Deleting Original Review - added a photo of it in pictures. Very upset with this Japanese owned Sushi restaurant. I’m ashamed to even tell my friends who are good friends with the owners that this is now the second horrible experience I have had.

Food is always good, it’s the customer service and quality of their professionalism.

I will not be posting any of my photos.

This review is for my birthday lunch on 2/24 with my finance.

First of all it was not busy, we came between lunch and dinner to beat the rush. When I got in, I always need help with the park mobile app but this time they were not helping my friend they were helping me. Which sadly I had déjà vu, this has happened to me twice here. I ask for the step by step for park mobile to help with the coupon code so I DONT make any mistakes. I choose 3 hours bc I plan to take my time, it’s my birthday right ? - Well I have apply pay on my phone and if that’s an option it’s a simple click and there you go. Well it charges me over $30 to park. I said I thought you said it was free, oh you used apply pay didn’t you, the waiter/host said. I said well yea he goes ohh yea it should fall off. Fast Forward I am having to send pictures of my bank account after spending an hour on the phone with Park mobile bc it says online they didn’t charge me but they clearly did. They need to clearly have it stated by all staff and signs to not use Apple pay for park mobile. This is ridiculous.

Oh it gets better, I’m already in a bad mood let’s just add the host/waiter and hostess coming by my table one after the other repeatedly asking as I’m looking at the menu if I’m ready …. If you got to my picture of my previous review from last year this isn’t my first rodeo with being rushed. Let’s just say we were there in less than an hour and I spent $70 just on my plate of sushi… I rather just to Oku and pay over $100 for my plate.

Just got ahead and skip the local Japanese sushi restaurant- you will get treated with much more grace at Oku.

You have lost...

If I could rate this place a zero believe me I would! We came from Colorado with high hopes and recommendations to this spot. From the beginning when we got there they didn't say hello they just asked for how many, we said 6 , in spanish they all started speaking to eachother that there waa no table for six that we had to sit outside. Cool no problem they give us a table to sit right where the sun was hitting and I get sunburned quite easily. We had informed them that we had a baby and needed a booster seat, their response was they only had one and it was being used oh well. The server comes to our table doesn't say hi doesn't give us her name just looks at us and says how many of you are there and again after the third time repeated 6 with a baby! (Seriously) well we order our drinks that my kids Never got! We order our appetizers which were greasy, nothing great to boast and in tiny proportions. Our food comes in doesn't bother to give it to the right person that the dish was for and hands all the plates to my husband to do her effin job! At this point we have all ran out of water and never got refill. We proceed to eat our food! The one thing I cannot complain about was the sushi but my kids plates which were fried rice and chicken teriyaki were beyond disgusting! We ask for our receipt only to find out that after the most disgusting awful service we received there was a 20% gratuity charged (which is utter ridiculousness) Not because you automatically steal a tip from people gives you the right to give shi* service! My husband decides to speak to a Manager. Although in the end he took it off he became incredibly hostile with my husband and acted like a complete bafoon. The manager's name is Heriberto and he claims that it is law in the state of North Carolina that for 6 people you have to pay the 20%. There is just complete disregard for Customer Service in this establishment. I would not recommend this place to my worst enemy. F this place and...

First time I came here, great. Second time? So bad I had to delete my initial review to leave this one.

It was a busy Friday night and the restaurant was clearly drowning in the chaos of it. We weren't greeted by our server for twenty-five minutes after we sat. He couldn't speak a lick of English, so we had to point to everything we wanted to order, which was frustrating. You can't have people on the floor of a restaurant who's working with customers who can't speak English, I'm sorry.

We were sat at a booth near the front door. Our window was partially covered with plywood and bound by black electrical tape, not because the window was broken, but because this was the aestheticly unpleasing design choice of this restaurant, I guess. Because it was busy, they were literally setting up tables wherever they could fit one to accommodate people instead of going on a wait. They ended up putting a twelve top right in front of our booth that trapped us in. Whenever we needed to leave the table, to say go to the bathroom, the people at the other table had to get up and literally move their table against the wall on the opposite side for us to exit the booth. 100% a fire hazard!

As for the food it was just as horrendous. I ordered the Surf & Turf roll and the first time I got it, the meat was clearly seared as it was cooked on the outside and rare on the center when sliced. This time? They literally sliced the meat raw and cooked it while on the sushi roll with a butane torch. I'm assuming to speed up the cooking process. How do I know this? Because the rice on the roll was completely torched to a black charr and the roe ontop were burnt to a crisp as well. It was horrendously awful! I tried to send it back and get it taken off my bill because it was inedible, but because our server couldn't speak English/didn't understand me, I just lost patience, gave up, paid my bill and vowed never to return.

Evening was a...

A fair warning: When it comes to Japanese food, I am looking for a very specific dining experience, and thus, tend to be very harsh with my reviews. So take my opinions with a pound of salt. I walked in with very low expectations. This was not a place that I had wanted to visit, but a group of friends insisted that we eat here. Even with my healthy dose of skepticism, I still managed to be disappointed. My first impression began with the takoyaki. As soon as I grabbed the takoyaki, I knew I was not going to enjoy it. The outside was crispy, as opposed to freshly made takoyaki which is soft and tender as a pillow. I poked a small hole in the takoyaki hoping to see an enticing stream of steam and irresistible aromas waft out but there was nothing. I took a bite and it was crunchy on the outside and lukewarm on the inside. Definitely not what a takoyaki should be. I then tried the toro tartare and really enjoyed it. Both the toro and the chips were very savory. A very good dish, but not one that brings to mind the wonderful flavors of Japan. For the entrée, I ordered the Salmon Madness and the Una Don (eel on steamed rice). The Salmon Madness was pretty forgettable as it relied on the garnish and sauce to give it flavor. That's sad because good salmon can have some of the richest and most amazing flavors. The biggest letdown of the night was the eel dish. Eating good eel should be smooth and soft like velvet. Yet my experience was often interrupted by the small bones and it was very jarring to say the least. Not even the eel sauce, which tends to be finger lickin good, was impressive enough to redeem the dish. I walked out disappointed and unsatisfied. Not a place I would return to if I am craving Japanese food.

This was once my favorite sushi spot (as in a group of us regularly order there from skiptown a couple times a week) but the last interaction we had here was disappointing. They have recently implemented a 10% packaging fee on top of the total for all to go orders that the manager said “they are not telling customers about over the phone or online.” They gestures toward a 12pt font sheet of paper that was recently posted at the front door, not the pick up window that listed the new policy. The reasoning was because “Postmates and doordash charge them a fee so they wanted to compete”? We had originally tried to order with both of those apps which came out to be less expensive than the phone order. The apps add a .50 cent max on each item, not 10%. Additionally they do not allow app orders after a certain time at night despite their closing hour being 10:30 pm. The manager said there was nothing he could do about the fee because it was for the sushi chef and he is just following the rules. Basically moral of the story is order on an app or dine in so the extra 10% can go towards a nice tip for a server or delivery driver and not the owner. Also, be aware of this if you plan on tipping on top of your pickup order. Overall great sushi, disappointing customer service.
