Hounddogs is a great bar and pizza joint in the University district near OSU. They have parking behind the building, but the nearest street is only one way the other direction, so you have to go around the block to park in the parking lot.

They have 2 different styles of pizza - Hounddogs and Smokin' Joe's. Hounddogs style pizza is basically Ohio/Midwest style (thin crust, square cut) with an option to choose the spiciness of your pizza sauce. Smokin' Joe's style is a thicker more traditional style with a garlic butter crust and a sweeter pizza sauce.

The wife and I ordered a large (16") cheese lover pizza with pepperoni and pineapple hounddogs style with spicy sauce, "The Russell" large smokin Joe's style, an order of Kraut Balls, and 6 bone in buffalo wings. Price came to $61 - which is a bit expensive, but I get it since they're in a prime location near OSU.

After trying both pizzas, I actually preferred the Smokin' Joe's style to Hounddogs, even though I personally love Ohio/Midwest style pizza with spice. Don't get me wrong the Hounddogs style was excellent as well, but the pizza was pretty greasy. The Smokin' Joe's style crust was indeed a delicious garlic butter crust , as well as doughy but with the right amount of crispy.

There was an issue with The Russell I ordered though - the description on their menu says "your choice of sauce, mozzarella & provolone cheese, seasoned chicken and bacon, TOPPED with scallions and ranch. Everything was on there except the ranch, which is a shame because their ranch is homemade and glorious (got some with the Kraut Balls).

Overall both pizzas had fantastic flavor, toppings, sauce, and cheese. The Kraut Balls were more like sausage balls, but that's not a bad thing either - you only get 5 for 7.99 though, should probably be 6 or 8 for that price. Wings were decent, plenty of sauce and good flavor.

Personally I give the pizza a 4.8, the ranch a 5.0 (look out Tommy's Pizza, you have a challenger for best ranch in the city), and the sides a 4.5. Since Google doesn't allow decimal reviews, I just rounded up to a 5.

Other than maybe a very slightly messed up order and the high price, this is an all around really good...

This place used too be good but unfortunately it went down hill it's been years sense I was there last night for my birthday I decided too go with my family well let's say it wasn't the best the service we got was not the best we ordered a few pizzas with some cheese sticks and a little sub when I say little it was tiny and tasted like old bread and nasty meat the cheese sticks where pretty good but not the best the pop was root beer tasted flat and very old then myself I always drink water with dinner I'm at a pizza place I'm sure water wasn't a issue well it was the waiter held his Pinky finger up and laughed and said water for the high class guy I ignored it then after asking for knife too cut my sub too share with my kids he came back and said here you go Mr ex caliber what was that about the smh ? Again just ignored it finally after 40 minutes of wait for two pizzas they came out looked good but unfortunately the taste was not there the bbq chicken pizza just had too much bbq sauce making the topping fall off crust was blaaaa and soked in sauce the supreme dog pizza was ok the cheese felt cheep and tasted very very cheap wasn't even melted all the way through the pizza dough it was still not done all the way it was just a bad experience too be honest spending over 115 for 2 pizzas cheese sticks and a tiny sub@ pop was kinda over the top my kids even said it was pretty bad when teenagers say pizza is bad( that's not good) i wish this place was better like it was years ago but unfortunately seems it feels like its lost its character on the saying they have pizza for the people it should be pizza for the homeless cause after this experience hard working people shouldn't waste there money in this place we will not be returning we wish you the best...

So we hit up Hound Dogs/Rivari Room after a CBJ game on 1/2. Came in the back entrance and saw the dining room was closed for evening, so we went over to the bar side. Got a couple of drinks from the bartender. Good crowd. Several tables of people some of who were eating pizza. Guys playing pool at the tables. Went over to the pizza side to order pizza, and was told that you can't take pizza to the bar side. Weird because people were eating pizza on the bar side. Our friends join us and order their pizza about the same time. Bartender comes over and says last call in 10 minutes. A little odd considering there were at least 30 people in the place drinking. I go up to the bar to order my last round. Bartender is talking to regulars on other side of the bar. I wait three minutes and the bartender is still talking. I go back to the table, grab a drink of beer and the pizzas have arrived. Head back over the bar to get last call. I approach the bartender and he slaps down my tab. I ask about last call. He rudely tells me that he told me ten minutes ago with a healthy dose of attitude. I could have been 10 minutes, but was realistically around 8 minutes. I didn't have the energy to debate how long it had been, how I had already come up to the bar but he was too busy chumming it up with his buddies/regulars to serve me. I didn't mention that he had a bar full of guests many of whom had full drinks. He wanted us gone. Went back to the table and the pizza was perfect in every way. Pizza cook got nice tip, and rude bartender did not. I'll back, but will have to get there earlier to get the...

06/29/2024 We love Houndogs! I prefer the Houndogs thin crust! It always taste consistently excellent! I wish they had more parking but then they would need a bigger building! 04/01/2023 This is absolutely the best pizza in all of Columbus, in my opinion! If you like your crust crispy! Our server Sarah was so friendly and an absolute pleasure! We come from Grove City for this pizza and circle the parking lot until a spot becomes available! It's worth it! It's to coolest place inside too, with the coolest music! OMG! What a great place! First time here and what a great place! The atmosphere was so fun! Our server Mike was a lot of fun and willing to converse and make recommendations! We got an original Houndog's with pepperoni, also a Smokin Joe's supreme, a Italian Sub, Mozzarella cheese Sticks, buffalo bites a jalapeno poppers. It was all amazing but I suggest the original and we all felt the same way! Thin crackery crust great flavor delicious cheese. This pizza reminded me of a pizza from my childhood, Cassano's Pizza! My wife agreed! Excellent!

I tried them after seeing so many amazing reviews on the local FB pizza group. I must say it didn't impress me, but it did impress my husband. That is saying something bc he is not a big pizza fan, but he loved this pizza. We obviously have different tastes when it comes to the local pie shops in c-bus. My fav is grandma's on the westside and little Sicily's on the east. I gave it four stars bc even though I didn't necessarily enjoy it, my hubby did so they are doing something right. The atmosphere of the joint is pretty darn cool as well. I'm gonna give em another try and order a different crust to see if I'd rather prefer it. I had the famous smokin Joe's. So do yourself a favor and definitely try Hound Dogs, you'll never know if it's as good as everyone says unless you give em a shot. P.S. my picky hubby also said the Italian sub was on point.
