My wife and I visited this restaurant for the first time tonight. We were meeting friends who frequent this restaurant often. The overall experience was extremely lackluster.
My wife, a woman of color, walked up to front and mentioned that she was meeting friends here. She received a blank stare from the person at the front. We were sat. Our waiter seemed pretty disinterested in our questions concerning the menu (as first time guests). I even mentioned that it was our first time and how excited we were to try out the menu. (blank stare from him).
I ordered the oscar style filet medium well. My wife ordered the 8oz filet. She requested it to be well done. (I know. I know.) But that is her preference. We eat at high end steakhouses all the time. Our expectation is well done--no pink in the center.
Guys, she received a pitch black steak that she literally had to use the muscles in her arm to cut. Being the compliant person that she is--and due to the fact that we were there with friends--she just muscled through and cut the extremely charred (literally like burnt ends) parts of the steak and pushed them to the side. Then, our friends who invited us were like, "Oh just let them know." So, she did. The waiter took it and said they would replace it. Then, out comes (the owner--I think?). His exact words, "Young lady [my wife is a 38 year old mother of 3 children], the steak was cooked just how you wanted it. It was well done. I can have another one made, but you will need to pay for both steaks." WHAT THE??!! Our friends who invited us were like, "Oh, no problem, we will pay for it." So, again, to accommodate, I said nothing. My wife gently responded, "So just to be clear, well done here means to be completely burned?" His response, "That's how we prepare it."
I was UNDONE!! I will neither return nor recommend this restaurant to anyone in the city. I'm not the person to pull the race card, but I sensed such an undertone of bias and disregard from our first impression when we entered.
And if you are wondering, the second steak (that we paid for) was burned on the top--i think they did that just to spite us.
And just so you know I'm objective, let me tell you about the food: the lobster bisque is definitely the best i have ever had in the Springs. And I know it seems trivial, but their french fries are amazing. It's the crispy on the outside kind. Yum. My asparagus with my oscar style filet was good. I ordered my steak medium well, and it was well done--so they clearly cook at a higher temperature or whatever.
So, won't be returning or recommending. This is the worst I have EVER been treated in a a restaurant. Our friends were the saving grace in this situation. In order to not make them feel uncomfortable, we said nothing, paid the $300+bill our selves and left a 20% tip on the total amount (minus the second steak that was delivered to my wife). pretty...
Read moreOh my goodness gracious! The food here is sooooooo good! The menu is basically the same as the marigold cafe off of garden of the gods...desserts are limited as this location is not the bakery. This is also not a cheap place to eat but every single penny is worth it! The service is immaculate. We were greeted at the door and jackets were taken and hung in a wardrobe near the entrance. Our waitress was amazing and super friendly! We all ordered salads to start. The beet salad is delumptious and the ceaser dressing on the ceaser sald is made in house. We all then got filet mignon and lobster that were cooked to perfection! By far the best steak you can get in the springs! And the lobster was incredible! For dessert, 2 of us got key lime pie and 1 of us got the berry tart. The key lime pie was the best I've ever had! Tart and sweet and absolutely perfect! The berry tart looked and tasted wonderful! We also got a free slice of citrus cheesecake with blueberry compote for the birthday. It was amazing! I also forgot to mention that at the beginning of our meal, one of the waiters brought over a caprese salad on the house! Didn't even know we were celebrating a birthday!
Overall, one of the best places to go for a nice night out! And for dress attire, you can go dressed-up or very casual jeans and tshirt. Love love...
Read moreWe had gone to a restaurant near Walters with some friends who were in town. See my review of Miguel's for that info. While we were there, our friend saw Walters and said that it was his go-to place when he took clients out in Colorado Springs. So when we had other friends visiting recently, we thought it might be good to try Walters. We were so glad we did. The first thing I'll say is that Walter's gets it when it comes to food temp. Everything that should have been hot was hot when it arrived at the table. I'm used to everything being lukewarm these days, and it's off putting. I had the Orchard Martini to start and it was delicious, crisp and refreshing. I hadn't had a steak in a while so I opted for the New York Strip. It was good and the sides that came with it were perfect. For the same price I could have had an 8oz Filet, which in retrospect I wish I would have. Nothing against the New York Strip though. They had some delicious looking desserts but we were too full to try them. Service was impeccable. Friendly but very professional. I will definitely return to Walter's Bistro and would recommend it to anyone looking for a...
