the hibachi grills and watch the performance of the talented chief.

I have to say, I love Sakura’s food, but I was extremely dissatisfied with my visit today. I decided to try a bento box and asked to add sushi and if I could do a crab roll for that, the waitress said yes. When I got the box I got a full sushi roll on the side and 4 pieces of Nigiri, which I didn’t think I had ordered since I had asked specifically for a crab roll . When I got the bill, I was up charged for the sushi and charged an extra $6 for the full roll. The waitress wasn’t helpful, when I spoke with the manager she kept putting the blame on me and saying I should’ve known that the crab roll wasn’t included, even though the waitress said it was ok. I asked for them to take the price of the crab roll off and they said again that it was my mistake. I communicated my frustration with how the situation was handled and there was still no effort to make it right on their part. I’ve never been to a restaurant where they wouldn’t be willing to fix a mistake and make it right with their customer. Can’t say that I’ll go back again any time soon.

We have noticed that the portion sizes, specifically the vegetables, have gotten significantly smaller over the years. We would rather you raise the price if you have to vs. skimping on the veggies but "shrinkflation" seems to be the way everyone is going. We notice. This used to be my favorite place but when a vegetarian doesn't get enough vegetables with her entree there is a problem. Update 2024: Portion sizes continue to dwindle. I order the same combo every time and over the last few years the # of shrimp declines every year. We're down to four or five shrimp on the plate. It used to be 7 or even 8 then 6 now 5. Pretty soon they'll just run a shrimp by the table and let me view it before taking it away. At least this time I got some zucchini and they get PISSED when you ask them for more zucchini. I have said I don't care what it costs and charge me extra if you have to but my wife is vegetarian and often (almost every time) gets little to no zucchini on her plate. Also notice no mushrooms.

Gone down hill. Did not enjoy our experience for our 8 year old's birthday yesterday. Don’t think we will be going again. Made a reservation the day before which they claimed they scheduled but wasn’t when we arrived. Waited 40 minutes for a table. Almost decided to leave when suddenly they could open up a table that they hadn’t planned to before. Waited another 20 minutes for the chef. Then my son had to use the restroom. (Restrooms are not the best by the way). The chef was suddenly there when we returned and had started without us. Guess what, my son missed the fire which was the reason we went there for his birthday. Oh sorry, I started without you the chef said. We had ordered drinks while waiting. Bar tender was clearly exhausted with her job. I had to ask her for our correct drinks twice. She was tossing menus on the counter making a loud bang. Chef was not thrilled. No usual flipping of the food or utensils while cooking. They said they would sing happy birthday to my son, but it never happened. For $125 it was not the birthday dinner we planned. It has turned in to just going and spending a lot of money for a meal and leaving.

Update: I don't know why we keep going here expecting different results. Service is terrible. They could care less whether you enjoy your meal or feel inclined to return. Cleanliness is a huge issue. Plates had some sort of crusty film on the bottom. The time before last I had a chewed up piece of bubble gum on the bottom of my salad bowl I was served. Portion sizes are severely cut down. I ordered two different cocktails and neither one of them had a drop of alcohol in them. The chef rushed to cook and served the food before it was even done. The couple next to us had to ask him to put their steak back on the grill. Then he proceded to argue with them about how they asked for their steak to be done. They also ordered a california roll that looked like they ran to Hy Vee quick and grabbed one of their to-go trays. The vegetables were barely cooked and too hard to eat. The rest of the meal had two squirts of sauce on it and slapped on the plate mostly dry. It was $125 for three people to eat. This is outrageous for the lack of service and quality in this place. I think I have learned my lesson after this time and will truly no longer...

After tonight i will never be returning to this location or the one in Waterloo (Tokyo owned by the same people)

Went in with a small group of 4. Right away was asked what we preferred for seating, and we asked for anything that came up first. Was told it was going to be a short 15-minute wait, no problem. Until at least 5-6 different size groups came in, waited less than the 5 minutes, and got seated! After being skipped multiple times, I got up to ask the woman what was going on and that the 15-minute wait turned into more than 30 minutes. All of a sudden, they found a table that was "empty this whole time". After being seated, our waiter did not greet us or anything, rudely put the menus on the table, asked what we wanted to drink, then came back and asked if we were ready to order. We processed to order, and as everyone handed the menus, someone in our group forgot to order something and asked that they can add to it. The waiter seemed frustrated and rolled his eyes and nodded his head. At this point, we just regretted even staying there! Once the food came out, we did not see him until it was time for the check! No refills on the drinks, no extra silverware other than the set of 2 that was already on the table, didn't bother to ask if we were okay or if we needed anything. I used to work in the restaurant industry and own multiple businesses. I get it they were somewhat busy and we did not mind waiting but being skipped is where I draw the line. I also understand that maybe the waiter might be going through some personal problems, having a very long day, or just tired. But your tip is earned not just given. We do not feel welcomed we did not feel wanted there and again we just regret even staying there. I would never let my employees act the way this man did or let them skip people who have been waiting before anyone else. We go by order. I usually tip more than I should with any waiter/waitress I get anywhere in a restaurant because as I mentioned I used to work in that industry and people live off mostly of tips. I do feel bad leaving only $5 but I don't think they felt bad for doing a half-ass job and being rude. We will not be back and I will never recommend this place to my family, friends,...

We were sat at a table with a half booth placed up against the entryway doors, every 30 seconds as folks came and left the two sets of doors would slam, shaking the wall we sat against a long with made loud boom each time too. Then we ordered two different sushi rolls both tempura or deep fried and clearly treated that to the waitress who was distracted by all the people standing around our table waiting to be seated in habachi area. It was uncomfortable having strangers jammed into the entry part where our dinner table was at, we went to bathroom and bumped into the people and their drinks on their table placed way too close to ours, then to top it off waitress brought out raw sushi we didn't order them replaced it 35 min later in which we were through with our main dinner. The steak and chicken dinner I got also had literally 4 small pieces of ribeye steak and normal amounts of chicken. For 25$ and extra cost for fried rice. For 2 adults and one child our bill was over 100$. She double charged us for the unfried roll then argued with us about it. The remade California tempura roll for the first time ever there, didn't taste good in any way. Even deep fried. Glad we didn't get any alcoholic drinks this time too. Very disappointed after being a customer of this restaurant and the old Tokyo too for so many years. Next time we will decide just to stick with Texas Roadhouse nextdoor. I don't plan on recommending anyone to this place nowadays anymore and I've got my full rediculous receipt and would like...
