Considering the location and the looks of the building and surrounding businesses, I must admit I was a bit worried when I made the reservations. You must make reservations or you might not get a chance to try this Colorado Springs hidden gem. We pulled up and earlier in the day, what was once a deserted parking lot at an old run-down mini-mall, had suddenly come to life. Cars filled the lot and when we walked through the doors, it was like entering another world vastly different from outside. There was a soft glow in a small but quaint German-style restaurant. The German-accented waitress greeted us at the door as soon as we walked in. She welcomed us as she showed us to our table. There are no booths here. After ordering our drinks, she returned promptly to take our orders. The restaurant was not very big but every table was filled. But after having our dinners, it does not surprise me. The food was fresh, hot, and so so good. In fact, we started to devour our food no sooner than she set it down. I didn't think to get pictures. Sorry folks. The schnitzel was awesome, and the veal Cordon Bleu was excellent! And of course, the bratwurst was the bomb as well. The dinners all came with fried potatoes and soup or salad. The desserts were also top-notch; apple pie Ala mode and cheesecake drizzled in chocolate syrup. My belly was super full! I had to consciously save a bit for my pup who was sitting at home waiting. If I hadn't, I'd have eaten every bite. I highly recommend this place! It sits behind the old Montgomery Wards, now the Social Security building off Pikes Peak ave. on Iowa st. Hours are split. They are open from 11-1:30 for lunch and then reopen from 5:30-8:00 for dinner. They do serve german wines and beer, along with German style coffee. Or you can just order a good...
Read moreIt was a sensitive subject and I had avoided it as long as I could, it was time to have the talk. For years my protege Usir "The Stimulus Package" El had been my loyal 2nd in command at the group residence of the Community of Universal Living Tactics. But times change and I needed access to a blacksmith 24 hours a day. I had talked with my knife maker Ray "the devil's ecstasy dealer" Mavromatis and he agreed to come on board but only if he was given Usir's title of the Wielder of Unspeakable Wisdom. I was torn because Usir was the first person to ever complete all 7 years of my intensive truth revealing and colon detoxing program but Ray had competed on history channels forged in fire. To pull off what I was planning I was going to need a s@!t load of hand forged horseshoes so I decided I had to demote Usir to the lesser post of He Who Carries the Sacrate Orb. I knew this was going to be rough so I decided to soften the blow with some world class German food, so we came to Uwe's restruant. As crushed as Usir was not even he could keep weeping after tasting the revelation of Uwe's spaetzle and grazy. The food was so wonderful that after Ray tragically died in a house fire two weeks later we came back to celebrate Usir's reelevation to the Table of High Truth. Thank you Uwe's restraurant for providing the food to help use...
Read moreI live nearby Schnitzel Fritz off Powers so sometimes I head there just because it's close but nothing compares to Uwes. I lived in Stuttgart, Germany for several years so can appreciate good German food and Uwes is awesome.
I've gone to multiple German restaurants in the Springs and my family's favorite place has always been Uwes, we have been going to Uwes for decades. Edelweiss has a nice restaurant/atmosphere but their food isn't anything special. My grandmother is a 93 year old German and the only place she will go to is Uwes. The mushroom gravy at Uwes is like liquid cocaine, please put it in a IV bag and insert the needle into my arm lol. The Goulash soup is a favorite as well.
I just wish Uwes and Schnitzel Fritz could swap locations so then I would have Uwes near my house, but that would probably be detrimental to my health haha. If you want the best German food in the Springs and don't mind the drive downtown go to Uwes. Just make sure you always call Uwes to make a reservation first and to see if they are open. A few times a year they leave to go on vacation for a few weeks to a month so always good to make sure they are actually open before you...
