Updated review (December 2023) - 2/5:
Dinner service is back... but, it's complicated. Only on Friday and Saturday nights. The menu is only about 5 main dishes. A simple fish & chips is now shockingly $26... there are several other places in OTR and NKY that do a really great fish & chips for $10–15 tops. I went with a group of 4 tonight and all everyone could notice is how much they have cranked up the dinner prices vs historical. Remember the half bird fried chicken special for $15? I do! Now 1/4 bird korean fried chicken is over $20... it's good but just, what has happened to the prices at Goose? It's like they have forgotten and completely alienated their core local demographic...
Every single person in my party said "fish & chips sounds good… but for $26?!!! that's absolutely INSANE!". Fortunately or unfortunately, I think the new Goose & Elder GM needs to hear this feedback on the new dinner menu... the new dinner prices are just WAY WAY too high. And from this, I'm not surprised at all that dinner service was half empty at peak time. I was so excited to see Goose bring back dinner, but hawking a simple normal-sized plate of fish & chips for $26 is... absolutely not the way.
I've been a longtime Salazar restaurants customer for nearly a decade. But frankly, I don't know if I'll try the new dinner at Goose service again. The prices here historically have been a deal, now they have overcorrected in the opposite direction and gone way too high on most dishes. I mean, $19 for a double bacon cheeseburger (no fries even, that's another +$8 or $9 !!!) to give another example. If this is the new dinner service at Goose, I'd rather see a new restaurant take its place... a simple cocktail, main, (small) dessert check here is now $50... I just think that's excessive for what this place used to be, even just two years ago. I miss the old Goose & Elder. Now the food is the same yet the prices are essentially double... what a bummer.
They had a few nice bourbons tonight as well, but $50 for a pour of Weller CYPB? Come on guys, there are nearby bars within a 10 minute drive selling this same pour for under $25... The entire bottle (12 full pours) retail is only $56 from OHLQ. I truly do not understand all of the sudden price gouging going on here now. It makes me so sad compared to what Goose was. It rubs me the wrong way when a restaurant tries to crank their prices up to the max possible over providing a good value to customers, but that's what this new dinner service feels like right now. I just hope they correct it before my experience here becomes the new normal.
Previous review (Early 2023) - 5/5:
Goose & Elder is one of those "what's not to love?" kinda places.
My personal favorite is the brunch menu, especially the avocado toast (+ egg), or the pancakes. That said, their lunch & dinner menus are fun as well, and always something a little different.
Cocktails are fun / creative / ever-changing / excellent as well (as you might expect of a Jose Salazar restaurant).
The bar will occasionally have rare bourbons and barrel picks, so stop by and take a peek for possible hidden gems. I've found New Riff single barrel picks there multiple times, and George T. Stagg / Buffalo Trace Antique Collection bourbon every once in a while.
This is one of the few places around Findlay that is open at night and has really great hours all around. They also will do takeout conveniently at anytime, which is not true of everywhere in OTR.
I can't think of anything I'd change about Goose & Elder. Truly a hidden gem of OTR. If they happen to be on a long wait when you visit, try Salazar just a short walk away. Both are highly recommended and some of the best...
Read moreWent for Sunday Brunch. Sunday's they are only open until 3pm and only serve a limited menu. However I was pleasantly surprised to find the chef working throughout the restaurant from greeting people to serving food to expediting the kitchen.
Would definitely recommend making a reservation as it was very very busy at 12:30pm. Our server was friendly but inattentive. It took about 10 minutes to get their attention and they only came by to take my order and bring my check.
The wait for our food took about thirty minutes which wasn't ideal. I flagged down my server who I asked if they knew how long until our food arrived. They simply replied no and quickly walked away. They didn't offer to check on the status of my food nor were they the one to bring me my food.
Service aside, the food was well worth the wait and saved the experience. I had the Goetta Hash. It was AMAZING. For under $15 I received a decadent, indulgent, and rich meal. Words do not do it justice.
I will be back for brunch and more. While waiting, I got a good look at other diners' meals and everything looked delicious. Only reason for the four stars is the wait and...
Read moreVisiting from out of town and stopped in on Monday morning. We started with the honey & ricotta toast which was a wonderful paring of flavors. The strawberries were juicy and fresh, the carrots were roasted leaving just the right amount of texture, the crumbled pistachios layered on the honey ricotta spread over the the multigrain bread added a soft texture. It was easy to eat every bite. For our entrees we had the Royal Goose burger and added the egg and black pepper bacon and the Duck Leg Confit. The burger was juicy and packed full of flavor, I actually loved every component of the burger, the bun, egg, bacon, cheese and dijonaise were all so delicious together. We were most excited to order the duck and they did not dissapoint. The duck skin was crisp and packed full flavor and the meat was tender a flavorful as well! It was served over a bed of grits, with bacon, and greens. We were sad we missed brunch as it's only available Saturday's and Sunday's, but so pleased with the regular menu. I highly recommend and we will definitely be back for brunch on...
