My family heard good reviews about this place and decided to check it out. None of us have ever tried Thai food before, so we did a little internet research before we went. We let our lovely server, Amy, know that we were new to Thai food, and that we were ordering several dishes that we could all try. Amy, and Dennis, one of the owners, were beyond accommodating. Even though the small restaurant was extremely busy on this Saturday afternoon, the service did not suffer. We tried spring rolls, the pork fried wonton, the Pad Thai with shrimp, the yellow curry with mixed seafood, the cashew chicken, and the Thai fried rice with chicken and pork. We also ordered the Thai coffee tea to try, and we brought home a green tea cheese cake to try after we take a break from all the delicious food. Dennis took the time to tell us about the history of the restaurant, his wife, who is not only culinary trained but also a native of Thailand, and the history of cooking in their family. He shared some Thai candy with us and made us feel truly welcome. I don't really expect a fresh cultural experience in Northern Michigan, and it was a lovely surprise. The food was obviously very fresh, presented beautifully, full of delicious flavor, and we all found out that we love Thai food! My taste buds are still having a party. Highly...
Read moreThe BEST cashew tofu I have ever had (16 years as vegetarian, 7 as vegan).
Having lived in Chicago for ten years and Boston for 5, we have enjoyed wonderful Thai food over the years. Somehow Ruk Thai, on a trip from Traverse City to Detroit, served us the absolute best cashew tofu dish.
The sauce is what made it. It was perfect. A bit sweet but spicy hot and flavorful. Medium spice was perfect for someone who loves chili oil and spice but cannot handle ghost peppers. The tofu was fried perfectly. Very nice veggies and white rice. Typical portions in rectangular plastic to go container.
Group also enjoyed Chicken Pad Thai, Fried Tofu appetizer and Basil Tofu.
The restaurant and their bathroom were spotless and all of the staff was attentive and working very hard on a packed Friday evening.
We called ahead and were given our takeout in a reasonable amount of time. We ate in the parking lot before heading South.
If you are headed through Clare and vegetarian or vegan stop by Ruk Thai.
You won't be disappointed. Can't wait to go back.

Read moreMy family frequents Thai Restaurants from around the Detroit Metro area and have been in search of a good Thai food establishment north of M46. After reading the reviews left for Ruk Thai we decided to give it a try. We ordered several different dishes in hopes of finding one that would hold up to the Metro Detroit area standard. Sadly the reviews did not match the food. Quite frankly, the food was disgusting. Not one dish was finished and most of it was tossed out. The Pad Ped was the biggest disappointment. Not only was there no eggplant, but it was not made with curry, instead it was made with the restaurant's so called "house sauce" that I can only describe as tasting as if it would be used to clean and seal a hardwood floor. Their brown sauce was not much better. The Pad Thai was by consensus the best of the dishes, but that was not saying much. I can only assume the high ratings here have only been posted by people that enjoy Chinese Food, or done by employees. No way this is a 4.9 star based on food taste and quality. Sadly, we are still in search of that quality Thai Restaurant in the northern lower peninsula...
