Kuma is a quaint little spot for Korean and Japanese food. I think it’s the only place in Charlottesville where you can find takoyaki and okonomiyaki. The takoyaki and bibimbap were great, and from previous trips, we found the spicy seafood udon to be truly phenomenal. The okonomiyaki - while impressive in the number of seafoods in it (octopus, squid, scallop, mussel, shrimp) - was very strange. Instead of cabbage, it had onions, carrots, and bean sprouts. The batter lacked seasoning like bonito stock and ginger, and seemed to lean instead on the toppings (okonomi, mayo, bonito flakes) and the seafoods. Still, it was great for the value, the restaurant itself is charming and unassuming, and the staff were very friendly and fun. Happy to try out their broader menu soon.

Had the takoyaki, miso ramen bowl, and lunch “special” bento tray. The takoyaki was delicious, but everything else was surprisingly bland. The miso ramen had no flavor and both the pork and egg were way over cooked. I didn’t even order the tonkatsu tray, I ordered spicy pork, but I try not to send things back, even though this lunch special was $18. The gyoza had hardly any filling and was again bland, California roll was meh, and the edamame wasn’t even salted. Somehow even the sauce and wasabi tasted watered down. On top of the food, the table was filthy, and my wife’s water cup had dirty bits floating in it. This place was much better 8 years ago, I won’t be returning unfortunately.

5 stars for college kids -- 4 stars for everyone else. The okonomiyaki appetizer is massive! Definitely split between two or more people. The okonomiyaki was good, but had an excessive amount of seafood (octopus, crab, mussels). Beware the parking garage across the street from the restaurant! It is an overpriced and dilapidated car park, at $3/hour.

Ramen is kinda bland. Asking for pepper and was told additional charge required.

*Below is the updated review: We walked in and no one was at the front desk so we sat ourselves down at the table that’s by the entrance. The waitress showed up 10 mins later and made us feel like we did something wrong. She gave a lecture that we should ring the door bell. And she moved us to another greasy sticky table in the back of the restaurant. The whole time she had this bad attitude when we ordered, when we asked questions about their menu. I guess she didn’t enjoy working there and probably had a bad day or two.

Ramen was mediocre. Salmon roll was at room temperature, sushi rice was dried out and tasted like last nights left over. gross.

And then this response to my initial review that tells me to head elsewhere is downright disrespectful. Then you had the audacity to ask for 20% service fee? You deserve none.

I Will reach out to my bank and charge back. You were right. Not the right place, and you pissed the wrong person. Your poor handling of raw seafood is being reported. The VA Health department will be in touch with you regarding the following: Cross-contamination. Food temperature. Poor personal hygiene. Improper storage of food. Inadequate kitchen sanitation.

Time to pick...

Food was tasty so I gave one star. Place was clean so I gave another star. Other than that, they don't deserve any more stars. My friend and I were there for more than one hour. Not once did they smile at us or other customers, always frowning or looking uninterested in providing service. Ordered spicy seafood udon soup. It was flavourful but seafood included was pathetic and very very small in size ... there was only one medium size shrimp, two small squid rings, two small pieces of octopus tentacles and three small pieces of mussels with a very generous amount of cabbage and onions đŸ€ŠđŸ˜‚ That one dish cost me almost $20 after tax and tip! As much as I want to support Small Business owners and neighborhood restaurants like this one, I WILL NOT be back because I could have gone to Panda Express for cheaper food and most importantly...
