We were just looking for a quick simple breakfast as we got a late start on the day and Bowles Cafe was close by. I’m glad it was.
They welcomed us in and when we asked for a booth we were told that none were available, but then the second host (actually I believe the servers covered the host role as well, which does add to their work, but also means that they have a better understanding of what is going on) said “actually we are T minus 30 seconds to a booth.” This light and service oriented interaction set a great tone.
Since it was our first time we needed a minute with the menu and when my wife asked for our server Jesse’s recommendation he pointed out a few of the most popular items. He noted that the most popular was the Bowles Combo. Which makes sense, because it is about as free form as I have seen. We both went with it.
The base is two eggs prepared any way and hash browns. I do have to note that even asking for extra crispy nearly burnt, they were closer to hash whites than browns. Fortunately everything else was much better. You then choose between pancakes, French Toast and Biscuits and Gravy and bacon, ham, link sausage or patty sausage. So we got pancakes and French Toast. Both were really good. I could almost eat the French Toast without syrup. It is a bit different because it is dusted with what I believe is crushed corn flakes. This seemed particularly nice in the first few bites, but I decided not really worth it in the end.
I also did a half order of biscuits and gravy on the side, more from curiosity than hunger. The biscuit was very nice, light and collapsing in my mouth while standing up to the gravy on the plate. The gravy was not as impressive, but honestly I am not a huge gravy fan unless its flavor is really strong with sausage.
Jesse was quick on refills and picking up on our desire to interact with him. He was just efficiency and politely taking care of us until we asked about him and then he was willing to take the time to talk with us.
All and all, I will definitely return if we are in the area again.
Actually we went back the next morning. Much busier, had a 10 minute wait, but excellent...
Read moreAfter a short hike near lookout mountain, our group showed up in this small strip mall/shopping center to eat a fantastic brunch that my brother and his wife suggested.... at the Flying Pig. Unfortunately for us, they had just switched up their menu/dining program to eliminate brunch altogether. Luckily for us though, the Bowles Cafe was just on the other side of the parking lot ( I was super hungry), so we took a short stroll over. This was a Sunday Morning, so of course the place was PACKED. We probably waited in the area of about... 20 minutes or so, then got a table. A sign on the door read that the restaurant was having some staffing issues, and you could tell they were running all over the place. Despite this, they all seemed fairly chipper and sociable, and were handling the rush pretty well. As far as the food goes... nothing to write home about, but not bad. I had a breakfast burrito smothered in green Chile. It was just a bit smaller than what I'm used to (Sam's No.3 has spoiled me there), and I hate to say it... but it was kinda bland. Needed some salt and some spice for sure. The others in my party agreed that there food was on the bland side as well, except for my brother's young son, who loved his pancakes because.. well... maple syrup. All in all a pleasant experience, but I'd say they play it safe when picking the menu and cater to a slightly older crowd. Prices weren't bad, and if lived in the immediate area this would probably be a good choice, especially for older relatives who like more classic cafe fair. Just a little ho hum...
Read moreBowles Cafe is easy to get to from 470. It's just pass Walmart if you're coming from Denver. It was busy when we dropped by but surprisingly the wait was only 15 minutes.
There's not much breakfast place within the vicinity of Bowles Cafe.
I tried their Sausage Skillet. It's basically sausages, green bell pepper, onions and potatoes. Smothered with Country Gravy instead of Green Chile. Topped with my choice of two over easy eggs.
In theory you can't mess this one up. I cook at home. A lot. I was imagining what I would be making if I was cooking this since the ingredients are pretty much inviting. I was expecting a burst of greens from the green bell pepper and yellows from the eggs etc. boy was I disappointed. Lack of color, flavor and the amount of individual ingredients! About four tiny pieces of green bell pepper? The ratio of sausage to potatoes was overwhelmingly leaning on the potatoes side.
Listen, if the potatoes were seasoned well or browned on top I'd devour it! Boiled potatoes that's bland and mixed in with a few pieces of sausage wont do it!
Season your dishes and make it look like it's worth paying for. Oh yeah, why the obvious imbalance or lack of the main ingredients? At $9+ I think the paying public deserves more sausage and green bell pepper.
I'm a bit annoyed because if you decide to open a business pls make it worth both our time! Yours and mine!
This place has some really great staff. Fast, on top of it and professional. The food? Meh! In case you're wondering, company's breakfast was lackluster as well . In every...
