Casa Don Jose — Restaurant in Colonial Heights

Stopped in here to give it a try. First off, service is GREAT. So fast. Once we ordered, we barely had time to munch some chips and salsa, and our meal was brought to us, HOT.

Chips are good, salsa is spicy, which I liked. I am not a "habanero/burn your lips off" kind of salsa fiend, but I like some flavor and kick to a salsa, and this had it. Just enough to taste, to notice it was hot/spicy, but not so much that I was sweating. Very good. I wish it were a bit more chunky (like a salsa) and not so smooth (like a sauce), but I would go back just for that, honestly.

Wife got a combo, which was good, I got Chicken Chimi's, which were passable. One chimichanga was a little soft/not fried much, the other was good enough/crispy. Rice was plentiful, and pretty tasty, actually. I wish the chimi's were more than just chicken in tortilla (go ahead, east coast Mexican places... add some veggies to the filler... couple beans, some onions or a pepper, or something in there so it's not a 1 pound bite of chicken).

We will consider this a "go back" place, because of the service and price. We both ate a good meal, had chips, and it was under $22. That's not bad in late 2023 for a sit down place.

My friends and I were model customers; we were quiet and didn’t ask for much. Upon the bills arriving, we noticed an extra charge on each bill. We asked for each bill to be itemized so we can see exactly what we are paying for. I go to the manager and he asked me , “Where are you from? You do not know about American Taxes?” I responded, I am from here. He responded “you not from Africa?” I never felt more disrespected in my life. I just wanted an itemized bill so I know where this 11.80 and an extra 5.00 “tax” like what. Mind you my friends and I are fluent in Spanish and English. The whole time we are explaining the issue we are trying to remain calm but we getting disrespected in Spanish. We informed the server we are fluent in Spanish and we would really appreciate if she didn’t talk about us in Spanish which she was doing since we walked in the building. All we wanted was an itemized bill and we got disrespect in return. I will never return to this establishment. The racist comment and the server recording a minor without consent is no where I want to spend my money at. The establishment really thought we was young we weren’t going to look at our check and analyze it. Do not recommend. We was having a great night....

The food was delicious, the portions generous, the waitstaff attentive and the only reason I can't give that last star is because we took another couple with us, it being her birthday yesterday. I called at lunch time to find out if they did anything to recognize that birthday (our first visit was contingent on that celebration) and the gentleman answering the phone said "Yes, we will sing. Just tell them when you come in." which is exactly what I wanted. Soooo, since my friend was walking directly behind me, I couldn't stop at the desk but as we were being taken to our table, told the young lady leading the way and she indicated she understood. Well, our food came.....and went......as did our checks and there was no song to be had. It wasn't because they were short staffed because they "delivered" to a group that came in after us. We sat at the table talking for a long time after our plates were cleared me thinking, "Well maybe something will register".....nope, zilch, nada, zero, nothing, no song was to be had. So anyway, although we enjoyed our dinner - it was just another routine night out at a Mexican restaurant, and I learned to sing that danged "Happy Birthday" song myself before our...
