By-Pass Deli — Restaurant in Columbia

The food was decent and the prices are beyond reasonable but some things can't be overlooked. My wife and I stopped by for some lunch. She had a serving of chicken salad and I had a turkey hoagie. We both thought the food was a good value but as we watched it being prepared we almost walked out. First we watched everything being done with gloves on. Normally that would sound great except when I say everything, I mean everything. I watched someone answer the phone, handle cash, and then finally my hoagie roll with the same gloved hand. The person working the grill did the same thing. He walked around with his gloves touching everything, including his bluetooth earpiece and then went back to the line to make burgers. Next came the chicken salad. My wife's chicken salad was the last of what was in the bin, on the line. So the person went back, got a larger bin, and started transferring chicken salad to the smaller bin. They didn't get a new container or even clean out the old one. They were just putting new chicken salad on top of old chicken salad. Then some chicken salad fell on the line and they picked it up with "the glove" and put it back into the bin. The same glove that answered the phone and touched money. At one point I told my wife to stop telling me what was happening or I wouldn't be able to eat my food. I don't write reviews very often and I am the first to praise when something is really good and right. There is nothing I enjoy more than a good hamburger. This place has the absolute worst hamburgers my wife and I have ever had. It was obvious that it was not fresh cooked. I ordered a large burger and I could hardly find it in the bun because it was so shrunk up. When I did, it was so over cooked and dry it was like eating shoe leather. I should have complained but I am not one who usually complains about their food. My wife says ditto from her about her burger as well. Terrible. Terrible. Terrible. This used to be a great place to eat, but apparently not anymore! The last time I ate there I noticed their awards for "Best burger in Columbia" stopped a couple of years ago, and then I saw why. I ordered the "jumbo" burger, and received what looked to be a McDonald's reject. I went back today to give it another try. The mushrooms we ordered were beyond disgusting. They had been re-fried AT LEAST TWICE! The breading was fused together, and half of the mushrooms had just fallen out. Three orders of mushrooms, and all were like this or worse. Oh and the extra Ranch that we ordered and paid for, we didn't get - not that it would have made a difference. I would honestly be embarrassed and ashamed to serve...
