So my friend and I have been going to Grums, a sub shop on Coventry Road, for 37 years now. In fact, when I got my driver's license at 16, my first solo trip was to take Tony and my friend Stephen to a wonderful store called The Record Exchange on Coventry (about a 35 minute drive). Afterward, we got a footlong sub called a Turkey Ridge: a solid amount of thinly sliced turkey and provolone: lettuce, tomato, and raw onion; and freshly baked Italian bread slathered with mayo and oregano. They are not cheap, but the sub is cut in half and each half is a meal in itself. The Ridge is the best sub I've ever had, and any time we're in the area we buy one to take with us. We tried to get one last week when I took Tony and our friend Dave to the candlelight show at the Mantz, but Grums was closed. So Tony was up in the area visiting a friend yesterday and stopped by to pick up two subs ($30 total). Last night I ate half because, well, it was Grums. Definitely not diet food but so damned good. Just now I ate half of the second portion alongside some healthy homemade coleslaw and half a cantaloupe from my sister-in-law's garden. The whole meal...
Read moreThis is a tiny little shop that's been around for so long that is an institution in Coventry Village, on the same level as Tommy's. You can just feel how not-corporate they are, and I'm pretty sure that the owner works the counter, which I think is awesome. Their subs are all so good, and their bread is some of my favorite. A whole sub is a good investment if you want leftovers for the next day - it works out to around $6-7 a meal (for me at least). They have a drink fridge. There's no seating for dine-in, but they do have benches to wait - although I always prefer to drop into another store nearby and come back in a few minutes to pick it up.
Note that as of October 2024, the only credit/debit card they accept is Visa. It gives an option to tip on the card, so you don't need cash for that. I encourage tipping here, because the kitchen is open and you can really tell that they're...
Read moreJust tried to place an call-ahead order for tomorrow to feed my staff. Was interested in ordering one hundred subs (a potential $700 order to SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESS during this crazy time) and the gentleman who answered the phone was rude and probably lazy, as he didn't want to take an order. First he said he didn't deliver...I asked about if they're still doing carry-out and he hesitantly responded "yes". After offering to pick it up, dude said he couldn't accommodate. Mind you he was not a manager. Don't go here!!! *note to management of Grums, this is who is answering your phones. Don't be surprised if you go out of business because they turn away good, loyal and LOCAL customers. UPDATE: called Dave's Cosmic Subs and they are more than willing to fulfill group orders. Manager was very kinda and...
