The Flour Child — Restaurant in Columbia

Went for a cake tasting for our upcoming wedding. Had been to other "tastings" and consults which were super awkward and even had one place tell me they refused to do business with us because our wedding is on the smaller side. (About 75 invited)

But we came into this little shop, Alixe kindly reaaragned our appointment at short notice due to my work schedule changing. We ended up only being able to come in an hour before they closed. It was a little hard to determine which building was theirs, but after finally seeing cakes in the display windows we knew where to go.

We were offered complimentary water, coffee, tea, and sat down with one of the bakers and she explained how they do their cakes, and gave us some photos to look at while she put together our cakes to test.

She came back with 4 HUGE cupcakes, 4 dollops of icing, and 2 fillers. We had chosen the flavors online when we scheduled our consult. We LOVE sweets haha so the look on my fiancee's face was priceless when he saw all the cake we got to try! Most other places give you a bite of cake of 2 or 3 flavors. Which is fine. But these guys really go above and beyond. And it was so cute too, all arranged nicely on cute plates etc. It just felt special.

We decided on style and flavors and consulted with her again while she wrote down what we said we wanted. We really wanted a classic 3-tier cake but with the small amt of guests, they suggested we do the bottom 2 rounds fake cake, that they decorate with our little cake on top real for us, and then they would make enough cakes for our guests to be cut and served in the back that wouldn't have to be part of the show. Such a relief to be doing business with someone who understands what customers want and is flexible enough to make that happen! We received our invoice quickly and decided (as if it was a question) to book with tfc.

We couldn't resist leaving the cute little shop without some sweets to take home (the cakes really are that good) I even came back the following week to pick up some more cupcakes!

Undoubtedly, for our wedding, the cake tasting and the cake itself was of top level importance for my husband. His motto for the wedding reception was jokingly steak and cake (we had to have an amazing steak to eat and a scrumptious cake to enjoy, those were his top requirements for the reception). He went in to wedding cake tasting like it was the olympics....but there wasn’t much competition. The Flour Child was the hands down winner, and they left all the other competition in the dust. All three components of their cake were perfect, the cake, filling, and frosting. The perfect trifecta we were looking for. For our wedding cake we chose a marble cake, with real raspberry filling, and vanilla buttercream frosting. They took my drawings and created the edible version of them, exactly as I envisioned it. Taking all of our suggestions, but also using their expertise to guide us in the right direction we knew we were in good hands. The cake was scrumptious, looked gorgeous, and had all our guests wanting seconds. Working with the girls at The Flour Child to make our dream wedding cake design a reality, was effortless, fun, and enjoyable. Our cake expectations were exceeded and we can’t wait to try more of what The Flour Child...

We have used the flour child for a few years now for every birthday in our household. I placed an order for my daughter’s cake to be picked up today and when I called to see what time pick up was I was told there would be no cake. Apparently I never gave them cake flavors despite discussing decorations and all other details. When I asked why they didn’t reach out when they saw they had no flavor details for me, I was told it’s their policy is not to reach out due to how busy they are, that it’s posted on social media and that since I have been a customer for so long they would think I would know that.

They did offer to try and make a cake for later in the weekend. Honestly, if they would have called me this morning and explained they wouldn’t have the cake but offered later this weekend I would have understood and been ok with that. But simply doing nothing and keeping the deposit is bad customer service. Their cakes are great but due to the poor way they handled this and lack of professionalism we will not be using them again....
