It is RARE that I ever discourage others from supporting a small town business, but do NOT eat at Nancy Jo’s Homemade in Clayton. If you have kids, they are NOT welcome there!
After spending our money and eating lunch at Nancy Jo’s, we decided to order ice cream. When we approached David to do so, he told us we had to sit outside because we were “terribly too loud inside” and they wanted their customers to enjoy their lunch. My friend and I were in shock that this was said to us, because our kids were just being kids. We found this treatment RUDE, unfair, and dismissive—especially since we are long-time loyal customers.
We had our kids there (ages 2, 3, and 5), all acting like kids—nothing out of the ordinary. Despite that, we were basically told to leave, with the comment, “We will serve you, but y’all have to sit outside,” without any proper explanation or courtesy. We were so upset that we left immediately and went somewhere kids are welcome (Burney’s, thank you!).
Later, I went back inside to address the issue with David. His response was, “Sorry you felt that way,” but he did not apologize for how we were treated or for dismissing loyal customers like us. That lack of a genuine apology only added to our disappointment.
I will not be spending another dime at Nancy Jo’s, and I will be sharing this experience to warn others. I’ve never been treated like this in all my years as a customer, and it’s deeply disappointing...

I was watching for the next person to get up so I could grab a seat to sit while my kiddos were in line to get their face painted. An Asian family was sitting for about 30mins in front of Nancy Jo and the side of the shop was filled with random people. As soon as the Asian family left me and my one neice grabbed the twio chairs to rest. Within 15mins this older white woman comes out to tell us we have to move because we didn't by anything from Nancy Jo's. So we get up. I begin to walk to the side of the shop where others are sitting. The old lady walks over but didn't say anything to anyone in that area as it was majority white women sitting. I then asked everyone out loud if they had made a purchase from Nancy jos and not one Persian purchased anything. So I told them what the nasty old white lady did to me and my black family. That was nasty mean and rude. We will never go there. I wouldn't truant the food if the workers...
