First things first, you're going to be eating at a small town diner, so don't expect to be greated at the door or call ahead for reservations. Seemed like all the locals were there when we got there. The atmosphere wasn't bad, as long as you have the right mindset. The staff was great and very kind. The food was not the best I've ever had, but I know what to expect going into small town establishments. My husband got the Coney dogs with the onion rings (and of course were camping tonight, wish me luck) and I got the battered chicken sandwich with fries. The batter was done in house as was the sauce for the onion rings. It was good, id give it a 7 out of 10. The fries were plain ole' fries, nothing special. The chicken sandwich made me feel like I should have been timed to eat it and if I finished I would have had it comped from the bill it was so large. Everything could have used a dash of seasoning but the locals might prefer the light seasoning, as most of them were on the lighter side of the skin tone spectrum and we all can assume how they like there food seasoned... Honestly, it wasn't that bad. The prices were good. We're roadtrippers and have had worse food. Side note of you're gluten free, not the...
Read moreIt’s a travesty to roadside diners like Lou’s that the American traveler has become caught up in the “hurry” of fast food while traveling or opt to fly. Missing the opportunity experience the epitome of the American dining experience. The local mom & pop diner. Lou’s is exactly that. Located about a mile off interstate 40 at exit 41 in Indiana. You wouldn’t know it was here. Thank you Yelp! It’s clearly where the Coverdale, population 2100, locals eat.
We were greeted warmly as soon as we walked in the door. It’s cozy diner, nothing fancy. The booth seat has tears patched together with duct tape but they were comfy! I didn’t sink into them or have anything poking me where it shouldn’t. The waitress was pleasant and happy to help me decide what to eat. Everything on the menu is home style. Meatloaf, pork tenderloin, club sandwich. Nothing fancy.
My pork tenderloin came out on a 16” plate! I ate over half and my to go box was still a full dinner portion!! Insane. My husband ordered the meatloaf and it didn’t need any ketchup or gravy. That’s got to speak volumes. Of course they also have pie but I ate too much tenderloin.
Don’t be afraid to get off the interstate at the small towns. They have the...
Read moreStopped in today for a BPT. Excellent Breaded Pork Tenderloin! Plus really good onion rings! The BPT was not one of those pounded so thin you can’t find the meat, this had a nice thickness to the meat while still being super tender. The breading was seasoned really nice, like good fried chicken should be, and I have to believe those onion rings are hand battered (but I didn’t ask). But the breading and seasoning is the star here! BTW, the pic doesn’t show how big it really was because it was folded under some. It’s big but not the biggest ever. But the taste! Yum!!!
The service was good and everyone was friendly. It’s definitely not a fancy place and it’s small and kinda hidden, but it was clean and it sounded like they know most everyone who comes in the door by name (not us but most folks). This is one of those places that just makes darn good comfort food. Oh, and the prices are really reasonable! The pies looked great but we were too full to try any so that’s reserved for another visit. Now I want to go back and try some other dishes and make sure I have room for pie!! Don’t walk, run here!! Did I mention the BPT is really, really...
