I guess my take on Mexican food is different than most seeing how I used to drive to Mexico a couple times a month to go eat at some local spots in tj., Rosarito, and Encinata living in southern California I was able to the trek. This place is kind of far from traditional Mexican food it is a fast food Mexican joint. I was told about this place by a number of people who raved that it was the best tacos in town (the best so far have been from the school bus on platte and circle or Chilton, behind the walmart btw for me), and decided to try it out finally. And I was not impressed. The service was lack luster, while in line waiting to order there was a couple of guys that had walked in after us and because they were speaking Spanish they got helped first. Got the food and it was alright...edible to say the least. Tacos had lettuce and cheese, I guess it's cool if you order tacos from del taco but they didnt have "street tacos" , I guess some would call em... tortilla, meat, cilantro, onion and salsa. In Mexico they called their type of tacos with the lettuce and cheese "white boy tacos", and it always makes me laugh. I also had a burrito (carne asada) and 3rolled tacos. Comparable to taco star... nothing to write home about by any means... give it a whirl yourself... dont let me discourage you from trying new places as I always tend not to go off reviews myself and take a chance on a new spot... but authentic this is not... fast food-ie it is... order at counter and then come back for your food after they tell out your whole order rather than just giving you a number, or bringing it out... a lot can change but it probably wont since so many people rave about this place... not for me and I'm still on the hunt for real Mexican food... HAPPY...
Read moreLove Monica's. The breakfast burritos are HUGE! And the food is authentic tasting. My wife and I were both born in and grew up in San Antonio, TX (Yes... We know... Texans are not welcome to stay in Colorado. But we live in Woodland Park now!) We have had the hardest time finding actual Mexican food or even Tex-Mex anywhere in Colorado. This is about as close as we've found in this area. The refried beans are made correctly, not "healthy." The tortillas are authentic, soft, and fluffy delicioso. And the chorizo is pretty good (not the quality of San Antonio, but good). And they make Mexican rice the right way! OMG, WHY can't Colorado Mexican food places make the simplest rice correctly??? Mexican rice starts by lightly FRYING/browning dry white long grain rice in a little oil with spices, then adding the liquids and veggies. It's not hard! And the rice is also not supposed to be hard or chewy! My wife actually likes Monica's enchiladas. Almost every enchilada in Colorado does not make the grade with her, but she likes the ones here as they're close enough to Tex-Mex. The main thing we usually get here at the drive-thru are breakfast burritos. They are very large. Actually too much for one person. But they meet the best you'll find at an authentic Texas taqueria! And you can ask them to custom make your breakfast burrito the way you want it. Not just what the menu board says. Anytime we are on this side of town in the early morning, we stop here for breakfast burritos, since anywhere else just doesn't cut it. (Yes, Rudy's breakfast tacos are good... They're from San Antonio, after all... Just not quite as good...
Read moreAbsolutely stunned and without any doubt the worst restaurant establishment in Colorado Springs. Let me explain. Today is my daughters 25th birthday. Every year I take any one of my seven children out for dinner of their choice on their birthday. Out of total surprise this daughter chose Monica's Taco Shop. My other daughter, my wife and myself knew better so we chose Chipotle instead and for three entrees and one large beverage the total came to $31.16. Now we head to Monica's Taco Shop to get the birthday girl her desired food, Monica's Super Nacho. Along with two large drinks and get this, a small bean & cheese burrito with a side of rice and beans for our two year old daughter. Cost was $26.87! Say what? Yes, $26.87. If it wasn't my daughters 25th birthday dinner I would have handed back the drinks and told them to cancel my order and cancel my credit card payment. The lady at the window laughed like she knew what a rip-off it was but tried nothing to assist in the matter. Monica, why don't you have kids menu like any other restaurant and why are you charging for salsa now? Your a Mexican restaurant and salsa is free at every other restaurant because it's a staple product in your cuisine. Get it together!
This is totally unacceptable. Those with kids will shy away from this establishment for no parent should be charged $11 for a kids item and we as a family will never give your establishment...
