I stopped here with my wife on a trip through town. We came at an off hour, not much going on. We had ordered previously from here with friends that live in the area and really enjoyed it. We ordered and paid for 2 sandwiches, no drink, no chips. It came to $38 after tip. When I sat down and started to eat my sandwhich I started to think about what I paid $38 for. My sandwich came on almost raw dough, it was sloppily put together and just all around bad. I asked if they could toast it when I ordered but was met with an abrupt no. Unwelcoming at best, but forget that, I couldn’t get past why it was $38. My wife went back and asked for a copy of the receipt. She was told they can’t do that and they were having trouble pulling it up. I own a small business and I know sometimes these things happen, so I wasn’t going to rake anyone over the coals for one bad experience especially mid afternoon between lunch and dinner. Today, after looking back at our receipt it turns out the person checking us out added a lemon bar and chips to the tab. We know this was the case because our card was refunded 30 mins after we ordered, exactly 1 minute after my wife inquired about the tab and the flustered worker offered no solution. We were stolen from, and then refunded when confronted, plain and simple. If this were my business, I would terminate the employee immediately. If the person checking us out at the register is the owner, shame on you. I gave a pass on the bad food and service, I won’t give a pass on someone stealing from my wife and I and lying about it. I won’t patron this...
Read moreThis was one of my favorite lunch spots when I lived in Cville20 years ago, and when I moved back last year I was delighted to discover that the sandwiches were just as good as I remember. Since the pandemic restrictions eased I've been stopping in there about once a week. Until two days ago.
I had been slammed at work all morning and into the afternoon, but I was able to slip in just 10 or 15 minutes before close to grab my usual. I got it back to my office and ate the first half, and when I picked up the second half I found underneath it tucked in the wrapping a wadded up pair of used latex gloves.
I've been trying to figure out a plausible way this could have happened by accident, but I'm at a loss. I think it must just be somebody's idea of a practical joke. Needless to say, the experience has killed my enthusiasm for the place.
On some level it's not fair to hold the shop responsible for the actions of just one person, so I won't say other people shouldn't go there, but if you do, consider opening your sandwich before you walk out the door and giving it a thorough inspection, at least until they identify the prankster in...
Read moreI saw this place last week when I was walking around one day after hours and thought to myself that I wanted to stop in sometime. Then a friend told me that he really liked it so that piqued my interest more.
When I got there a gentleman was talking people's order on his hand held PDA. Very quick and told me when I was ready he could take mine. My sandwich was ordered, paid for and done in less than five minutes.
I was given a paper bag with the two halves of the sandwich wrapped in paper and held closed with masking tape. Nice and friendly, I thought. I couldn't wait to get back to my makeshift hotel/office and opened it up right away at one of the counters where patrons can sit. Wow, this sandwich was good. Roast beef on rye with their secret sauce, and pickles. Also came with an extra side of sauce. Very tasty and worth trying. The sandwiches are ordered a la carte where toppings and cheese are extra. With pickles mine was $8.
I'll go back soon to try...
