I moved to Cheyenne two years ago and have only just discovered this wonderful restaurant. I decided to treat my daughter to lunch. We've only had Japanese curry so I assumed the experience would be similar. It was not. The Indian curry dishes we ordered far surpassed the experiences we've had elsewhere.
My interest was piqued by the many positive reviews I had read prior to coming here.
We started with a Mango Lassi --and I highly recommend it. It was described to us as mango puree mixed with yogurt. It was so creamy and delicious. It definitely set the tone for what promised to be an exceptional meal. We weren't too sure if we were being ambitious in requesting medium heat level but we went with that anyway. We were not disappointed!
For our main course, we both opted for the coconut curry with lamb. When our lunch arrived, it was on a silver platter and the curry itself was in a small sterling silver serving dish. The lamb was tender and perfectly cooked, enveloped in a rich, flavorful coconut curry sauce that was simply irresistible. Medium heat was perfect as it provided a satisfying kick without being overpowering. The dish came with a fried 'fritter' that tasted like sweet potato hash browns...maybe I'm wrong on what it was but it too was so darn good! We had garlic naan bread which we used to soak up as much of the curry as possible. Half way through we were both pleasantly full.
One of the highlights was the sweet white sauce that accompanied the meal. I am assuming that it was coconut milk based and had small grapes in it ---it was just delightful.
The service was speedy and efficient, and the establishment itself was well-kept and inviting. The staff were attentive and made sure we had everything we needed for an enjoyable dining experience.
Overall, Durbar is a hidden gem offering a unique culinary experience in a city that has far too much American junk/fast-food. We cannot wait to return to explore more of their menu. Highly recommend for anyone looking to savor authentic Indian cuisine...
Read moreSynopsis: food amazing, service freakishly bad. First of all, the food is great which is not something I’ll often say about anywhere in Cheyenne. Some of the best Korma I’ve had. We had a rare kid free date night and decided to finally try the Indian in Cheyenne instead of driving to Fort Collins.
The service was so weird and surreal. I’m not sure what the two young workers do, but they most certainly did not want to interact with us AT ALL. The girl did not look at us not one single time. Legit the first thing I whispered to my husband after we got there was, “did I offend her?” Like it was WEIRD. The owner was very nice when taking our order, but from that point on through the rest of the meal NO ONE CHECKED ON US ONCE. Not once. Empty water, how’s the food, etc. nothing. I did actually literally flag down the boy and ask him for some hot sauce, which he was super confused about whether they had any or not. Finally after our entire unchecked, lonely meal the boy silently plopped down our check and walked away. No one had filled our water. No one had asked how our meal was. No one asked if we wanted dessert. I mean honestly I was kind of weirded out by the sheer level of neglect. I said, “we’re not done” as I had been planning to order appetizers to take home and desserts, but still…..no one asked. He just apologized and took away the check and some plates. Eventually I was able to get the owner over and just asked, “do you have kheer?” only because I desperately wanted it. I did not ever get offered any other desserts or told what they had, and I didn’t feel welcome or comfortable in any way so I just got my kheer and that’s it. Eventually the girl silently plopped down the second check and quickly walked away, not looking at us or acknowledging our presence at all.
Maybe we should have gotten take out cause the food was delicious, but I’m super bummed by the experience. There’s so many things I want to try there now that I know yummy Indian is an arms length away, but I’m a bit turned off...
Read moreI was super excited to find out that an Indian place was opening in Cheyenne so it was heartbreaking how underwhelming the experience turned out to be. I understand that they are the only Indian place in town, but I come from a much bigger city where the indian food is a 1000% better and is a lot less expensive.
If I'm going to pay $18/$20 for an entree I'm hoping for a couple of things; amazing ambiance, an awesome location, or stellar food. (Or ideally all three.) This place is in the most run-down strip mall in town, and the out-of-town friend that I brought was a little sketched out by the state of the parking lot; the restaurant is really bare and lacking in any kind of personality; the food was just ok and the portions were pretty disappointing. I asked that the food be mild and it was pretty spicy. Also the wait was really really long (40 minutes) and the place only had four tables with guests. They tried to tell us that they could get us our food in 20 minutes if we agreed to stay and eat at a table. It is VERY strange business to tell a customer that their money isn't as good because they want to take their food home, especially in a time where restaurants and bars have been the main cause of the spread of Covid.
I'm giving them a couple of more stars than I otherwise might have because they are new. I will probably check back later in the year and see if they have ironed out the kinks. They need to realize that they are not in a ski resort town or a suburb of Denver if they...
