This is clearly one of the best restaurants of Charlotte in my opinion that had been to so far. I can't get over how great the corn cakes were to start the meal and I can't stop thinking about them it was one of the best things I've ever had. When we first walked into the restaurant we agreed by the host who asked if we wanted to bar seating or to sit at a table. Unfortunately at the time we didn't know that the bar sitting kind of sucked and we would have preferred a table by a lot. The bar just didn't have a space to eat our dinner. Not sure why this is always a choice I'd rather them just ask if I wanted a table first and we could sit at the bar if we wanted to but it doesn't change the fact that the restaurant was great. We love the decor that they have which relates wooden boxes with some grass with a light coming out of them which were fantastic looking coming of them for lighting.
We sat down for dinner We ended up having the aforementioned corn cakes to start. I guess every meal comes with a cornbread which comes out from looks like a cast iron pan the only problem is the bottom was a little bit burnt again not a big deal but when you put butter on it it tasted fantastic. For dinner we got the chicken dumplings and we also got one of the po-boys. The fried shrimp was one of the best fried shrimps that I've ever had in my life on that po' boy. It's perfectly cooked perfectly moist and not chewy at all there was no bounce in the shrimp it was just everything that you expected out of the bite of a perfect shrimp. The chicken dumplings were extremely heavy served in a very viscous sauce. It's funny when my wife tasted the dumplings for the first time she said this is what a dumpling taste like because her mom used to always make the dumplings that come from a bag you know like the ones you buy pre-mix. She also thought it was pretty great The chicken was slightly overcooked but the flavors of the gravy just with the biscuits slash dumplings was amazing. Freezer we got the chest pie which is also wonderful the only thing that I'd say is I wish it came with a school of ice cream instead of just a little bit of whipped cream on top cuz they're just wasn't enough creaminess to get through the whole pie.
For drinks I'd say you want to skip the tequila mix drink that they have they put on Creole seasoning and it's just not good around the room of the glass I would have much prefer to traditional sugar. I have no I guess it's some Texas drink I don't know but don't...
Read moreFIRST IMPRESSIONS ARE IMPORTANT - but sometimes the second impression will ruin everything. I was sooooo excited about this place! From the outside it breathes the air of relaxed sophistication. It boasts “brunch all day” from an A-board standing outside.
When you walk in it’s clean, the host was friendly, inviting, whimsical - with hands down the BEST curled mustache I’ve seen. The decor mixed charm with an honored music era and I couldn’t WAIT to eat here.
Then our server Halo (his name) popped the entire bubble. I don’t know if he had a grudge against the owner or if he really does dislike the food here but his putting down of most of the food was a BIG turn off.
First when going over the appy’s I asked about the quail wings and he went to town: He said they were “small! I mean reallllly tiny!”, said they had a taste that was nothing like chicken and they have a “terrible” texture. He went on to say “I wouldn’t recommend them”. After I said, contrary to your recommendation, I want to try them anyway. he said OK and took our other appy order, which were the oysters. After he took the appetizer and drinks orders, he said the quail took really long time to cook is that OK? I said how long he said about 10-15 minutes. Of course we all know that’s not really long at all so I don’t know why he said that but I said yes please.
When time to order dinner my husband asked about the flounder. He said the flounder was the most tasteless dish on the menu and was really made for old people. He said everyone loves the catfish.
Then I asked about the chicken and dumplings and he said “ugh, I hope you like dill because everything has dill” he made this face of ludicrousness as he said “the chicken has dill, the sauce has dill the dumplins have dill… i mean I kind of like it but I’ve also had the worst chicken and dumplings on the planet so these are good haha”
I said to him, you know you make the food here seem like it tastes horrible. He said “well I’m not going to lie to you”
That was enough. We canceled our order, asked for the check and decided to eat somewhere else. He looked so satisfied when he brought the check.
On our way out I told the (manager? Owner?) Jessica what happened. She promised the food is great and service is usually equally great and asked us to give them another try.
We will....
