Having been to numerous Japanese restaurants, I was eager to try Mikado. However, my experience was a mixed bag.
Korean Beef Bibimbap: The dish served to us was quite unconventional. Typically, bibimbap consists of a bowl of warm white rice topped with sautéed and seasoned vegetables, chili pepper paste, soy sauce, and usually sliced beef (among other ingredients). The beef is traditionally thinly sliced, but at this establishment, it was served in thick dry strips. What was more perplexing was the sauce; it was unlike anything I've tasted in a bibimbap before. While I'm open to innovative takes on classic dishes, this interpretation was a bit too far off the mark for my liking.
Chicken Katsudon: This was another "surprising" dish. Katsudon is a popular Japanese food made from a breaded deep-fried chicken cutlet served over rice and covered with a flavorful broth. Here, however, the dish felt like an imitation, and it was quite dry (It felt I ordered chicken nuggets). Compared to other Japanese restaurants I have been, this one and their servings lacked the authenticity and depth of flavor that one would expect from an authentic Japanese restaurant. To add insult to injury, the miso soup was extra salty. Miso gentle salty flavor should come from the sea weed. Did they add salt to it? It might be, since, and it was totally inedible. Unfortunately, Both dishes were a poor imitation of what you might expect from a Japanese restaurant.
In conclusion, while I appreciate restaurants trying new twists on traditional dishes, there's a delicate balance between innovation and maintaining the essence of the original. Unfortunately, in this case, Mikado seemed to miss the mark. I hope to see improvements in the future, as the potential is...
Read moreBasically I ordered an 18 dollar roll of sushi that was described as lobster tempura and asparagus on the inside and spicy crab and crispy onion on the out side. I believe the menu actually describe it by stating in lobster tempura out etc. it was supposed to be 10 sushi sized sushi pieces. I eat allot of sushi from nyc to our local and incredibly superior Arroy Dee sushi. When you use in and out to describe sushi it’s pretty self explanatory and winds up usually being an amazing sushi volcano of yum. I got an 18 dollar 8 piece of T. rex bite sized sushi’s that had everything in. Not only did it have everything in! My crispy onion was crispy raw red onion what in the sushi monstrosity is this? Crispy onion and sushi is now and has also meant fried crispy onion just like it did the first time I had Larry the lobster roll. The service was adequate despite the fact the mat my server correctly expedited that this roll was not right, not sushi and not worth 18 dollars. I am assuming he knew the spicy crab mix should have been dolloped on top with crispy fried onion sprinkled over and though I’d be none the wiser. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. That or Larry the lobster roll got an inedible makeover. Overall next time I want a late lunch and sushi is on the mind I will be not thinking twice Arroy Dee on Sanford puts mikados pretty space to shame. The stars they got are for literally providing food and filling drinks. Sorry guys but I know first hand time and time again you do so so so...
Read moreWent here for lunch, got the Sushi Lunch Box. Very disappointed with the quality here given the great reviews. I received 5 pieces of sushi that were all clearly frozen for too long and sub-par quality: white tuna and tuna were such a watery, broken-down fish texture that I had to spit them both out. One of the pieces was so broken down from freezer burn that both my father and I couldn't determine what kind of fish it was. The salmon had a massive fat cap left on it- little of it was actually meat. All in all, incredibly disappointed and I had to go elsewhere to actually fill my stomach.
I've been to dozens of sushi places over the years, from Tokyo to smaller hole-in-the-walls in the US, and this is probably the worst quality I've ever seen. It's frankly unacceptable that quality of fish was served to customers.
Adding a star only because the bulgogi lunch box my dad had tasted good.
Overall, this place may be good for its cooked food, but the sushi quality is so questionable I would never recommend anyone to go...
