This place has a great visual set up which is why we walked in during our evening walk through here about 8ish or so. When we walked in a very nice friendly young lady greeted us and asked if we wanted to try any flavors to let her know. We ended up getting another young lady with a short red pixie hair cut.

It was our very first time here and we wanted ice cream but were not familiar with the flavors which was the first thing I said we needed a minute but my boyfriend was excited to see all the flavors some seemed original but we obviously did not want to pick the wrong thing. He proceeded to ask to taste the non diary rocky road (not labeled) because of the visual presentation he just pointed to it he was clearly not lactose intolerant and he didn't know what else to get so he asked for a shake made with that flavored ice cream. The employee (pixie cut/red hair)who was helping us proceeded to tell him that him choosing that flavor defeated the purpose of a non diary ice cream in a very rude manner and I could see how it made him feel like he had done something wrong so he ended up picking another flavor and offered no suggestions or hey it's okay we can make this just wanted to make sure it's okay blah blah blah.

Next we ordered an ice cream sampler because we wanted to really get a taste for this place and again this employee proceeded to rush us to pick flavors which we obviously had no clue did not offer suggestions or to give us a minute just stared and kept asking what else what else. We didn't even think of asking for a sample of something because of her demeanor towards us. Im not crazy about ice cream like my boyfriend is so he was picking stuff I didn't care what ice cream he got but I couldn't stand what I was seeing/hearing how uncomfortable she made him feel I had to help him slow down because I could tell the way she was asking us okay what flavor next in a very rushed manner was affecting how he was going about choosing a flavor just picking the first thing he looked at. There was only a few customers in there they were not super busy so I didn't understand her attitude when I saw how friendly her co worker was with the other customers taking there time tasting samples.

When we left I realized on our walk back home how uncomfortable the employee mentioned above made us feel and although we saw other stuff we wanted to try we probably will not be back. The Ice cream was decent so was my boyfriends banana chocolate shake but the vanilla shake I ordered had barely a hint of vanilla tasted more like milk to me and I am not picky I still drank it but it was not worth $6.45 I believe it was. Maybe she was in a hurry to close I don’t know but we are potential customers that live close by and my boyfriend would of kept going there for ice cream but I don’t think he feels like going back with how uncomfortable he felt.

I hope this employee either learns some customer service skills and doesn't ruin any other customers experiences because she obviously has no vested interest in a business someone else...

UPDATE: AUG 2025

Unfortunately, I can no longer recommend this establishment. They apparently have a "No sample" policy now because they get "really busy." I understand the establishment is near a college. But I live in the Bay Area - and there are PLENTY of ice cream shops that get busy at ALL hours that still provide samples. And happily! When I came in, there was a handful of people. While the employee was apologetic, I made it calmly clear that I would not come back. This establishment didn't use to be this way, and it's sad. Just because you're the only "good" ice cream shop in a five mile radius doesn't mean you can turn your back on the community that brought you up since the mid 2000s.

As I could not sample, I did not buy any ice cream this time around, and can no longer attest to the quality of their product. Two stars, because I do have memories of better days at Bert and Rockys.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:

I cannot stress my love for this ice cream parlor enough - they have a superb selection, and all their cheesecake-based ice cream is just marvelously scrumptious! Their green tea ice cream wasn't anything to brag about though - I would stick to more traditional flavors with this place. But they know how to do those flavors RIGHT, and that's what matters. Plus the service is wonderful, and the cashiers are very kind. Oh, and their chocolate covered...

First time trying this place out and my experience wasn’t all that great…..We ordered a candy apple with chocolate, marshmallows, almonds and the marshmallows were so stale!!!! We told one of the workers’ our situation and if we can trade it for a plain simple one (which is worth less than what I paid but I didn’t mind) and she flat out told my friend ā€œNoā€ so I went in another time asked a different person if we can trade it and if she wanted she could taste it as well so she can see I wasn’t lying, needless to say her manager wasn’t available I told her ā€œlook I just wanted the a plain caramel oneā€ she went over cut it up and then tried to charge me for it (even though she had already took mine frm me). I proceeded to tell her ā€œno thank youā€ she can keep both of them as it was I already had paid more than what it was worth with the other one at this point she feels bad and ends up swapping me the simple one……and well taste wise the caramel wasn’t it for me but on the bright side the brownies were...

We were craving authentic, gourmet, creamy ice cream, not the typical stuff you find everywhere but more elaborate, rich tasting ice cream and I'm glad we found this place after enjoying a delicious lunch across the street from this place. I had their cappuccino ice cream which is a combination of mocha, coffee and cinnamon... absolute hit for a coffee/cinnamon lover! My son had their blueberry lavender and sweet cream ice cream, delicious! They hit the spot. I didn't take pictures of our ice cream as we were so excited to eat it but definitely good quality ice cream and authentic flavors. When you walk into the parlor, you're greeted by a big variety of candies, chocolates and crafted desserts. I can't wait to go back for some more ice cream and some sweet treats. Definitely not the place to keep track of calories or carbs šŸ˜… but the right place to give yourself some sweet self love.

I did scream for ice cream so I walked over from Union... Friendly lady with a contagious smile, making candy at the front on the shop, welcomed us in... Walls of candy... cases of homemade chocolates... and the sweet aroma of waffle cones, almost Disneyland/Main St-like! A few unique flavors, like the rose/lychee one I tried. And good versions of the traditional ones like chocolate almond, which I also had. ;) Not the best ice cream I've had, but still soooo yummy! Less than $3 for a cone filled to the top & beyond!!!! Indulge your sweet tooth with this sweet little shop!
