As I awoke on my last day in Colorado Springs, with a flight time mere hours away, I was struck with a sense of vast urgency. I couldn't let all these opportunities to taste a myriad, a practical cornucopia, of onion rings, pass me by. My girlfriend was kind enough to drive me on a whistle-stop tour throughout Colorado Springs, as I eagerly looked up any fast food venue absent, or scarce, in my native home, desperate to taste the circular goodness that is the onion ring.
Listed on the menu as Panko breaded, my mind conjured up an image reminiscent of the quasi-covered onion rings from House of Yakitori, just down the road. when I opened the delightful carton, I was pleasantly surprised to see a relatively consistent coating of Panko bread. The presentation of the onion rings was surprisingly good for a fast food enterprise, with a sealed container to ensure freshness, heat, and no spillage within any bag or travel, and the onion rings were stacked appealingly within.
There were some problems with the inconsistency of the breading, as might be expected with Panko, but the coating of breadcrumbs did give a pleasantly bumpy appearance, with hills and valleys of breading resembling the Rocky Mountains surrounding me. They were golden brown and seemed imbued with sheer exuberance, and were nicely of a relatively uniform size.
A greasy, breaded, fried onion is perhaps the best encapsulation of an onion ring. Taste-wise, the onions are the star of this dish, with my first bite revealing a surprising amount of onion flavor. The breading is tasty, but it's not terribly well-seasoned. All I really get is more than a dash of grease, and less than a dash of salt.
Possibly as a consequence of the Panko breading, these onion rings are unusually dry, even with the grease, which detracts from their overall taste.
In a stunning reverse of the above, but in a way that shouldn't be surprising given the prominence of the Panko, the breading has the superior texture of these onion rings. The crumbs were fried just long enough to make the breading the ideal level of hardness. They were crunchy without being too hard, and had enough give to make a pleasant sound to the ears, and a pleasant sensation on the teeth, as the chomps reverberated through my cranium.
Unfortunately, the onion rings had far more slippage than was ideal, and on the majority of occasions, the onion slid out from the breading, leading me to functionally eat some sauteed onions with a pile of breadcrumbs. As it was since time immemorial, hubris was the downfall of these onion rings, as the shiny edifice of Panko collapsed under its own weight.
The onion texture, when present, was acceptable. They were surprisingly thin cuts of of onion, especially given the size of the onion rings, and left something to be desired. What was present, however, was good, not too mushy nor too raw.
For a mere $2.99, seven medium sized onion rings awaited me in a pleasant carton, prepared quickly and tastily. For the price, the quantity of the onion rings was terrific, and the quality, while not perfect, was a cut above the norm for fast food. I would have liked a few more, and a bit less slippage, but the value was...
Read moreAh, jack in the box you never change! This has been my second visit to jack in the box in 10 years and once again I was left wondering why I even came here. I went threw the drive through and ordered right away, I then waited about 25minutes before I made it to the window. After arriving at the window it took another 5min before I was even acknowledged and able to make payment. After receiving my food, I left the drive through and parked right away to make sure I could enjoy my food hot. However, when I opened my food, most items where warm at best and the fries were stale and cold. The bun on my burger was like it just came out of a bag, it wasn't warmed or anything. The bun was then topped with a tiny sliver of meat, more stale fries, and the siracha sauce, that the burger is named for, was nearly non-existent. After eating the burger, I moved on to the "tacos", if they can be called that. It was like eating a taco that was stepped on, then soaked in oil and deep fried. At first glance I wondered if it was the wrong item because of the degree of mutation from the menu photo it suffered. As previously mentioned, the fries were cold and stale. Most people know what cold fries are like to eat and the disappointment they bring, enough said. Going in, I had pretty low expectations, but I didnt think it would have been this bad. Overall, this has been by far the worst fast food I've tasted, and I don't think I'll be returning anytime in the future.
Edit: 2 years later, decided to give breakfast a try. I was pleasantly surprised and had a great experience and felt compelled to update my review. I had french toast sticks that were light, crispy, and not greasy. Also shared some mini pancakes that were also nice. The pancakes were sweet and didn't need any syrup so I just had butter with them. Very happy with this visit and make additional visits...
Read moreWas excited to try Jack in the Box for my first time--after having it strongly recommended to me. My boyfriend and I picked some up in the way home.
Specifically asked if the sandwich I was getting had onions--which I said I did not like-- and what condiments came on it. Got some curly fries on the cashier's recommendation.
They not only gave me the wrong sandwich--no condiments only Patty, pepper jack cheese, and onion rings. Curly fries were burnt and inedible. Had to ask for the iced coffee that had already been paid for. Didn't notice until I had gotten home--25 minutes away.
Was very pissed I couldn't eat the burnt fries and the burger because of the hated onions--that I had mentioned at the time of purchase--and pepper jack cheese which I also despise.
Called in three times and finally got someone on the phone. Wanted us to come back in to get the correct sandwich. This completely defeats the purpose of fast food. Was given the excuse that they were "very busy" at the time. The drive-thru had maybe 7 customers and one other couple was inside the restaurant after us. Not exactly a rush. We also waited patiently for about 15 minutes for our incorrect and inedible order.
Offered a large combo for free next time we got back. Our meal cost about $20. Not exactly fair compensation.
Will not be back and will not be eating at Jack in the Box again after this first--very bad--experience.
Tl;Dr: fries were burnt. Got the wrong food after specifically mentioning my hatred of onions. First time eating, will...
