Lightworks Cafe — Restaurant in Cedar Rapids

Consistency is a bit of an issue. I've had 5 star experiences and at other times, 2 star experiences. My first time having SMOKED VEGGIE HASH was my absolute favorite. Deliciously smokey, colorfully roasted and perfectly seasoned with a wide variety of vegetables. I longed to have it again. The second time I was let down. There was no hint of smokey goodness and a very sad medley of veg consisting of mostly unseasoned potatoes. I've had many TACOS here. The fillings should smack you in the face with flavor but all 4 kinds I've tried were unimpressive and tasteless. The BUFFALO CHICKEN SANDWICH has been good 2ce now. Lovely hot sauce pairs well with the pickles. The GRILLED CHEESE is also good. I'd personally prefer other cheeses besides the simple American cheese but the crusted parmesan on the outside of the sourdough makes all the difference. I've had the BLT 3 times now. The first time the flavor was great but bacon was too hard to chew and it needed more aioli. The second time I had enough aioli and the bacon was chewable but the bread was so hard it tore my mouth up eating it. The third time the bread was okay but I couldn't chew the bacon again. It's hit or miss. MISO BONITO CAULIFLOWER I've had once and I was definitely impressed with that umami flavor. I'll try that again. BEIGNETS were extremely dense and had no flavor to them except the powdered sugar. The bacon sugar was just chopped up bacon that fell right off and the dough itself seemed to have been missing salt. The FRENCH TOAST has been great! Nicely browned on the outside and soft in the center. Definitely better than others I've had at other restaurants. BISCUITS AND GRAVY I've had 2ce. The biscuits are nice and the gravy had all the right flavors present. They both just needed to be seasoned more aggressively. Hands down the best cafe in town. Everything is made from scratch and is so fresh. I always end up ordering several plates including a side of fruit because the meals are so delicious. Be prepared for a lunch rush around noon. We waited for over 30 minutes for our found and it was entirely worth it. The beignets are incredible - wear white so you don't show the powder sugar! I think about stopping in for something to go daily... But I probably go in about once every other week. I would go in more if I lived closer to downtown. Also it's an excellent place to go to before or after a visit to the library. Lightworks has lots of choices no matter your dietary...

Lightworks is LOVELY! The staff is incredibly friendly and easy-going, and they constantly have new and exciting specials to try. I literally can’t keep up with them. I don’t get to Cedar Rapids often, but I always stop here when I do. The coffee is great, and the food is just as delicious as it is beautiful.

The space is also very nice and clean. You can really tell that the people that work there actually care about their business on several different levels. Definitely recommend hanging out here or stopping in for something...
