In reponse to the owner's comments to my review. I do not one bit regret leaving a one star review. For those that read reviews, here's the breakdown if you plan to visit this restaurant. You must email the owner if you have a problem with his establishment. We all have this information readily available. 👍 If you have allergies, you need to sit in the lounge. You cannot enjoy the show like everyone else. Expect to have your food arrive well after other parties have eaten and left and don't complain when your server gives you 5 minutes to eat and then hurries you out of the facility. Also, you MUST ask to have the member that is having a birthday at the restaurant be sung to....you cannot simply say that they are having a birthday. If you are in a large party where gratuity is automatically added, you are golden. If you are in a party of 5 or less, expect to get stomped on. For the Gluten free/ Celiac community, I highly recommend that you seek elsewhere. Cafe Mekong in Blacksburg is an excellent restaurant in which the owners are kind and greatly appreciate your business. They will make things right if there is an issue.
My family and I have visited here on numerous occasions to celebrate birthdays and other events. Tonight we had a less than stellar experience. I don't like leaving negative reviews for small businesses but feel that this is justified. Firstly, when we first arrived, we had to wait 15 minutes after our reservation time only because the large party that we were seated with was late. Could we not have been seated with another party and not have been forced to wait? Secondly, my family is gluten free so we had to have our meals prepared in the back. I appreciate that they are cautious and prepare the food separately to avoid cross-contamination. However, when the chef arrived at our table, he asked us why we did not order. "Did we order sushi or something?" was his question to us. It should have been communicated to him of the situation. It is hard enough being a family with allergies than to have it rubbed in our face that we are different from others. Thirdly, we received our meals when the other party was almost finished with theirs. It was not fun watching the other party eat their food while we patiently waited for our meals to arrive. It made it even worse when the server came out just a few minutes after our food arrived to ask us if we needed boxes to hurry us out of there!!! We literally were given just a few minutes to eat our food!!! For over $20 a plate and waiting over an hour for our food, shouldn't we be allowed to enjoy our meal without being hurried along? Lastly, we were there for our young daughter's birthday. We relayed this information to our server beforehand. Well, the large party that we were seated with was also celebrating a birthday. Guess what? The birthday person with the other party was sung to while my daughter was completely ignored. I asked the server if they could come back to sing happy birthday to my daughter and she told me that I would have had to tell them ahead of time. What? Why? My daughter chose to visit Kabuki for this very reason. Her heart was crushed. I should have pushed the matter more but by this point, I just wanted to wipe my hands of this facility In finale, this was our family's last visit to Kabuki. We were very poorly treated at this visit and would prefer to spend our money where we are treated better. I believe the owner cares about his customers and the community but we did not experience this tonight. I would not recommend eating here if you are gluten free or suffer from other dietary restrictions unless you are ok with watching others eat their food while you wait for yours to arrive. It isn't enjoyable...
Read moreMy husband and I decided to eat at Kabuki 's this evening, November 10th, to celebrate our 45th Wedding Anniversary...we both enjoyj sushi, the reason we went there...well, we haven't been there for awhile and to our dismay, it was the worst dining experience of our lives! We are loyal and have had sushi all over the country...we know it, how to order it, etc. we are great fans of it, yet, for the first time in our lives, we left 3/4's of it, no one leaves sushi, usually there's not even ginger left on a plate! My husband ordered his favorite eel kind, it was slmey, now, yes, eels' skin is slimy, but not the meat! For those of you who like eel, you would have been so turned off. Everything we ordered was a disaster...also, their menu states 'crabmeat sticks' and lists 'crabmeat: too, giving you the idea they're using both...bot so, when we asked our server, she knew nothing about sushi, she had to ask the guy, the 'sushi chef (supposedly) and he answered us, that they use 'crab sticks' only, yet their menu states 'crab.'. This is false advertising! And if you're knowledgeable regarding sushi, real crab is used! The few types we ordered were to have shrimp, too! If you saw the size of what they're advertising as 'shrimp:, you got a 3/4 inch size if you were lucky. Sushi is to be quite tasty, all we could taste was rice! They surrounded each piece with so much, too much rice, it was awful...plus, they automatically add a 20 percent gratituity fee, which we would not have done for the inedible sushi they actually had the nerve to serve us. It was disgusting ...we felt so bad, it ruined our wonderful achievement of 45 years of marriage! They have no pride by serving such miserable sushi. The sad thing is: they saw how much of their sushi we left on our plate...trust me, no one leaves sushi behind like tonight, because it's usually so delicious, there's nothing left on our plates and it's a costly treat you're willing to pay for, when and if it's so delicious! Our bill was over $100.00, for rice and nothing was fresh tasting! Again, it was the worst sushi we've ever had in all my 68 years...if you like a large plate of only rice, and artificial crabmeat, then go there...I am amazed, at the high prices they are charging for inferior sushi...we sre going to warn all of our fellow sushi-lovers, to go elsewhere! It sickens me and truly bothers me that we wasted our hard earned money on their terrible, what they're calling 'sushi!'. They knew they ripped us off, because when we left, none of the staff could look us in the eye. It did put a damper on our Anniversary! I'd like to get my $ back for. itterally, the garbage they served us! Never going back and spreading the word to many how disgusting it was,to be served such horrible food! If you're a 'sushi-lover', beware of this...
Read moreI've dined at this restaurant for 12 years as my 3 kids attended college at VT and Radford and I have never had a terrible experience like last Saturday night. It was a birthday event and a party of 7. I made reservations and we were on time. We were seated in a prompt fashion and our waitress was very cordial and efficient with our drinks, soup and salad. That's when it all went wrong. From the time we finished our salad to the time our chef appeared, over an hour passed by! We had a apologetic visit from our waitress during that time saying that they were short on cooks and someone would be right out with our order. I think that it was close to the 45 minute point with some guy appeared at our table with an ill-fitting black and gold jacket and an imitation Fonz haircut. He never identified himself but I assumed he was the manager. He told me he was sorry that we were waiting so long, mumbled something about a new head chef and then told me he couldn't do anything about our situation except give us some free appetizers because he had just learned about our wait. I guess it was my fault that I didn't complain. Maybe his policy is to complain to get service??? 15 minutes later he returned again and I asked for my check so we could leave. He made some comments about band aids for the problem, etc. Just as we were about to get up a chef appeared, maybe the head chef, and without much fanfare he had our meal ready in 10 minutes. We waited another 10 minutes after dinner to get our check. Were they wondering how to handle the situation? Finally a lady in a Kimono appears with our checks, identified herself as the manager and gave us cards offering us 10% off our next visit. I wonder who will use those discounts....not me. By the way, the appetizers appears half way through the meal and the Fonz, or Elvis?....he must have left the building. He wasn't around to say goodnight. This was a really terrible experience for my daughter's 19th birthday family...
